Hi, I've just seen your video and wanted to know where you got your mat from? It's amazing!! I'm from the UK and want to know if I can get it here? Thanks!!
Can you please make a video showing how to transfer a completely decorated cake into a box and then assemble. It may seem silly but I am terrified of ruining my cakes decorations when transferring the cake to a new location. Are there any specific things that I should put under the cake to move them?
@miriamyluky Hello Miriam, For the convenience of our spanish speaking friends and customers we are working on the translation of our videos. We would like to know which video you would like us to translate first. - Kathy and Nely
@patrice19511 Straight from our online store. Just click on or name, sweetwiseinc under each video. You can click on the links at the top of our channel to shop from our store. Be sure to subscribe to our cannel so you can see when we post new videos. We've got an incredible sale on colored Fondant right now!
@ColeeCole27 When using THE MAT, I roll it to only 1/8" thick. You would have to go thicker than that if not using it. Great way to reduce food costs and increase your profits (or at least spend less on your hobby)!
Hexagons, same technique- just pretend its round. Watch the video one more time- One inch down, all the way around, then two inches down, all the way around, etc.
@yencna We love Fondx fondant and Elite fondant by Fondx. Fondx is a really great tasting easy to work w/ Fondant. Elite is by the same manufacturer but is a premium fondant. Elite formula uses chocolate and lecithin to hold incredible color and moisture. Both are available from Sweet Wise. Our online store should open next week but in the meantime you can order by calling the store at 615-874-1445. Thanks for watching our videos! We hope you subscribe
Check out our website in the description on the video above. You can hover over the bulletin board, and you'll see some great, sturdy recipes there. Try my Ultimate Chocolate. It is SO good.
@lmcous You should just be able to wipe it clean with a lint free cloth or paper towel. If it gets "gunky", you canwash it in the sink with warm soapy water. Depending on how well used, or "broken in" yours is, you may or may not have to re-season it. Newer ones you might have to, older, more pliable ones, you won't. Generally, though, a wipe down will do it.
Thank you so much! This was of great help! Looking forward to trying to cover my first square cake next week! (although not completely square, more soft corners, so I'm hoping it'll be even easier)
@kristawilliam1 Just slide a spatula underneath the edge of the board the cake its on, lift slightly so you can get your fingers underneath, put down your spatula, then slide the fingers of your other hand underneath. I usually "hover" over the cake that will be supporting it (which has dowel rods in it), then quickly drop it. If you are merely moving it from a work surface to the box it is being transported in, also use the spatula to let it down into the box gently.
I prefer my cakes cold, yes. I put on a light to medium thick crumb coat on the cake, but NOT thick. Then it goes back in the fridge. Once I have rolled out my fondant (using THE MAT, of course), the cake comes out of the fridge. It will naturally develop a little moisture from coming into a different temperature zone- that allows the fondant to adhere to the icing, so there isn't a need to add more icing at this point. Enjoy it! Thanks so much!
@SimpLiiEmEy If you use a professional brand like Fondx on cake that is to be served, the fondant will not get hard. If you are using fondant on a faux cake, yes the fondant will eventually become hard.
@fkkbtv Sweet Wise suggests rolling fondant to 1/8" to 3/16" thin. Rolling fondant thin is easy w/ THE MAT and fondant that is not so thick improves mouth feel/taste as well dramaticallly reducing food cost.
@milly8a88 Making fondant can be really hard on your mixer motor; I burned up 2 Kitchen Aids doing it. There are a lot of good fondant products out there now, definitely worth buying it (but not at a craft store.......). Definitely use The Mat to make it easier to manage!!!!!
@natyownsyourface The first thing you need to do is make sure you have a nice even top surface, as well as every layer in the cake. Put a little extra batter in your pan, about 2/3 full, so you can cut straight across the top of the pan after it is baked, and have a perfectly square edge there. After you ice and fondant, you will have a nice square edge by using 2 fondnat smoothers, pulling them together towards the top edge.
@jenyhsweetsurprise Absolutely reusable; many years of use. You can usually just wipe it with a clean, lint free paper towel. Some like to wipe it with sanitizing wipes, which is fine, just make sure it's 100% dry before storing it and using it again!
