  • This clip is from the TV series Babylon V, season 4, episode 18 - "Intersections in Real Time". While watching the show, I could not help but think about the events we have happening in our time. Secret prisoner holding cells, indefinite imprisonment without trial and torture. All in the name of liberty.
    Lady Liberty must be crying.

What happens to Sheridan in this episode is fucked up, but that’s why it’s stayed with me for so many years. When this aired in 1997 I was 15 years old and Mom had just met my future stepdad... I barely knew him and I could tell he was a control freak and not good for our family. This episode put everything in perspective and made me realize I would always stick up for myself against him even though I was just a tiny teenage girl and he was a huge beast of a man. Some People say fiction inspires people negatively but I’ve never had that... it’s only ever inspired me in positive ways. Sheridan might be a rarity, maybe even the strongest of us can’t be strong all the time, but I love that he anchors himself to his beliefs no matter what they do. He’s a very admirable character.

Even without the cancer I think he was doomed because he never took care of his Type 2 diabetes at all, he also developed heart and kidney problems a few years before he died. You are exactly right about how inspiring this actually is. As a staunch individualist, watching Sheridan refuse to bend to the false reality being imposed on him makes me really emotional even thinking about it. I’m glad you were able to find solace in what can be a soul crushing episode, yet still idly inspiring in other ways.

They were also saying that the truth is subjective, open to interpretation, All it takes is one person to draw a line in the sand when it betrays our conscience and say "No", thats what sheriden did when the interogator kept asking to say yes to a downfall of a society, and total loss of self, and he retorted No. Sheriden said that its all on the outside, its flesh as long as you don't break inside they can't win. Some prefer the TNG episode because Picard breaks, it's more realistic, but Picard is lost with no hope of rescue and nothing to prevent brutal treatment, whereas Sheridan knows where he is, knows that the resistance and his fleet are on the way and knows they won't really hurt him because they want him to publicly confess.

Revisiting this brought to mind another comparison, from a more recent movie. The heart of the evil in this is the acceptance of evil actions because they are required and approved by the organization.
I recently re-watched Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and, again, found myself shocked by the casual acceptance of procedure as good in the scene where the custodians casually, smilingly removed the memories from Tina's mind in preparation for killing her. The fact that such a facility existed is chilling.
Yet, people do equivalent things "in the name of good" all the time. Power corrupts. Small submissions to evil lead to larger submissions.
The end never justifies the means.

As for Heaven vs Hell -- since its foundation, the Christian Church has had an internal debate about what happens, which led to the concept of Purgatory. -- I suspect we won't/can't understand fully until it is our turn to leave on that journey.

The Drazi was part of the act. The point is that there is never an end to the torture. They will never give up on breaking him. Everything he sees, hears or eats while in prison is potentially a trap or a way to trick him. And if one torturer fails, they'll simply move him on to the next one, and then the next, and then the next, and then the next, until Sheridan finally gives up or can't take any more.

I like to imagine a short story scenario, where President Sheridan has the rangers do a top secret mission: "rendition" this interrogator off to some backwater barely-habitable planet. Sheridan personally confronts him. He's scared shitless, screaming that he has rights.
Sheridan silences him, and remarks, "You once said we were all expandable. That's more true of you than ever, and worse. You are inconvenient. You are someone Earthdome would love to forget ever existed. They can't risk embarrassment by putting you on trial. But if you were to quietly disappear, no one would care, no one would question. And that brings you to me. I can't put you on trial either. The ISA can't afford the political blowback. But I can't let you escape consequences for your actions either. So, I do the only convenient thing I can do.
Every government throughout history has had its gulags. Secret prisons. I was a guest in yours. Now you are a guest of mine. I always thought the ISA would be different, but appears I was wrong. This planet is uninhabited and remote. There is no water or anything remotely edible for miles. Your only escape is death. But please accept this gift. (Sheridan drops a box on the ground). The gift of choice. Goodbye Mr. Interrogator."
With that, Sheridan boards his shuttle and leaves for good. The Interrogator cautiously opens the box. In it he finds a bottle of whiskey, a presumably-poisoned corned beef sandwich, and the "choice": a PPG pistol with a single charge.
