O Canada may be one of the most well known songs that I have never bothered to sit down and listen to. As unfortunate as that may be it does now allow me the unique opportunity of enjoy enjoying it for the very first time. As the national anthem of Canada I know this song as a very special place in the hearts of most Canadian people. It is for that reason that I am very excited to react and listed to O Canada from my American perspective. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

There’s a video worth watching from a few years ago. At a hockey game in Toronto, the microphone broke while the singer was performing the Star-Spangled Banner. Without missing a beat, the Canadian fans in the stands started belting out the American national anthem word-for-word and in perfect pitch to complete the song. It’s commonly said that we Canadians know more about the US than most Americans know about Canada; this may be true. Nonetheless, this is a perfect example of Canadians just being neighbourly. 😊

Thus, the English and French lyrics are very different, and when sung in French, are more passionate (and ironically more religious). The version that you presented performed so beautifully by The Tenors is the one most often heard at major league sporting events or on nationally or internationally broadcast events. It is the bilingual version, containing portions in English and French. Most Canadians are very familiar with this version. The original version was written in French only by Sir Adolphe-Basil Routhier, a French Canadian judge and the music was written by Calixa Lavallée a French Canadian-American who was a Union Army musicain during the Civil War. The English translation is actually not even a translation. It's completely different and has a different meaning than the original French version. The most faithful translation is the one from the parliamentary translation bureau but I have never heard it sung anywhere. At least the French version has the virtue of not having to be gender neutered. The official version has four stanzas but it's been years since I last heard them sung. Back in my RCAC (Royal Canadian Army Cadet) days we would sing the complete version for special event or competitions but that was forty years ago... The music was created by Calixa Lavallée (December 28, 1842 - January 21, 1891) was a French-Canadian-American musician and Union Army band musician during the American Civil War. He is best known for composing the music for "O Canada," which officially became the national anthem of Canada in 1980, after a vote in the Senate and the House of Commons. The same 1980 Act of Parliament also changed some of the English lyrics. A slight alteration to the English lyrics was made again in 2018. The original French lyrics and the music, however, have remained unchanged since 1880.

Ô Canada ! Terre de nos aïeux,

Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,

My parents didn't know much French, much to my frustration, but they said I used to talk in my sleep in French when I was little. Anyway, we learned the French version of O Canada, and sang it in our classrooms until high school, where I think they played it in English over the loudspeaker. It wasn't until then that I realized I only knew the French version lol. Even today (I'm old as dirt), I usually tend to switch from French to English and back rather randomly when singing it.

Almost 75 years old and I still tear up every time I hear our anthem, and always sing along, even if just to myself.

When I think of Canada. I think of a Nation that is above all, a place of refuge for anyone. It doesn't matter who the person is, what their history is. In Canada. Everyone is truly equal. Yes, Canada has a lot of history that reflects on our beautiful nation. But that history is dwarfed by the people of this wonderful land. O Canada translates our love for our beautiful country. When I hear my National Anthem. You bet I feel pride for my country and how thankful I am to be Canadian. Greetings from Manitoba!

This video got me thinking about how at a Maple Leaf's game they had technical difficulties with the mic during the US anthem. The entire stadium, made up of mostly Canadians, joined together to sing the Star Bangled Banner. It was a very proud moment for good sportsmanship and exemplified what being a true Canadian really is.

Fun fact: In Winnipeg, hockey fans will shout the "true north" part of our anthem while our anthem is being sung. It's because after not having the Winnipeg Jets for 15 years, the True North corporation is the group that brought the Winnipeg Jets back to Winnipeg. It's our way of thanking them.

I just finished watching your video about Canadian heros and came accross this video. In Sept 2014 the day Kevin Vickers shot and stopped the terrorist in Parliament all sports events were cancelled. Some of the games in the US sang O Canada even without a Canadian team playing. I still find this so touching.

We do typically sing the bilingual version most of the time. When I was in school we sang God save the Queen and then O Canada.

You know, as much as I'm the first one to call out injustices that need addressing in our country, I don't do that because I hate my country - far from it! I love Canada. I love and am proud to be Canadian! And when you analyzed the lyrics and got to the line "we see thee rise" I got a little choked up. Because that's exactly it - I like to hope and believe that we are a people who rise when we fall, and try to do better. And we don't always get it right, but we generally try! And I see criticism of government and harmful policies not as hating on Canada but rather saying something BECAUSE you love your country and want it to be the best version of itself! I love living here and I want to hold Canada to account on its screw ups as much as I want to celebrate its triumphs and successes. Because I'm proud to be a Canuck and I LOVE what you're doing here. Thanks for taking the time to learn about our country (and showing the utmost respect to our national anthem). I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that you already feel like an honourary Canuck to me and would be welcome here with open arms if you ever do take a trip north. :)

Especially now with the current political mess, Canadians have to stand on guard for our country and rise above the leaders who are trying to keep us down when we should be glorious and free!

When i was a young boy in the sixties, my American aunt and uncle would visit often. My favourite memory of Uncle Cleve, they were sitting around the kitchen table playing cards and completely out of context of anything, Cleve stands up and says "I got something to say. " He proceded to sing O Canada. It was both funny and heartwarming at the same time. He got a laugh for being absurd and did a beautiful rendition of the national anthem. And he was an American. I felt at that time just how close and how similar Americans and Canadians were. I was young then.

Tyler, if you think O Canada is slow check out God Save The Queen, now King. As Canada looks to the British Monarch, as you found out, we sometimes on very formal occasions play the British national anthem. These songs get a lot of play on military parades.

Ever since I graduated I haven't heard O Canada in quite some time (other than Rememberance Day), but man I got a little emotional hearing it again. I really do love our national anthem, and it brings me such joy and pride everytime I hear it. Great video Tyler, I really appreciate an American learning about your northerly neighbour. Keep up the great work!

A lot of people think Canadians don't know the words but that is incorrect. Some sing it in English and some in French. Both are the way to sing it.

    Cheer,
I'm a little guy from Montreal, a French Canadian.
Your videos are really respectful and interesting about our culture.
You should also listen to our national anthem in French and have it translated by google, the lyrics are not perfectly the same, but the two versions are very interesting :)
    Have a good day

Thank you for being respectful of our anthem.
I was on a Canadian base for a Taekwondo competition. Above the crowd was a gym with soldiers working out. They didn’t seem to understand that two anthems were about to play. As soon as they heard the anthem start we heard weights dropped on the floor as they came to attention until both anthems were finished.

Born and raised as a french-canadian in Montreal, Québec, I'll inform you that the anthem was compose by a french-canadian named Calixa-Lavallée. The first version was entirely in french. Through the years, the english part was ''add'' because the english words are not the translation from the french words. And today, it's sang entirely in english in other parts of the country! And by O', it's originaly a way to adress the majesty of something in french.
