I don't see why a game where the main character is the 'Fastest Thing Alive' has to have a stealth section where in any normal situation, he could run right through it without getting caught, even with running right through the stealth lights. Sonic could run away when those bats show up, but NOPE! Gotta give up on life!

***** I thought the controls were slippery as fuck despite the Parkour being better than how it is in the HD version, and the forced gyroscope controls at points made it even worse. Then to have bad level design based a lot around bottomless pits and forcing you to use the Wisps to complete the stages instead of SONIC just ruined the game for me. Thank goodness the Wii U version had an update to let you use the control stick for the most part.

I donated to the Dreamfall Chapters Kickstarter, and one of the stretchgoals was that the developers would livestream them playing all of Dreamfall in one sitting. All I remember from Indigo Prophecy is "Don't move or I'll shoot!" "Don't move or I'll shoot!" "Don't move or I'll shoot!"
That was the one that stood out in my mind the most, but I did remember a semi-stealth section in Professor Layton x Ace Attorney. To be fair, it was all still a puzzle, but the premise was that you were sneaking around guards. It was both cleverly done and frustrating lol.
Another one that stands out in my mind because I did it recently was the Skyward Sword stealth section, but I actually thought that was pretty fun, so...
    Thanks for the list!

  • @armchairrocketscientist4934

Personally, I thought that the forsaken fortress in windwaker was actually a nice change of pace. I'm going to make a bunch of people really hate me right now, but my least favorite part of most Zelda games is the dungeons. Zelda is my all time favorite game series, but for some reason, I just feel like dungeons are a chore. People always complain "I hate Windwaker because there are so few dungeons" but I am all to happy not to go do the same chore about 8 times. Windwaker is a unique game, because it actually feels like a story to me. What do you think Lord of the Rings would be like if they went into the mines of moria eight times? Windwaker is different than other Zelda games. Sometimes, you don't do a dungeon to get an important main quest item. Sometimes you revisit dungeons. While I will admit, the forsaken fortress isn't my favorite part of windwaker, you have to admit it feels awesome coming back to it later in the game and beating the crap out of everyone.

Saying it again, Top Five Methods of Flight. The remarkable features for each slot can be something like how you get it (godbird in dragon quest 8), how absurd the actual method is (township/boatship in bravely default/second), or even just how fun it is (that parachute/grapple thing in far cry 3)

    My list is...
-That one stealth section from Minish Cap where you need to avoid the guards around Hyrule Castle
-That one stealth section from Ocarina of Time where you need to avoid the guards around Hyrule Castle
-That one stealth section from Spirit Tracks where you need to avoid the guards around Hyrule Castle
-That one stealth section from Majora's Mask where you need to avoid the Deku guards around the Deku Palace
-That one stealth section from Skyward Sword where you need to avoid the Boboklin guards around the ruins on Eldin Volcano
-Those four stealth sections from Skyward Sword where you need to avoid the guards of light around a new dimension created by the gods just to test if I can run fast enough to be the next icarnation of Link
Hmmm... I can see a pattern there.

That one part from Ocarina of Time where you gotta save the stupid builders from the desert thieves. Seriously, why's there one for each era?

Personally I've always been fine with Wind Waker's stealth section, it does cause the game to start slow, but sets up the story well, with your attempt to save your sister and defeat Gannondorf failing. Also I hope the two times that the stealth section from Metroid Zero Mission popped up weren't implying you thought it was bad, because it was great.

The first time I played through the Forsaken Fortress in Wind Waker, I thought that the game was ripping off Sly Raccoon. That game came out one year before Wind Waker mind you and it has exactly the same elements: A barrel to slowly sneak around in, guards with lights that will kick your ass if you're discovered and of course small ledges against walls to get across. I pretty much pretended I was playing Sly Raccoon for the Forsaken Fortress and never minded it again for the rest of the game.

One thing I love about Abyss is if you mess up enough on the stealth section, you just get to kill everyone there instead. That was always my approach since I was pretty bad at it. Turning the enemies into mincemeat? Now that I can do! And I get experience for t!
I got held up by the stealth section/following Pete in Days for years. Not because it was hard, but because I had a broken camera button on my regular DS Lite, I had eventually put the game away and kind of forgot I had it. Looking thru my game collection recently, I had found it again, and decided on giving that section another attempt on my 3DS. Nailed it in two tries.

Anything involving stealth in Grand Theft Auto is worst because you're used to being trigger happy with taking out enemies, but then a stealth section slows it down. Worst offender is the Freighter approach to the Merryweather Heist in GTA V

You show Sonic: Lost World a few times, but wasn't there an even worse stealth bit in Sonic '06 where guards walk back and forth like Frogger enemies while there are a bunch of random barrels strewn about for no in-universe reason that you could hide behind? Didn't Grand Theft Auto IV have something like this, too?

Really random kind of comment out of nowhere on a video over a year old, but regarding the Forsaken Fortress, I find that it's a lot better when you're aware of the fact that there are only three places that you're actually put up against getting caught that you can't avoid: the central courtyard with the searchlights when you first get there, the room at the north point of the map, and the one guard just above there who's super easy to avoid with any patience. End up in any of the others and it's faster and easier to just get caught so you can get back to the jail cell, which is on the second floor so you can avoid the rest. ...Wish I could tell 10-year-old me that.

Hotline Miami's Stealth segment makes perfect sense chronologically from where it is, and the visual effects and stuff come together for it to fit in with the 80s vibe. Everything that you have played up until that point did in fact happen, just not when you relived it as Jacket. You were in a Coma after another killer, who we find out is called Richter in HM2, shot you and killed your girlfriend. As you've just awoken from this Coma, you're disoriented, bleary and dizzy, hence why you can't move too fast. This also means you'd be unable to fight off the cops, doctors and guards who you have to sneak past.
I wouldn't call the segment well-designed, but in terms of story it fits in just fine.

