Hi Scott, how is the reliability on your disco? I am thinking about getting one but was worried about some of the issues. By the looks of it, you have taken yours to the edge and it hasn't failed. Anything I should look out for when buying a second hand one?
Mine has been excellent so far (touch wood). Of course the first six years is expected to be the best for any vehicle but I also think they are no worse for reliability than any similar or comparable large 4WD. Secondhand is difficult because there's such a range of ages and budgets these days. But I do know that maintenance history is by far the most important factor, more than distance on the clock and features fitted by a long margin. Serviced better than the long factory intervals is what you want.

Scott hi, great video. Our D4 here in the UK is same colour as yours! A question re. your Compomotive PD1881 wheels and KO2 tyres...... do you manage to fit one into the standard spare cradle under the back end of the car? Our Compomotive wheels and BFGs arrive next week, and hoping to carry the fifth matching wheel onboard. We’re opting for 265/65 R18 tyres.
Hi Rupert, love the Nara Bronze. The 265/65/R18 is a VERY tight fit and needs to be almost fully deflated and then forced in. I know because I’ve just upgraded to this size in the Nitto Ridge Grappler. So you need to fight with it somewhat to get it in and out and carry an air compressor which I know have permanently installed under the passenger seat anyway. But yes it can be done.
Touch wood nothing has broken, so only replaced things proactively for preventative maintenance. The front lower control arm bushes could be classed as "broken" by some but I see them as a maintenance item that wears out. Other than that, all fluids and filters have been replaced obviously some more than once in the 125,000km it's traveled. I don't have exact figures but I'd say at least 50% of its life is offroad.
Awesome video mate. Loved it. I have the same one and want to do a similar set up with roof rack, awning etc. Where did you get yours from and installed? Cheers
I am about to buy a d4 at 180k km on the clock and it is 2010 model. Everyone says that these cars are so very prone to failures especially motor and air suspension system. How do you manage to keep it working even using in these harsh conditions? Does the air suspension fails after hard off roading ?
I’ve had zero issues with the air suspension and it is a relatively simple system to troubleshoot anyway. Just takes a bit of knowledge and research. Keeping in mine that mine is 2014 and I’d say a 10 year old system like yours would be due for some parts replacement or rebuild, eg valve blocks.
Amazing stuff! Do you have the HD package with the rear locker and Wade sensing? Would you consider trimming the wheel well to fit in larger tires? Thanks for the videos 😃
No rear locker and no wade sensing. I would love to have the locker but for majority of situations the traction control is fantastic. I've never failed an obstacle where my mate who has a rear locker in his D4 has cleared it. No I personally don't see the need to trim anything to run bigger tyres. I run 265/60/R18 and I never get left behind. I'd be happy to run 265/65/R18 and a few of my mates do run that size but bigger than that is just unnecessary.
Hi, Love the vid. How do you rate the compmotive rims vs the tiffany steely's ? I am tossing up between the compmotive alloys Vs tuffant alloys vs tuffant steely's. thanks. See you out there!!
From a purely off-road perspective the Tuffant steel wheels would be first choice. If aesthetics are a consideration then alloys come in to play, assuming you're looking for one wheel to cover all situations. I'm lucky to have two sets of 18" wheels but I also bought before any Tuffant existed. If I was looking for one set of wheels now it would probably be the Tuffant alloy but prefer the steel wheel for longterm remote travel.
I have Tuff Ants on my D4 and they're excellent. The smaller diameter (18") makes the D4 so much better in sand than 21's (?!?) it had when I bought it. Don't know what the previous owner was thinking. Maybe he was a drug dealer... Word of warning re the Compos though. Not the quality of the rim itself, I'm sure they're great. This issue was with the importer. I had ordered a set before I got the Tuff Ants but they just never showed up, lots of unanswered emails, missed delivery dates, etc etc, and had to delay a trip to Fraser. Eventually I had to raise an complaint with PayPal just to get my $$ back and all the while it was total radio silence from the importer. From what I've heard, this is not uncommon.
