  • This is a short documentary following Simple Minds on the European leg of the Streetfighting Years Tour in 1989. It was broadcast on UK TV in 1990.
I've had to trim some small parts out of the video due to copyright infringements.

This was a pivotal moment for the band back then. After this tour, Mick MacNeil suggested that they take a break for a bit. He wanted to spend more time with his family, and frankly the previous 5 or 6 years of album releases and huge tours was taking its toll on them. Jim and Charlie were on a high and wanted to keep the momentum going, so Mick parted ways from them, and didn't come back. If they had taken a break, the band may be very very different 30+ years later.

I could never understand, why U2 got bigger than Simple Minds. Musicaly seen unbeatable, Simple Minds. Still great today.

yes it's true, I think they deserve more . I used to like U2 and I still do but nowadays I don't listen to them . Lately I rediscovered Simple Minds and I just can't stop to listen to them. The album New gold dream is a piece of art , songs like" Big Sleep ", "somebody up there likes you" also. I need to listen to them to satisfy my soul. I like their humbleness very much and I hope the new generation will make them shine and give them gold ❤❤❤

Simple Minds' record company dropped the ball with their 1985 breakthrough hit, Don't You Forget About Me. Although the single topped Billboard charts and the video won MTV awards, the song was only available on The Breakfast Club soundtrack album until it was finally included on their 1992 Greatest Hits album. Had Simple Minds released an album featuring DYFAM in 1985, it would've no doubt gone Platinum and propelled them into the top tier of international touring acts.

by the time this came out they had really crawled up their own arses, long gone was the excitement and originality of their first 5 brilliant albums, sparkle in the rain and once apon a time had some highlights but street fighting years was the start of their worst period, you should have done your friends a favour and bought them one of their earlier albums instead.

I remember when SFY came out. The shows were massive, the album did well in the U.K - but I definitely felt it was the end of the band and that they had big crowds at these gigs only because of the OUAT release - all successfull bands get an extension on goodwill from the fans from the previous album cycle. If the current album is a dud, the band will feel it on the next cycle. And boy did it hit the band hard on the Real Life tour. Walloped into reality.

A BIG thank you for this video. I recorded this doc to VHS from the TV back in 1989 with some others, transferred them to DVD in 2004. However, I discovered today while going through DVDs to transfer again to digital video it will no longer play - corrupt files (?). A great period in the Minds history. Thanks for sharing.

Sometimes David Brent (in musician mode) seems modelled on Jim Kerr, 22:41 pretty much nailed it

Once Forbes & MacNeil left, the magic was over.
For me, their best lineup was with MacNeil, Forbes, & McGee.
New Gold Dream was still an excellent album with Gaynor on many of the tracks. Once Upon a Time was good, but a departure from the previous stuff. Then it falls off a cliff.
