The Relatable i5-4690K

  • Testing the Intel i5-4690K quad core CPU in 10 popular and demanding games in 2023, using an RTX 3070 discrete GPU.
Overclockable quad core i5s were the go-to gaming CPU for the better part of a decade. Although many enthusiasts - particularly the more frugal ones - would swear by the i5-2500K and decry later models as being iterative refreshes rather than genuine upgrades, that might not be true. The Haswell i5-4690K was the first such chip to feature AVX 2, which, along with improved IPC, might at last be a deciding factor in the 1150 chip’s favour.
However, in the 9 years since its release, core and thread count has taken on a more meaningful role in games. Is the classic quad core too much of a bottleneck for 2023?

4th Generation Intel CPUs are Legendary! Still running a 4790k @ 4.8 after delidding paired with a 5700xt. It's a very well balanced system, usually get 50-70%CPU/99%GPU usage (CPU usage varies depending on the game, it never bottlenecks the GPU usage). Instead of upgrading, this time I'm doing a full new build and keeping this system as my backup, it's the first rig that I'm sentimental about, it's so pretty

For me the 2600K is legendary, now that's a CPU that's stood the test of time lol. Unfortunately it's limited by a worse memory controller and supports an older PCIe generation compared to 4770K/4790K, but even the ol Sandy Bridge K-SKUs could hit 5Ghz -- although the 2600K I had up till only 3 years ago was running at 4.5 on a $20 air cooler lol.

      @couriersix2443 Год назад +7

@@saricubra2867 well yeah I'm not saying sandy bridge is "better", but most of us that had a 2600K/2700K back then weren't concerned with upgrading to haswell since sandy bridge was still more than enough at the time. I'm sure it's the same story for people who stuck with a 4770K/4790K instead of upgrading to a 7700K despite the better IPC of Skylake/Kaby Lake & 14nm node as well as DDR4 support

I retired mine two years ago, but it was running 4.7 @ 1.28v if memory serves. Dark Rock Pro 4 was overkill enough to do that without a delid. Even 4.8 was doable, but I was paranoid about going over 1.3v long term.
The chip is still fine, it's in my brothers PC with much more conservative settings. Once he's done with it, it'll slot nicely in my also Z97 based home server, hopefully for years to come.

Fast memory does benefit quite a bit as well.

I at first had it paired with a GTX 950 then a 1650 Super and a RAM upgrade from 8 to 16GB and finally in its last year of service I installed a 120MM AIO and had a 4.4 GHz OC. I upgraded to an i7 10700KF and it made a world of difference but the 4690k will be remembered I played lots of Fortnite (the entire reason for the OC as I was NOT going to use performance mode and Ch2S4 was alot harder to run than previous chapters) and Battlefield 4.

4:18 - You will see a similar detail level issue with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. AND the worst part is MANY tech tubers never noticed this because they let benches run largely unattended. (* Kudos to RA Tech for catching it in his FX 8350 vs i5 3470 comparison video.) The kind of bug was actually a BIG PROBLEM. A LOT of reviewers, who left these automated tests unattended, reported FALSE results, showing higher frames on the 4 core i5 CPUs than they were actually producing. This lead to a lot of misinformation about the comparitive performance between locked intel i3 and i5 CPUs and the FX lineup. Nice to see a second source confirm the issue exists in other games!

The one thing I can say about the benchmarks is that on the budget hardware, I feel that most people will target 1080p 60fps.
Rather than 1440p... but I get that you use a 1440p monitor, and 1080p does not look as good on it.

I've noticed something strange in the last years.
And I was involved into PC hardware heavily all these years.
Since Ryzen came in 2017, Intel and games' devs were pushing so hard for multicore enhancements, I'm pretty sure they disregarded focus on 1 or 2 cores, or maybe some kind of optimizations for IPC/single core/thread performance.
Everyone and their dog was amazed about having 6 or 8 or 16 whatever cores. To share workloads between multiple cores.
Now, maybe since last year or two, I got few DDR3 rigs thru my hands, and as long as thermal paste is changed, motherboard cleaned up with proper stuff, fans cleaned up, PSU cleaned up, applied little OC, new SSD installed - 4 cores is playing dam well!
On top of that, select FSR 2.1 where applicable and dang! 1080p gaming for 150-200 euros!
It's like industry has realized there's millions of potential gamers in low/mid income economies, where i5 or Ryzen 3 is the best kids can have, hence feels like the industry re-started optimizations for single/double cores performance. 🤷‍♂️

Ive been using this cpu with 8gb of DDR3 and a 970 since 2014ish, just decided to retire her today and upgrade to something more contemporary, and if it lasts me another 10 years I’ll be surprised. Almost a decade of service and was able to mostly keep up with everything I threw at it, which admittedly was never more demanding than mid-settings witcher 3 at 1080p. Never once had an issue, a great little cpu

I've actually considered trying to make it into a WinXP build. xD

Glad I decided to try out the game because I just canceled that order. My 8 year old i5 4690k never overclocked plays the game just fine paired with a gtx 1660s and 16 gb ram. Cyberpunk had to keep on medium and would get frame drops when going into new parts of the map. Farcry 6 played ok averaging 50 to 60 on high.

I got for free a dell 7010 with i5-2400 in it (I want to upgrade but I'm not sure what is the best supported cpu for this pc), added some ram I had laying around so now it has 12gb ddr3 memory, added ssd drives ofc, and the only thing I bought for it specifically was the 1050ti and I was so surprised with how this puny machine can maintain 60fps on every game I throw at it, I play at 1680x1050 because I could not get used to 16:9 aspect ratio, ofc the newest games I don't have maxed out but I drop only AA some barely visible effects, i love it even though the case won't close because the GPU sticks out a lot, but hey, i now added a big fan to extract the heat from ram/cpu area.
I plan on buying the best cpu for it, I know it probably won't support anything over 4th gen but i think that i7-xxxxK would be nice to handle more cpu heavy games, I run RDR2 on this current configuration and it runs on 60fps at medium/high settings.
I will buy a new GPU this year and i wonder what the best cpu for that pc is because it still will be cheap compared to my new GPU - I will buy the whole new mobo, ram, ryzen cpu next year because i don't feel the system is old yet, tbh I like the case and I will propably throw everything new in that dell 7010 case because it looks so cute and it being open allows me to cool every part better, if you have any idea what cpu the dell 7010 that came with an i5-2400 can take, because even though it is lga1155 it could just not accept too new of a cpu, I know that the 3rd gen i7 will work but beyond that? Is there anybody who knows this dell stuff and can give me an answer? I would be very happy
