Switching to 32" 4K QD-OLED Monitor from the LG C2 42 OLED TV | Alienware AW3225QF

  • The Alienware AW3225QF is my new favorite OLED monitor to use for both gaming and productivity. Finally replacing the long standing LG OLED TVs (C2 42, CX 48) as my main computer setup display.
    BUT... LG, MSI, ASUS, HP, will also be launching models later this year, which may be better options depending on the features you want.

    I've used the Alienware AW3423DW (the 34" ultrawide 1440p version), LG 45GR95QE, and recently swapped to the LG C3 42". Of all of them, the C3 is my favorite. The issues cited with the 4K 32" in this video are the reasons I sold my previous Alienware, and with the LG 45", it wasn't very bright, had poor pixel density at a 3440x1440, and awful matte coating. The LG 42" C3 however has been perfect in my use case and I feel negligible difference on 120 hz compared to 240 on an OLED. Try them all if possible at a store before deciding on one, I had to learn the hard way.

  • @hugevibez
    @hugevibez 8 месяцев назад +6

    Yeah that was my biggest concern with the 32" as well, the loss of screen real estate. From your review it seems that really is a big loss. I think the golden ticket monitor for productivity is going to be that newly announced Dell 40" ultrawide with a 5120x2160p and 120Hz IPS Black display. The previous gen of these panels that were only available in 16:9 60Hz offered double the native contrast over normal IPS panels and look absolutely fantastic. But then for media consumption these panels (or the new LG competitors to these that also feature better text clarity but also the dual-mode 480Hz stuff, better SDR performance if previous gen TV panels and announced specs are any indication and high refresh BFI) can't be beaten. I think the release of these monitors and the ultrawide is far enough spread that I could justify getting both anyway and just learn to live with a wall of screens. 😅

      I agree. Those 40" ultrawides are my dream displays for productivity. Give me that in OLED and I can be done with all these upgrades. I am considering running a dual screen setup in the meanwhile though I think I'll need a bigger desk. haha

    For me the best productivity size was in the 38" 3840x1600 monitors from a few years ago. The extra 160px height compared to the mainstream resolutions helps a lot and it's a shame they seem to have been abandoned once more. You can also use 100% scaling. In my opinion 4K+ resolutions make no sense if you need to use scaling to see anything.

      Yeah same, I've been trying out this monitor and going back to 16:9 as been really tough. I like the improved text clarity and image quality, but the productivity side of it really takes a hit. Something weird that's also been happening to me, and reported by other people on Reddit, is that this QD-OLED monitor causes eye strain, which again for work staring at this for 8 hours a day at minimum just sucks.
      I'm probably going to return this monitor and wait for a Mini LED UW monitor that is hopefully the right compromise on both ends for me.

    Sure, the LG has better blacks when a lot light reflects off the screen, but it also is way more reflective and acts more like a mirror. I would find those reflections too distracting I think. In my opinion, the coating on the Alienware is a good compromise, because it maintains the image clarity of glossy panels, while cutting down significantly on mirror like reflections. For true blacks, a dark room, or ideally, a pitch black one is needed anyway. I think IPS monitors can also look great during the day in a fairly bright room. It's at night, in a dim environment, where they fall apart, while OLED shows its strength.

      It's trash tbh ... it has a problem with the red color, probably due the stupid coating. Those youtubers talks a bit about that into the reviews but it's way worse than they say, trust me. It may work ok for gaming but for desktop the only usable profile is sRGB. Also their OSD (profile, settings and stuffs) is closed beta stage...
      Wait for different models, aim for a glossy coating not that semi-matte ...

    I sent mine back, too many downsides vs C2. The scratches alone are insane, the coating they use is absolutely horrid, literally cannot clean the display without damaging the coating. The only real upgrade was 240hz vs 120hz and the pixel density, but i hate the curve, no audio out. I actually really like the 42" size at 4 feet viewing distance, I may just wait all the way until 2025 when LG is set to release RGB OLEDs and get a DP 2.1 monitor with an rtx 5090 all in one go.

