  • In this video, I compare the new Alienware 32 4K QD-OLED Gaming Monitor to the 42" LG C2 OLED. The new AW3225QF 240 hz display combines a Gen 3 4K QD-OLED panel with a high 240 hz refresh rate and makes me giddy with color-accurate excitement, but is it better than my LG C2 42”?

    Was your HDR testing with LG C2 using HGIG tone mapping mode or dynamic tone mapping? Dynamic tone mapping artificially brightens darker parts of the image, which could explain why the C2 looked brighter than the Alienware.

    • @Malinkadink
      @Malinkadink 4 месяца назад +3

      Even with HGIG the C2 was brighter for me except for 2% window where my C2 can only get to 700ish nits and the Alienware can hit 1000, for whatever reason at 10% the alienware is like 450 nits while the LG can still hold 700 nits. Couple that with the size difference and the C2 is definitely the brighter one.

    I have the c2 65” and now the AW3225qf too and I agree, the c2 overall brightness is higher than the AW but the the peak 1000 highlights on the AW are much higher than the c2. Despite the AW also being glossy I do think the finish on the c2 is is slightly better and more crisp. I think this may be because the AW is a “semi-gloss” vs a true gloss like the c2. Both screens are beautiful though that’s for sure.

    iam currently rocking a LG C2 42" as my main with the Alienware AW3423DW as a side monitor (long story as to how I came to have this setup) and I have noticed the blue tint to the LG C2 and I have yet to be able to correct it, having the 34" QDOLED next to it really make it stand out more as I have the 34" set to DCI-P3 and the colors are magical and it does suck i cant get the LG to match.

    Excelent comparison. I feel like since you are a photographer you are better suited with every other flat 32" OLED model that comes this year, don't know what Alienware smoke to put a curved display on a 16:9 monitor.
    I agree with the productivity comment on your video, using a 42" you can leave scaling to 100% and have windows on the sides.
    It's remarkable for the LG to be so close since it's 2 years old, I wonder how the 42" C4 would compare.

    Thanks for the great review! Have you noticed any dirty screen effect with your Alienware on very dark gray backgrounds? That's my biggest complaint about my unit at least. Dark grays below 15% are quite dirty looking on mine with lots of noticeable thin, horizontal bands, as well as a few wide vertical bands/areas of darker color. What this results in is a noticeable dirty screen effect in games, movies and pictures that have a lot of these kinds of dark grays. I have noticed a bit in Alan Wake 2 when looking at the sky and in Firefox, when using the dark theme. The biggest offender so far though has been Resident Evil 2 Remake, where these bands are visible not only in the skies, but on some other textures as well, which can be quite distracting and immersion breaking. I bought a second unit to try out and will see if it's any better in this regard. If not, I will have to assume that this is a fairly widespread issue with this panel's manufacturing. In any case, it is also my favorite monitor as well, so I will still keep at least one of them, whichever one is better. Just wish the dark grays were more uniform, as it is otherwise almost perfect in picture quality.

      @Optimus514 5 месяцев назад +8

      Yes, it glows pink/purple/magenta even when the display is off. Horrible. QD OLEDs are dark-room only mastering monitors, not daytime. And that purple glow definitely does impact your perception of colour even when the scene is bright. There is NO WAY that is calibrated to a D65 white point if you measure it full-screen and keep the calibration meter pulled back away from the monitor so it doesn't block ambient light in the immediate vicinity of where the sensor is calibrating. The only way a QD OLED's calibration is even remotely possible to be valid is when the lights are completely off.

    Are both LG and AW3225QF calibrated to a D 65 color temperature ? If you have CALMAN, you should be able to calibrate the LG automatically. It seems like the LG has a cooler color temperatur. If you choose Cinema mode on LGC2, you should be at D65. Also, when you are shooting the comparison, which HDR mode are you on for both devices? if you are playing Dolby Vision content then you have to make sure that both units are calibrated at the D65 in Dolby Vision Cinema mode or Dolby Vision Dark. The alienware red color seems to be orange. It doesn’t really hit the P3 color however looks a lot deeper red and it appears to be more accurate than the Alienware. Do you have DEITP or DE2K?

      @@JohnnyMcPro I find this stuff so confusing and frustrating. I don't know if apple comes stock at d65, when I enable reference mode on my m3 pro and hit d65 it becomes a bit yellower than it was stock. Also what really confuses me is if I go to filmmaker mode with the stock d65 white point on my LG C3, it looks WAY yellower than the macbook d65, it looks like the mexico filter. Which is interesting considering you said you were fighting with it being too blue.
      I ended up going filmmaker mode but with the white point manually set by eye to roughly match my macbook.
      Will getting a colour calibration tool help me with this?
      Also which display profile did you have the LG c2 on in your macbook when you were using it? I switched from the stock profile to 'display p3' as to my eye it matches the macbook much closer.
      And on the qd oled alienware, do you use the stock profile?

I owned a LG C1 for two years and I recently replaced it with a mini-LED TV by TCL. It can do 2500 nits on a 25% window which is almost three times as much as any OLED is currently capable of doing. I just wanted to point out how much of a difference that makes in your viewing experience. Of course some people prefer OLED for the infinite black level and that's perfectly valid. Its a very informative and good comparison between the mainstream small OLED TV and current best 4k OLED monitor in market. In HDR performance, I believe there's not too much real life difference in terms of HDR brightness unless you are rich enough to buy different OLED displays and compare them side to side.
    A little correction from the video @Johny McPro mentioned. First, for LG TV, you can never turn off ABL, what he turned off is actually ASBL, which is dim down when static display detected. Its annoying ASBL cant detect when you typing and it dim down. ABL is depends on overall window percentage in high brightness, the large bright window, the lower highest brightness. The ABL for any OLED TVs are pretty aggressive that its to reserve the shelf life of OLED to prevent burn-in. The OLED monitors, since smaller screen size, the ABL is quite less aggressive than TV (technically)
    Second, about the peak brightness like this Alienware QD-OLED advertised. Its completely a marketing BS because its need a very very tiny high brightness window size to achieve. Fun facts, regardless WOLED or QD-OLED, 10% and above white windows (in testing) are only 500-600 nits. You rarely has any HDR gaming or movie scenes that can dive below 5% bright windows.
    For reason why LG C2 42 is generally "brighter" than Alienware 32 is because the larger bright windows for LG is actually do better than Alienware. It is also due to pixel density. For 32 inch 4k is much denser pixels than 42 inch 4k, a smaller self-lit pixel tend to has lower overall brightness compare to large one. Just simply go to RTings compare the C2/C3 in different sizes, you can see that the larger TV do has higher peak brightness.
    When you choosing between WOLED and QD-OLED, no.1 factor definitely your room condition. If your use case more on day time and pretty bright environment, better choose WOLED. If you purely on gaming at night, in a darker room, then go for QD-OED. For my case, my desk is right beside windows, QD-OLED raised black issue is really huge deal breaker for me. So I rather choose WOLED.

    I just grabbed myself an alienware, and Hdr trueblack is my sweet spot for me. HDRpeak1000 was just not it for me.

    Only use for sound is through and HDMI eArc, terrible decision. Not only did I just spend $1200 for this monitor and they couldn’t have put a 3.5mm audio jack🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
    The C2 blacks still look blacker, that’s crazy

    I think the current 4k oled 240hz monitors should not be sold above $800. It’s just too overpriced for what they could offer.

    A bit more light in the room and the Alienware's black levels and contrast are gone.
