Having a PC with a DVD drive (and a bay in the cabinet) is always worth it for me. I have got dozens and dozens of games' DVDs that I can't use in my "modern" PC, because decent new cabinets don't support DVD drives.

Pair that 8700 with a Rtx 3060 a new tower cooler and you are set for the next few years (Maybe grab a solid 650W Psu).

What is 2K? In the convoluted mix of either saying 4K or 2160p, 2K is technically one half of the 4K aspect ratio, 3840x2160. 1080p is 2K. 1440p is 2.5K etc..

I run it with vcore set to 1.2mV in BIOS and cool it with an Pure Rock 2 in push pull wih good Caseairflow. Never sees 70 under full load and mostly 60 in Games. I run overlays quite often, in every game at least and it looks like there is no CPU Bottleneck at all with my Budget (Not when i got it ... :D) RX6600. I would rather upgrade the GPU than the CPU at the Moment. But i won't i guess. Works well and i will stay on the Monitor until i get a bigger Card. No Need yet.

It's still got more than decent grunt for most games these days, maybe not for 1440p Ultra but for 1080p High it's more than adequate. I can see an 8700k having two years of usage for "enthusiast" gamers that don't need to crank everything but still enjoy some quality visuals.

    Last year I upgraded indeed to the i9-9900ks (at a steel.off fleabay) and a 1000w psu...and 32gig 3600ram...
Runs everything I could wish for at 1440p (27" asus)
Downside is now I'm stuck needing new mobo, cpu and gpu upgrade to at least a 3070 to gain higher 20 fps only and that's a lot of money for very little gain..

If you want to upgrade that CPU to an i9, maybe you could try getting one of these Chinese CPUs, which are laptop CPU soldered to a 1151 socket (BGA?). You must have a compatible motherboard, and the seller will send you the new BIOS. I got a QTJ1, which is basically an i9 from 9/10th gen, with 8 cores and 16 threads, clocked at 4.7, but with unlocked multiplier (got up to 5.1 but wasn't stable, so lowered it to 4.9). Also, note that you probably will have to run the RAM at 2800 or lower. Some people got golden chips with 5.2 and 3200MHz RAM.

I remember that SSD and HDD combo being extremely sensible at the time though it did cause streaming issues with textures as I had a 5400RPM hard drive though it is fun now to have all those games on an SSD and see them shine with much reduced loading times and texture issues practically eliminated.