I just experienced the worst stealth section yesterday. It's in COD: Advanced Warfare. For the entire game it's "charge forward and kill the guys, charge forward and kill the guys." Then, out of no where, I need to stealth and not kill everything I see. And right after, it goes right back to "charge and kill" without ever mentioning stealth again.

I'd argue Forsaken Fortress does teach a number of valuable skills. Sure, the barrel sneaking isn't terribly worthwhile, but something like the use of disposable weapons is. It forces you to fight with those sticks, knowledge you can also apply to other such weapons, like a Moblin's spear, which can be helpful sometimes. It also teaches the player basic dungeon navigation in a place where you don't really risk dying much, as well as some simple puzzle solving and also testing if the player understands how to swing on ropes at that point. It even rewards the player if they go out of their way to explore and find the Heart Piece (as well as some rupees, perhaps).

I actually do like the Forsaken Fortress, and you don't even have to go through the stealth sections - enemies are only on the bottom floor while you just have to go through the upper one. Kill the three bokoblins and go to Aryll, that's it. If you fall down, you're gonna have to sneak past the enemies, but only then.

Only example I can recall off the top of my head of a terrible stealth section is a minigame in Runescape where you have to sneak through a garden maze to get to some sacred fruit. Runescape is controlled entirely by the mouse and how long it takes between clicking and actually moving your character works based on the quality of your internet (because it's an MMO) and a really bad "game tick" system. Not fun. You're required to do it for a quest, too.

The only one I have enjoyed was the one in Overlord 2. The green minions you control constantly run, so the pace doesn't seem slower. and you only hide from enemies long enough to back stab them, and they do not re-spawn when you are cought.

i found spirit tracks's stealth section both harder and more annoying due to the fact that you need to tap the screen to move, needing you to predict where the guards will go. AND LITERALLY EAFTER EVERY BOSS YOU HAVE TO GET EVEN MORE STEALTH!!!!!!!! the darkness ones are the worst

Hey RabbidLuigi, since you had to play through all those bad stealth sections, you should play a Good game about stealth, ghosts, and other things. It even even has bits of Metroid Prime's eerie charm from time to time. It's called Geist. It's hard, but really good. As of many innovative Nintendo titles, It's a GameCube game. I recommend it.

  • @darklink2nd

My argument for the Uncharted 2 one is that the game (especially on higher difficulty) actually uses a great deal of stealth. You can choose to go balls to the wall with your weapons if you want but you also choose to pick your enemies off one by one as carefully as possible so that if you do get caught you at least have to fight less of them. That and immediately after the stealth part of that segment, the dude pulls an alarm on your ass and all stealth goes out the window. So I think that tutorial level does a good job of teaching you every single aspect of the game: platforming/climbing, stealth and gunplay.

Boat stealth missions Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag. Have you ever tried to hide a bus or a truck colored bright red in plain sight while escaping the police in the dead of night? Well that pretty much sums up what sneaking around with a freaking pirate boat (in this case The Jackdaw) is like. Worst of all NO SEA SHANTIES...just dead silence...and random dialog and shouting.

  • @synthetic240
    @synthetic240 6 лет назад

I would also add the commando missions from strategy games like Warcraft 3 and both Starcraft games, but Command & Conquer games in particular.
At least in the Blizzard games, your hero can fight pretty damn well and you're expected to kill certain baddies, and you often get reinforcements. You're often expected to fight through obstacles until specifically told to sneak around a thing and drop a nuke or reach the objective. They still suck because they hold your hand the whole way.
But in C&C games, you often have a single commando unit that can die in no time (but also has a long range insta-kill shot) and doesn't have much in the way of survivability in the long run. Sure, there's a lot of work being put into designing a base that needs scouting out and infiltrating, but RTS controls and unforgiving difficulty make these sections really clunky.

  • @12yoweaboo

The Wind Waker stealth stage was great in my opinion. You actually HAVE to kill some of the enemies with sticks in order to stop the spotlights. It gives you a sense of accomplishment. After shutting down the four spotlights, you reach the top of the tower and get your sword back and satisfyingly kill a scarier enemy. Then, you are going out of the fortress by a giant bird from the beginning. After a long while in the game, you get to go to the forsaken fortress again. This time, however, you are fully equipped and ready to kill the enemies that you once couldn't. The forsaken fortress was a great stealth stage because of how great you feel after going the second time, being able to kill enemies. the barrel parts, well, don't be impatient...

Everquest 2: Kunark Ascension introduced a Stealth Section that's part of your main quest ..... you get imprisoned and stripped of your gear on a pirate ship, and part of that quest is to get your F-king helmet back from a separate crew member while the rest of your gear is decorated on their captain!

One particularly horrible stealth section in my opinion is The Gorgon's Lair in Destiny's Vault of Glass raid. Eventually the community found ways around some of the issues but with only one of the subclasses of the hunter having a stealth mechanic and the whole party (typically 6) needing to get through, it is a frustrating experience. When party members leave the Raid to rejoin at the next segment, it is telling as to how bad it is.

That 2003 Hulk video game, where the developers thought it would be an absolutely brilliant idea to put the occasional Bruce Banner stealth section IN A FUCKING HULK GAME
It's even better when the justification for one stealth section is that Betty Ross is being held hostage and hulking out will alert everyone to your presence and get her killed...only to hulk out halfway through the level anyway with no consequences.

  • @AnnieGalla

The Temple of the Ocean King from Phantom Hourglass should have been included instead of the forsaken fortress. It's one thing to have a forced stealth section in a game that wasn't built around one, but it is completely different to have a TIMED stealth section (IE two gameplay elements that contradict each other) that you need to repeat at several points throughout the game.