    Also the scratches on the Dell Alienware are there because it's not a Glass Panel it's plastic. Dell probably put a plastic layer film to make it look glossy and skipping the process of putting glass on it. I suggest to other companies to use Corning Gorilla Glass on their future OLED monitors to help protect the film and therefore creating scratches.

    I'm watching on my LG C2 and the shot at 4:38 had me reaching for my microfiber clothe! I thought my screen was dirty lol. The blacks are so dark it's like I'm working on a black mirror and my tabs are simply floating in the air a mere millimeter in front of that mirror.
    What interesting is your video you made years ago put me into the mindset that smaller OLED high end TV's can also double as good monitors/gaming set ups.

    I can't make the jump down to 32" from 42", the sheer physicality from covering my field of view is too much to do for me. That being said, we need resolution bumps on the 42" to keep it compelling for new buyers

    I only game, and after having the 34” Alienware QD-OLED (Ultrawide 2K) for 1.5 years (wasn’t super impressed with that one), I bought both the LG 42 C3 and the Alienware 32 QD OLED to compare.
    I liked the LG C3 much better. I didn’t like the curve and washed out blacks of the QD OLED, and the 42” size was just more immersive. The Alienware stand is just awful. Also, the LG C3 42 was cheaper because it’s a TV. I sent the Alienware back and kept the LG.

    • @Superdazzu2

    • @meteor1522
      @meteor1522 3 месяца назад

      @@Superdazzu2 first of all , Who said you ‘should’ be using OLED in dark rooms? I’ve had OLED TVs for years prior to buying OLED monitors and used them normally in a standard lit room without issues.
      secondly, like I said, the LG C3 42 is better in every way than the AW3423DW while costing about the same where I live.
      For me, the biggest advantages are: 1) 4K resolution, 2) 16:9 aspect ratio, and 3) deep inky blacks in all room light situations, not just in dark rooms with lights off.
      It’s just a better panel and much more immersive and more enjoyable display.

    To fix the 125% scaling / loss of desktop real estate vs the C2 42" issue - put the AW3225QF on a monitor arm and just bring it a few inches closer. You can always just move a smaller monitor a few inches closer to your eyes to adjust until you get that sweet spot field of view you like. The curve on the AW3225QF actually makes this an ideal monitor for using at a somewhat shorter viewing distance - whether that's using a monitor arm to bring it a few inches closer or just using it on a shallower desk.
    For audio it might be worth getting something like a DX3 Pro+ and running USB audio from the console into that. Then you can connect your PC to the optical or bluetooth inputs for easy input switching for your speaker setup and / or wired headphones (if you have them).

    Bingo! You noticed something I had already noticed since CES 2024 began. The Dell Alienware OLED Monitor has a purple haze when turned off. You call it grey, but it looks purple as compared to Traditional OLED inky blacks. That's because it's not an OLED it's a Quantom Dot OLED monitor. When you combine Quantom Dot with OLED it clearly degrades the monitor making it look cheap. I can already see that Blacks on the QD-OLED Dell monitor will not be True Blacks and only a Traditional OLED will give you True Blacks.

    P/s: spend time digging into user guidance of Fancyzones, probably you hold Ctrl alongside with Shift to allow window snap into more than 1 zones. Then it's not meet my needs. Thanks btw

    i'm thinking about the same upgrade.. currently using an LG C2 42". My main reason to upgrade is SDR brightness, the LG C2 can be a little bit dim during daytime. The QD-OLED is supposed to be brighter on SDR.. ~250-300 nits (i guess depending on the manufacturer and if they use a heatsink or not) which is a little better than the ~150-190 nits of the LG C2.
    I love the colors in QD-OLED but i'm wondering if the LG 32" OLED monitor coming with MLA panel will be even better brighter in SDR content.. I'm used to 500/600 nits of full screen brightness like the apple studio display.
    If the LG reaches 500 nits full screen brightness i think i would prefer it over a QD-OLED that only gets to 250-300 nits.