Hi Scott, great video, thanks for sharing. Which off road modes have you found more useful? When you drove it in the dunes, did you use sand mode or did you disable traction control? Cheers!
Cheers. For the terrain we drive usually Rock Crawl and Mud Ruts are the best modes. For dune driving I generally find no modes & low range are required but with DSC turned off usually works the best. When the sand conditions are more variable then Sand mode can be useful but turning off DSC is the most important thing, that and tyre pressure!
@@AnkurNeupane On road/bitumen pressure is at least 40 psi for the LT rated tyres I use, often higher than that if I'm fully loaded. For gravel and rocks it depends on how rough/rocky the situation and more importantly what the traction is like. I don't typically go lower than 30 psi unless struggling for traction on steeper terrain.
What a fantastic vid and example of the D4 capabilities. And to be fair you now how to drive that thing! Unlike other 4wds, when you lose traction , you actually keep the power on (unless your beaching like a whale of course;) Wish me luck on our upcoming Simpson Crossing 😊
Varies a lot to suit surface and how loaded etc. for the steep rocky stuff it’ll be around 24-28 psi and lower from there if required. General offroad I find mid 30’s to be good especially if running heavy for a trip.
Scott, What is the standard psi for day to day road driving on the 18” on All Terrain tires? Also, could you share your experience if there were any pinching issues when you lowered the psi. Been scouring the web and the general advise is to increase the psi (even when with 18”) to avoid pinching and the that lowering the psi is only helpful in situation of sand. Your input would be most helpful.
Hi scot, thanks for your motivating LR4 I appreciate my LR4 when I see your clip often, since I got my LR4 2014 recently, I can't find the headlights flashing mood as it is in your video, could you please tell me how can I use this function of the dynamic headlights ?
It’s not a function, the LEDs are pulsed and the pulse rate can be seen by the video but not by eye. I haven’t found a suitable frame rate that makes it appear normal
It’s a trick of the video that’s not visible to the eye. Some LEDs are controlled via pulsing to set light output and the camera catches this. The D4 seems to be particularly prone to it.
A great compilation. Great to see the Disco doing what it loves. Thankyou. We've owned a LRD4 2011 for 12 months now. Very happy with it. Just curious, what tyres are you running as we are in the market for new ones but limited with the standard 19" alloys?
I’ve been on 18” wheels for over 5 years now and there’s plenty of choice. For 19” it’s still somewhat limited but for offroad and remote travel I would be going for the Maxxis 980 which is the only proper LT spec tyre in 255/55/R19
@@sienaoverland thankyou Scott, I'll check them ou. May I ask what 18" wheels you are running as I was told that size wouldn't fit due to the size of the front brake calipers?
Thanks. Bullbar decision is a judgement of our risk profile versus weight/cost/aesthetic. We avoid driving at dusk and into the night and this reduces the risk significantly. I also think quite a lot of run-ins with roos are side hits where the bull bar makes no difference. Of course you get random animal strikes at any time of the day and we may get unlucky and regret it one day but I think it’s a low enough risk.
Awesome compilation Scott, thanks for sharing. There seems to be several different tyres used on the 18” wheels, which is your favourite and would run again?
I have run Bridgestone D697 / BFG KO2 / Monsta Mud Warrior / Mickey Thompson Deegan 38 AT My criteria has always been well rated LT spec tyres with good tread. Remote roads in Australia are tough. These tyres all have benefits and I would recommend all of them but it depends on your needs. To be fair the Mickey T's have only just been fitted and not used offroad yet so I can only really comment on the other ones. The best all-rounder for strength, traction and capability in all conditions has been the KO2s. However they cost a lot more than the D697s or the Monsta. Things changed for me when I got the Tuffant steel wheels, which allowed me to run mud tyres AND all terrains. So I decided to try the Mickey T's because I have less need for aggressive tread on the touring wheels and they are very solid but also well mannered and quiet on-road, which makes up the bulk of long range touring for most big trips. But, if I could only pick one tyre to do everything now? I'd probably be getting a set of BFG KM3s.