With THE Home or Pro MAT, you don't need to coat with oil at all. Instead make sure you clean it well to get rid of the factory residue. A disinfecting wipe works best.
Hi Kara, You can purchase THE MAT at Sweet Wise Online Store. Glycerin is a great solution for keeping your cake moist. If your fondant is not too far gone you can add shortening to soften. Lecithin and Glycerin are also helpful in returning fondant to a usable state.
I actually prefer to roll it to 1/8". It sounds like yours is too thick, and that it is a little dry. The Mat helps keep it 100% moist while you are rolling it out.
I use satin ice fondant and have had some difficulties with it. Such is it drying out too fast and it cracks. Or it gets too sticky but if I put more ice and sugar on it then it dries out way too fast. When I try to lift it on a cake it totally rips too I own a fat Daddio's silicone mat that I use. as well as I have tried using a fondant roller to lift it but it just broke or stuck together. Ahh Fondant The one thing that stresses me out. Really got a master that one. Love making figures though with fondant but covering it May look easy but it's not a piece a cake 😉
For anyone who has not used the Mat, I can't stress enough how wonderful it is. I have no connection with the Mat except that I've used it for a little more than a year and it makes using fondant as easy as frosting with buttercream. Don't think that you can use vinyl from the hardware store or other sources because they aren't food safe. The weight of the Mat is exactly as you should have to make using fondant dream. I find the best part of the Mat is that you actually use less fondant for some reason. I have just about every item in my baking kitchen and the Mat is right up there with my KitchenAid as indespensible.
When you put fondant on your cakes, are the cakes usually cold? Do you crumb coat then fondant, or crumb coat, put more icing, then fondant?!! Thanks in advance! I bought a Pro Mat yesterday, can't wait to get it in!!!!
I always get loads of fondant on the corners, is this because I haven't rolled out the fondant big enough? it drives me mad or doesn't fall into place like yours. thank you
thankyou so much it was so much easier using this method and it worked brillantly i covered three cakes using this method it was so easy and they looked great,i will always use this method now thankyou once again.
Great video. I've only just started doing fondant cakes and I've made a zombie head and a christening cake. Wide variety huh? I'm guessing to make a polka dotted cake you'd do the same for the zebra cake?
You can always give it a try!... I think the secret is in the food grade quality of the material and the static that I suppose is produced beteween the 2 sheets and makes the fondant adhere without letting it drop.
Hi Sweetwise.. your video is so helpful and you make it look easy.. However i really curious about the cake that you cover with buttercream (I mean Swiss Meringue Buttercream), are we able to cover "swiss meringue" with fondant for all of the cake(tall cake/Bigg cake)? because buttercream is very slippery "i personally think". Thankyou so much :)
You made it look so easy. The cake I'll be making will be 9'x13" double layered for my friend's 30th birthday party. If my cake turns out half as good as this, I'll be a happy woman. I'm thrilled to have found this video.
I bought the mat and its fab, made such easy work of rolling the the right size, depth etc, it was so easy to place the final fondant on the cake, thought my fondant troubles were over until...... my fondant has gone really wet and sticky, its my daughters 18th birthday cake and am in a real panic as I cant decorate the cake in its current state can anyone give me any advice o how to overcome my problem.
Just wanted to share with you - this individual video was a BIG help for me in covering the square/rectangle wedding cakes I made this past week. Would love to share the photo with you. This video really did help me out!
I really enjoyed watching this. I'm making a castle cake for my niece's birthday and this really helps out a lot! Thank you so much for making this video.
Hi there, I've just purchased a home mat lately and looking forward to use it this weekend! Before I use it can I just lightly spray it with vegetable oil instead of solid shortening?
Awesome video! where do I purchase the mat? How do I keep my cake from tasting dry and `how do I get my fondant to get back soft to roll out...its rock hard from previous use. Thanks!
In 6 1/2 minutes my cake covering has improved dramatically!! And I have now covered my very first square cake! Thank you so much!

