Gonna talk more about it next episode, feel like I neglected it cuz of all the MMA talk! Been blasting it all week, only thing that has ever scratched my itch for early Malevolent Creation type stuff! Wanna get y’all on the podcast too… hit me up
This is my first time watching Big Riff Energy and I must say, it was a blast. I don't know much about MMA, but it was fascinating listen to you talk about your favorite fighters. And you right about the first Metal Church being an historical event of great significance. Looking forward to the next episode.
Josh Barnett is a huge Bolt Thrower fan, would use them back in the day for his walkout music.I recommend watching the old K1 fights from around the time of the Pride era also.
On swagger, two come to mind. Enslaved. I met those dudes in Dallas and they are the real deal. When they were on they had such a raw, crazy energy. They were maniacs. Like real viking shit, not some Amon Amarth listening midwest white dude cornball nonsense. Second, Rwake. Last time I saw them, which was only a few weeks ago, they were on some different stuff than I had ever seen. One of the best sets I've ever experienced. It would feel wrong to even call it a performance, cause that whole room transcended. Not sure if you'd call it swagger or some kind of divine savagery, but they definitely brought it and everybody knew it.
Rwake swagger is so off the charts it’s scary… felt the same way about seeing US Christmas for the first time. Some Jim Jones, Charles Manson, Pentacostal snake handler type swag!
Once again, an excellent episode of 'Big Riff Energy', Nate. 👍 These podcasts are fast becoming a highlight of the week for me, even when, like this episode, one of the topics were fighters/martial arts, of which I know absolutely nothing, but I still found it interesting and enlightening, due to your way of conveying your enthusiasm. On the topic of 'Swagger', I really like what you said about Tony Iommi; spot on! I really feel 'The Man Black', the late, great Johnny Cash needs to be in the conversation also; to me, like with Tony Iommi, the very epitome of 'swagger'. 😎 Another one was Noel Scott Engel, AKA Scott Walker. He had one of the most grandious voices of the 20th century, and experienced mainstream fame on the level of The Beatles for a short period of time in The Walker Brothers, but rejected all that to create some of the most non-commercial, dense, highly personal experimental solo albums in recorded history. Albums like 'Climate of Hunter', 'Tilt' and 'The Drift' puts him in a category all to him self. 👌
Ya they are my highlight of the week too. After my shit day of construction work every Tuesday I throw it on for the ride home. Makes Tuesday way more tolerable!
Damn Nate, the section you covered about other people's imaginary avatar and comparing yourself to them and their swagger. I needed to hear that, especially today. So thank you just for that. Cheers man!
Sanctuary in Hamtram is the best room in the Motor City…I’ve been watching ufc since the very beginning my friends dad, who also introduced me to Sabbath would get the vhs tapes in the 90s Gracie , Shamrock but Max and Justin’s fight for the bmf belt was the greatest fight I’ve ever seen…legendary everyone who had eyes on that fight erupted those final seconds, a knockout record that can never be broken shoutout to Justin tho man he is one hell of a fighter too…Max And Bones my two fav mma watch out for Tommy Aspinall tho he hits like a ton of bricks(Metal Church) I wanna see him and Jones throw down for sure. Not sure if you have checked it out yet but in mentioning Soilent Green the new Thou album is killerrrr that and inter arma my fav albums this year so far in metal.
Not necessarily metal per se, but I think Neil from Clutch and Matt from The Bronx are both chock full of swagger live. I was lucky enough to win some tickets to a Rollins spoken word show 20 years or so ago, we were a little late arriving in a small seated venue and had to walk right up the front with Henry staring us down the whole way, talk about feeling intimidated.
Peter Dolving from The Haunted had swagger id say. Maybe Nergal from Behemoth Jim Morrisons dad was a admiral in the US navy in WW2, moved around alot but think he had an ok upbringing
Was the Metal Church a Waterloo find? I hope it stays there -- I have a ritual of semi-quarterly Whole Foods runs for stuff that the Bastrop HEB doesn't carry and I go to Waterloo first. I second the I Against I love -- been waiting a long time for the reissue -- my preorder is on it's way and it's out on Friday. An old college bud Dave Gardner has been remastering their albums, and I was worried I Against I wasn't going to happen because SST has been difficult to deal with at times. So a really pleasant surprise just after my b-day!
Agree with Lizzy (twin guitar when they got good) but 'Vagabonds of the Western World' actually has some really cool melodic songs. Think it was their last with Eric Bell as the sole guitar playee, but tell me the title track doesnt have a ripping riff when it finally comes in!!
My all-time favourite fighters are - BJ Penn, YES! Cartwheel era Diego Sanchez, Bas Rutten and Max Holloway 🤘 Also, I don't usually care for drama/gossip but have to admit I was looking forward to you revealing more about why Justin Horval pissed you off recently (I can't stand him!) 😁
There’s no story, we set up a time for an interview and he got scared and backed out. Wasted my time. Turns out a lot of people really hate that guy, including him. Maybe I’ll do a roast session next episode. I honestly forgot he existed
Wouldn't mind more MMA interludes, personally. Love me some MMA, and don't really get any of it outside of watching the fights. UFC 24/7 is my default channel to put on when hangin' out and nothing more interesting's on.
Lemmy had swagger. Mick Jagger has swagger. LaJon Witherspoon, Corey Glover, dUg Pinnick, Jimi Hendrix(R.I.P.), Angelo Moore and Perry Farrell are certified swagger.
I dont think swagger is needed in metal, if the songs are good you are instantly bad azz. Metal singers can be seen as bad azz if the songs are good, thats all :).
Glad you’re digging the new offerings! Thanks for the support big dawg, cheers!