Hi Owen, I assume you mean D4 specific spares rather than things that should be taken for any 4WD and that list is not too long. What comes to mind; air filter / wheel speed sensor / suspension height sensors / intercooler hose / one of the common relays. I think there's a couple more things but can't remember exactly. Forum threads have been useful to come up with common issues for which spares are worth carrying.
Scott great build, one question I have is if in the future can you make a short video on how you installed your mud flaps, the stock d4 are not to my taste and your diy mod of disco 2 in front and defender in rear looks really good, I want to do similar set up
I may do a few install videos. Bit hard once the mod is finished though. Not that keen to take something off or pull it apart just to make a video. The mudflaps are pretty simple, the front ones don't need any changes and the rears just need a piece cut off to avoid the exhaust pipe.
Suspension is stock but I have a Llams unit installed. This allows more control over height when you need it and is much more convenient than rods llams.com.au/
What size wheels and tires you got on there? And do you think it would be as capable or as easy to drive off-road if it had a manual gearbox? Ie a 79 series land cruiser?

Looking good. Any maintenance issues?
Six years almost and no significant maintenance issues (touch wood).
what a dream car is!!!
I want a LR4 😢
Hi Scott, great video, thanks for sharing.
Which off road modes have you found more useful?
When you drove it in the dunes, did you use sand mode or did you disable traction control?
Cheers!
Cheers. For the terrain we drive usually Rock Crawl and Mud Ruts are the best modes. For dune driving I generally find no modes & low range are required but with DSC turned off usually works the best. When the sand conditions are more variable then Sand mode can be useful but turning off DSC is the most important thing, that and tyre pressure!
@@sienaoverland What pressures do you use for on road and for gravel/rocks (1:32)?
@@AnkurNeupane On road/bitumen pressure is at least 40 psi for the LT rated tyres I use, often higher than that if I'm fully loaded. For gravel and rocks it depends on how rough/rocky the situation and more importantly what the traction is like. I don't typically go lower than 30 psi unless struggling for traction on steeper terrain.
What a fantastic vid and example of the D4 capabilities. And to be fair you now how to drive that thing! Unlike other 4wds, when you lose traction , you actually keep the power on (unless your beaching like a whale of course;)
Wish me luck on our upcoming Simpson Crossing 😊
Scott, another great video! What PSI do you typically have when off roading?
Varies a lot to suit surface and how loaded etc. for the steep rocky stuff it’ll be around 24-28 psi and lower from there if required. General offroad I find mid 30’s to be good especially if running heavy for a trip.
Scott H Thanks good to know. I run 28 psi on the 265s on the LR4. There is room for lower psi.
Scott,
What is the standard psi for day to day road driving on the 18” on All Terrain tires?
@@sienaoverland thank you dear for the clarification
it's such a nice car
How do you get the headlights to do that cool fancy flashing mode plz?
It’s a trick of the video that’s not visible to the eye. Some LEDs are controlled via pulsing to set light output and the camera catches this. The D4 seems to be particularly prone to it.
Great footage Scott, I still miss my D3. (Rich from AULRO)
Richard Milton hey Rich good to hear from you. I wish I had some footage going up Firetruck Hill following your D3. That was a good day 👍🏻
A great compilation.
I have Tuffant wheels designed to fit over the brakes. They now have alloy and steel versions. There’s also Compomotive.
Thankyou Scott.👍
Loved every second of that. Great to see a fellow LR owner using it for what they were intended. Can I ask you reason for not having a bull bar?
Nice Vid Scott, noticed the build on AULRO. Great work!
Thanks mate.
Does your Disco 4 have rear locker? I just got a Disco 4 myself and really loving it!