I am going to make a Roblox noob cake with fondant for my brothers birthday lol

@Nidsy Straight from our online store. It is now active, you can get to it from our youtube channel.
@kakishisfriend1126 Absolutely! Look in our video section for Easter cookies- I did one there.
@fkkbtv Sweet Wise suggests rolling fondant to 1/8" to 3/16" thin. Rolling fondant thin is easy w/ THE MAT and fondant that is not so thick improves mouth feel/taste as well dramaticallly reducing food cost.
@1974cadena This is most likely due to the texture and consistancy of your cake. Your cake might be a little too dry causing it to break/crumble.
It's actually called THE MAT. You can order it straight from us, but you can also get it at THE CAKE DECORATING COMPANY in the UK.
@gaby20122 You can, just make sure your recipe isn't sticky, that it has enough powdered sugar added!
@milly8a88 Making fondant can be really hard on your mixer motor; I burned up 2 Kitchen Aids doing it. There are a lot of good fondant products out there now, definitely worth buying it (but not at a craft store.......). Definitely use The Mat to make it easier to manage!!!!!

nice method but sometimes my fondant tends to break what to do?????????
Yes, THE MAT will completely eliminate this problem. Many people think THE MAT is the best cake decorating tool to come out in the last decade.
Hi Kara,
You can purchase THE MAT at Sweet Wise Online Store. Glycerin is a great solution for keeping your cake moist. If your fondant is not too far gone you can add shortening to soften. Lecithin and Glycerin are also helpful in returning fondant to a usable state.
That is a great idea. Yes, we'll make that video for you. Make sure you subscribe so you'll know when the video has been uploaded.
At Sweet Wise, we like Fondx and Satin Ice. You can purchase both from our online store.
@13lolalover Sure THE MAT is reusable. In fact... the more you use it the better it works. It is also great for pie dough and roll out cookies. :)
Very helpful video, fluffing the fondant while you go around was the best tip to avoid ripping.
I actually prefer to roll it to 1/8". It sounds like yours is too thick, and that it is a little dry. The Mat helps keep it 100% moist while you are rolling it out.
You can easily fix. Take a look at our Fondant Survival Video.
@zachariass Shucks, thanks!
Yay!
About 1.7 lbs should be enough if you're using THE MAT.
@PakkProductions Absolutely!
@tarapos Well, thanks!
im a dude and i have never baked a cake in my life......yet i kinda always wondered how they did that so i watched it hahah

Buttercream
Bravo! Excellent demonstration. Thank you!
Would marshmallow fondant work for a square cake?
Yes, it should work fine.

the mat is reusable right? how many times can you use it before it wears off? and how do you clean it after each use? thanks so much! =)
Thanks! Good luck with it!
I always get loads of fondant on the corners, is this because I haven't rolled out the fondant big enough? it drives me mad or doesn't fall into place like yours. thank you
For the 12" square (4" high) I use 3 pounds 5 oz (1.5 kilo).
Thank you for your video. On ya hubby for noticing defects.
Is there any way to fix the paste if it breaks and fall apart? Mine tends to do that when you pull it out from the cake...
Why do you mention "not at a craft store"? This seems to be the only place I can find fondant... Should I buy online?
What recipe of yellow cake do you recomend to achive that sturdy cake? Do you have a web page with the recipes??
Make sure you only roll it out to a 1/4 inch thickness. This will hide any imperfections in the cake as well.
Hi I'm going to make a rectangle cake and had nooooo idea how to cover a cake with fondant thanks for the tutorial it helped heaps😃😃😃😃😃👍🏻🎂🍰
Wish I saw this before I tried my first fondant today. Haha.
This might be a dumb question but..
Is there anything you put ontop of the cake before the fondant?
I'm guessing that I can use this method to apply a layer of marzipan as well, right?
Great video. Glad your husband noticed your mistake, it helped even more. P,S do you have a butter cream recipe you could share.
how many grams/pounds of fondant you used for that cake?
'sure i learn a lot to your educational fondant videos its a big help for biggeners like me. Hope to see and learn more from you' thanks
How much is the mat and how may I place my order please?
Do you have to freeze the cake before covering with fondont
thankyou so much it was so much easier using this method and it worked brillantly i covered three cakes using this method it was so easy and they looked great,i will always use this method now thankyou once again.

Super helpful, thank you! Quite relaxing to watch too!
what kind of fondant do u use? looks really soft and nice, do u make it?
So if I were to cut up a vinyl shower curtain ( brand new ) would that work just as well as " the mat "?
You can always give it a try!... I think the secret is in the food grade quality of the material and the static that I suppose is produced beteween the 2 sheets and makes the fondant adhere without letting it drop.
