Takes a pure genius to write a song like this. She writes straight from the heart. I lost a beutiful 19 year old daughter along the way and this song still speaks to that loss better than any other.
Lyrics: See what you lost when you left this world This sweet old world See what you lost when you left this world This sweet old world The breath from your own lips The touch of fingertips A sweet and tender kiss The sound of a midnight train Wearing someone's ring Someone calling your name Somebody so warm Cradled in your arms Didn't you think You were worth anything See what you lost when you left this world This sweet old world See what you lost when you left this world This sweet old world Millions of us in love Promises made good Your own flesh and blood Looking for some truth Dancing with no shoes The beat The rhythm The blues The pounding of your heart's drum Together with another one Didn't you think anyone loved you See what you lost when you left this world This sweet old world See what you lost when you left this world This sweet old world See what you lost when you left this world This sweet old world See what you lost when you left this world This sweet old world
I first got to know this song when Emmylou covered it on her album "Wrecking Ball", a great version, but I didn't know of Lucinda Williams at that time. Years later I found a compilation album that had tracks by various artists which included Lucinda's song "Greenville" and I fell deeply in love with it so I followed up on that and discovered the captivating beauty of Lucinda Williams' music. She is an absolute treasure whose songwriting and voice touch my very soul. With all the challenges the modern world throws up at us it's wonderful that someone can move you as much as Lucinda does me.
Lucinda Williams and Iris DeMent are two lesser known treasures. I discovered both in the mid '90's which is about when Lucinda first recorded this. ruclips.net/video/b9IUj1mDENg/видео.html
1992. yeah, i didn't pick up on her until a decade later. she's the real deal. another song on that album, Pineola, also is about suicide, of a family friend. Brutal. but, she didn't hit the "big time" until 1998, when she won a Grammy for her album, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. So, unless you were hanging out in the back 40 of the folk/country music scene, you probably wouldn't have heard of her.
Desert Island album - Sweet Old World - every song. Her following album, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road ( which the critics raved about, after missing Sweet Old World ) doesn't hold a candle to Sweet Old World album, unfortunately. Happy listening : ))

Would have been interesting to hear him harmonize with Emilou, I think he could've added to the sound ... He's professional enough to know how to sing soft harmony along with the ladies.
Bridge School Benefit 1999. The Bridge School Benefit was an annual charity concert usually held in Mountain View, California, every October at the Shoreline Amphitheatre from 1986 until 2016 with the exception of 1987. The concerts lasted the entire weekend and were organized by Neil Young and Pegi Young.

Hope you're doing better.
I hope you find peace. I am so sorry.
Wow. Two of the greatest songwriters ever in Neil and Lucinda, and let's toss in the sweetest voice ever with Emmylou, and just....wow.
One of the most heart aching songs ever - especially for those of us who lost someone dear through suicide
Magnificent! Heartbreaking for some 😢😢OMG even to think about it. Lord rest their souls and comfort those left behind to wonder why forever😢
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Watching on this veterans day 🇺🇸❤
Lyrics:
See what you lost when you left this world
This sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world
This sweet old world
The breath from your own lips
The touch of fingertips
A sweet and tender kiss
The sound of a midnight train
Wearing someone's ring
Someone calling your name
Somebody so warm
Cradled in your arms
Didn't you think
You were worth anything
See what you lost when you left this world
This sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world
This sweet old world
Millions of us in love
Promises made good
Your own flesh and blood
Looking for some truth
Dancing with no shoes
The beat
The rhythm
The blues
The pounding of your heart's drum
Together with another one
Didn't you think anyone loved you
See what you lost when you left this world
This sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world
This sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world
This sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world
This sweet old world
Lucinda's voice is just so tender, made more beautiful with Emmylou's exquisite harmonies.
Life has its tender mercies. This song with these folks is one of them.
Without a doubt the best video on RUclips
And the angels were singing !
With these 3 top notch artists... what more could be said but awesome !!! 👌💯 .
Oldtimer here, don't know when this song came out but I totally missed it. Glad I discovered Lucinda's masterpiece here !

I love that Neil sticks to being an instrumentalist here, and doesn't get in the way of these two angels' harmonies.
i was thinking the same thing
Neil is first and foremost a music fan.
@@gudlisner501 Yer darn tootin he is!
NY never gets in the way, genius.
@@lewisc215 Take off eh.

Neil always Rocks , even on

i was there
I was only familiar with Emmylou's version from Wrecking Ball. I can not thank you enough for sharing. I can not thank you enough.

Fabulous Excellent 💯💕♥️🎤🎻🎸
Love Lucinda’s music ever seen I discovered her through utube AND COVID, not that long ago but quite stuck to her songs!

OMG - BEAUTIFUL!!! To see Neil Young❤, Lucinda Williams❤, Emmylou Harris❤ perform together - WHAT A GIFT!!!
Thank you so much for posting this!🙏🙏
Beautiful
How gorgeous is this....just heartrending. Thx for posting.
Emmylou isn't just the finest singer alive today . . . she's also the best backup singer too!! : ))
Her vocals are featured on over 100 songs of other musicians. She and Linda Ronstadt are arguably the most generous with sharing their talents.
@@tjwash2 Thanks TJ I did not have all that information.
duh
She lets the song be the star always adds something special without getting in anyone's light
Haunting with Neils harmonica....Thanks GHOSTS.... Jackieblue(L.A.)✌

The best song about a suicide of a friend I ever listened to

Have you heard the re-done 'this Sweet Old World' from a year or two ago?
You just don't see this stuff anymore
dancing with no shoes...
Neil young is Willie level.
I came to hear Neil sing.
He let his harmonica do the singing. :)
he knows when to sing, and when to refrain
Would have been interesting to hear him harmonize with Emilou, I think he could've added to the sound ... He's professional enough to know how to sing soft harmony along with the ladies.
great line up - what year please
1999...