@@adv_addict no rear e-diff, just standard on mine
@@sienaoverland mine doesn't have rear locker either. Glad to see how capable the car is even without locker!
Hey what mods have you done to it ? I’ve just got a disco 4 and want to build it up similar to this
Check out one of my other videos. I go through all the mods and stuff

AMAZING CAR-TANK.
Nice Scott 🤟
Thanks 👍
Did you upgrade the headlights?
Sure did. Sourced genuine Valeo (OEM) ones from the UK.
Great clips, just wondering if your Disco has the active rear diff lock?
No, just standard diff.
Really great video! What beach were you driving on?
Thanks very much. Moreton Island. Links to my island videos > ruclips.net/video/p5-dJFjwHno/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/JQBtS3FL1k8/видео.html
I believe lots of parts had to be replaced after this adventure. Fun though
Lol. No parts have required replacement after any of my adventures.
Awesome compilation Scott, thanks for sharing. There seems to be several different tyres used on the 18” wheels, which is your favourite and would run again?
I have run Bridgestone D697 / BFG KO2 / Monsta Mud Warrior / Mickey Thompson Deegan 38 AT
My criteria has always been well rated LT spec tyres with good tread.
An awesome car
Hi Scott, when you went touring what spares did you take? I also have a D4. Cheers Owen
Some extra photos on my web page.

@@sienaoverland thanks Scott
do you use a leveling kit or any "suspension hacks" such as Johnson's Rods? or is the suspension stock?
Suspension is stock but I have a Llams unit installed. This allows more control over height when you need it and is much more convenient than rods

Does this Discovery have a rear locker?
No, just the standard setup
Schönes Auto. Würde mit auch super gefallen. Leider ist der Benzinverbrauch doch recht hoch. Schöne Grüße und noch viel Spaß ronactive
Sind grossten teils Diesel. Die hier ist ne TDV6.
What size wheels and tires you got on there?
And do you think it would be as capable or as easy to drive off-road if it had a manual gearbox? Ie a 79 series land cruiser?
Details in description. I find auto box so much easier offroad, especially for sand etc. no momentum loss when you least need it.
What is your tyre setup
see video description for details of setups in this video. Current setup is Tuffant 18" Kimberley wheels and 265/60/R18 tyres Maxxis Razr AT811

Great car!
so true
I am on low budget but I am willing to buy LR4 for my long drive to Nepal when I retire from the Army. Any suggestion/ rig up will be appreciate.
Pay close attention to its service history is the main thing to consider.
What wheels and tires are you running...?
Details in description. But these days I'm running Tuffant Kimberley LT and Maxxis Razr AT811
What is the engine displacement on that LR4? 5.0 gas or 3.0 bi-turbo diesel?
3.0L TDV6
How did you manage without bull bar? Any kangaroo hits?
None so far. We tend to avoid driving at high risk times in more remote locations where roo strikes are more common.
Can someone guide me on where I can get the original discovery 4 emblems those are not available here in the us.
Generally best thing is UK suppliers. Have a look at PowerfulUK for a start.
custom roof rack?
No it’s just a Rhinorack Pioneer Platform
Hi Scott. Noticed the front lights were blinking. Is this an aftermarket module installed or just a video frame rate thingy?
Just video frame rate. It’s annoying but I can’t seem to find a video setting that does t do it, at least not with the iPhone.
Witch diesel engine is a best ? 3.0 v6 from Peugeot is ok?
3.0L TDV6
@@sienaoverland thx, from Peugeot?
What are the rims and tires are you using?
Details in description.
Love the footage, curious about why you’ve sped up so much of the hill climbing stuff. It seems to be 1.25 times normal speed not much. But just enough to annoy.
Hi Mark, none of the footage is sped up.
Scott H Thanks for messaging me. Maybe it was something I did in my playback setting without noticing it. Still love the footage and enjoyed it.
