i used to live in moab n hve been on lions back tons.drunk in the dark is the only way to do it,fun.it takes bout 20 mins to turn around at the top.inch by inch forward, reverseforward etc
To those that have been up AND down, which way is more intense? I thought down would be until I saw this video. It's weird when something going so slow can be as intense as this is.
I'm probably the resident Lions Back expert on this video thread......first time up it in 1987.......been up and down it many times since...and in the dark....in a red 1984 Toyota longbed....and also in a white 1990 "98% stock 2% badass" Samurai. Camped at the top overnight once. What a beautiful sight to see the Main street of Moab from the top at night. I think coming down could be the scariest because you get to see a lot of landscape and you just became aware of how high up you really are. ZUK There is enough room for 2 Jeeps to go UP side by side. But it might be unnerving to some. I know it quite doable for a Jeep and Sami to go down side by side.....with room to spare for a biker in the middle. Me and an old friend were coming done side by side.....biker was pushing his bike up about midway when he suddenly realized us 2 were taking up most of the width... He looked left and right and had no place to go ......was panicking a little maybe.......I yelled down to him to not worry and stay right there.....to not move. As we both slowly went around him he had the biggest grin ear to ear and could only say KOOL. That was about 1993ish. He had a story to tell his buddies.....bet they said "NO WAY. You're making it up.....no way there's enough room". And then there is the backside..........
Yes ~ Still Suzuki but a 1.6L EFI swap from a tracker/sidekick. While doing work this engine was not especially strained in this video. Art's Samurai was well equipped with the proper gearing, suspension, and traction to conquer this challenge safely.
you would still have drive in the axle that still has a good shaft. having said that I think there is a video on RUclips of a crown vic going up lions back so it can be done in 2wd. probably not by some thing lifted and running 37"+ tires though.
That is in-feakin-sane... I have a fear of heights I can't even imagine going up that never mind going down
Gotta be so close to flipping over backwards the whole time. Mad skills, huge balls. Well done!
i'd like to meet the first person who thought hmmm i could drive up that and did.
Special forces. Killed in Afghanistan in 2007. He was a very giving, helpful 4x4 enthusiast.
beautiful, love the sound of the car, and the angle
Nothing better than a Samurai in Moab. hope to get back there one day
Art Lilly was a bad dude in many ways. RIP buddy
@hxcmexi
You dont... Lions back is a do or do not deal, there is no try.
My palms are dripping watching this. Don't know what is scarier, going up or coming back down!
I think, coming back down is the most difficult and scarier
I must hand it to you...........that is way too gnarly for me. Hats off!
What no turn around and down, thats the best part
AMAZING!!!!

I love Moab!
That is not a JEEP! It is a Suzuki.
Jeeps are only top heavy if you lift them over four inches, but hey it's your opinion not mine haha. I drive one and I love it.
one of the craziest things ive seen
I love climbs but that is insane. Would be too scary for me.
INSANE!!!!

UUUUUUUUUUUUUAAAAOOOOOOOO !!!!!
looks scarier on the inside then it does on the outside
@itzvincent329 4lo is not enough neither are brakes. You need badass gears and transfercases.
R.I.P. Art
nice job
It would be my luck that i'd forget to check the fuel before i went up and run out about half way to the top.. lol
I love off road and this just looks so F'up. You must have nerves of steel.
@turnfootsherlock Why not? It's one of those things you just have to do to understand it.
Nope it was barely working.
No it had to cases and one of them was a 6.5 to 1 I think.
What happens if you meet some one coming down lol?
lol, omg, thanx domi :)
I'd like to see somebody try that with a Nissan Leaf.
Rizaven What is a Nissan Leaf?
how much rpm was it maintaining up?
where do u go when u reach the top??
bad ass
Aim for the cloud on the right...right?
that engine must have been heating up when u got to the top since it was having a hard time going up
Nature's roller coaster? haha
4 lo the whole time goin up ? and 2 high goin down?
u got some balls dude
This samurai still have the suzuki engine in it? Lot of work on any engine especially a little one like that.

I suppose this comes for your long experience on the trails...
is that older samurai?
You either see sky or dirt
What…….no guard rails!
sounds like a Mog, must be those low gears whining.......nice ride.
stock gears????
look at the video tags
no balls, i'd throw it in neutral and go down backwards
Do you need lockers to do that?
i farted my way out of an elevator once
Sammi??
And if a drive shaft snaps?