Danzig, Tobias Forge, Al Jurgenson, Corey Taylor, David Vincent, Rob Zombie, Abbath, Ice-T. I think those guys have some swagger to them.
Evil D one of the very few extreme metal musicians with swagger… whether you like him or not.
@@BornTooNate Even his book has swagger
I'm a huge Danzig fan but I don't think he has swagger at all

Awesome, I love the longer episodes. Your passion for MMA is so cool thanks for sharing it with us Nate 🤘

I was just at Waterloo this last weekend. Hopefully they can stick around always love checking them and end of an ear out when I’m in Austin.
Would like to hear more about MMA from you. I'm now off to watch the whole Strikeforce era again.

Waterloo Records is one of the best record stores I have ever been to.
The band Panzerchrist did a cover of Metal Church on their album Roomservice. Soooo heavy 🤘🤘
Hell yeah dude, you're welcome and thanks so much! 🤘

I've seen Eternal Champion a couple times and they have some swagger!
💯

Pick Your King is some baaaaaadass shit, top hc for me as well
Some of the meanest, nastiest stuff ever recorded
I got a fuck ton of swagger and sass for dayz!!

I have swagger as a Metal Vocalist.
Current: Josh Homme, Dave Wyndorf and Pepper.
I forgot Josh! He absolutely has it down to his bones.
Was gonna suggest the QOTSA guys and yeah, Josh most of all, and Pepper too is a great shout!

Dave Brockie. I'm not kidding. Lol
Absolutely valid!
Gwar kicked so much ass in the last 6 or 7 albums before Dave passed. Rip ! Gwar rules
Lucky enough to have seen him live twice before he passed, and dude just gleefully did not give a shit, but in the best way.
@@PriestofGethsemane right on, they are very very fun pits, such a good time
Absolutely! The fist time. (In the 90s) they did their endorsement as RAWG ..naked. lmao
Like DEP, I worship at the altar of 87 Hetfield, but admittedly less swag than black album era. Justice Tripp is the current king of swag.
Lol. Naw.
Lots of metal is menacing and ominous. it's hard to have a bunch of swagger when you are singing about blood and decapitation.
No Lemmy?
