I just spent four hours skating last night with a bunch of kids from our church at our local rink. On Sunday morning I had even shown them a part of your video on how to spin as part of an object lesson about how you learn from those who know how to do something better than you. I even put on my skates and skated among the kids as they sat on the floor. I had too much fun. I told them that since I didn't know how to spin, I was going to learn how to spin by watching your training video and practicing. While you are deeply saddened by this great loss I hope it brings you some comfort that your training videos are continuing the legacy that your grandparents began. Skateland now resides in you, and by extension, everyone who increases their skating love and skills by watching your training videos.
Tony, thank you for sharing this with me. You have given me new perspective on this life event. Your heartfelt message truly warms my heart, and I am grateful that my passion and experience can be shared with so many people now worldwide. 🙏🏻😊💜
SO SAD! I wish there was some way that we could all get together and stop this from happening. My heart goes out to you and your family. It's particularly tragic to see rinks disappear just as skating is having a renaissance and gaining so many new fanatics.
It breaks my heart to see this happen. My mom used to go to Skateland all the time when she was a kid and she would take me when I was a kid. I had always hoped that someday if I had kids of my own I'd get to bring them too. For what its worth, I hope you and your family can be proud of all the love and joy Skateland brought to Northridge all these years and of all the memories made here that won't be soon forgotten.
Thanks for this kind message Dex T, I appreciate you reaching out. It has brought so many wonderful memories. Skating builds memories wherever you make them, so let's create more memories finding places to skate without friends and families whether at rinks or outdoors!
I am sorry to hear about you and your family had to sell. I see it was so beautiful rink although I never been there. I saw tons of pictures. At least your rink is being remembered on my site. Skateland IS still alive through my site!
Back in the 70s and 80s California had dozens of roller rinks all over the place with competitive skating clubs. Its so sad that most ended up closing never to return or be replaced. Ive only been to skateland Northridge once, but I still feel for the regulars there. When a skater loses a rink, there are stages you go through: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. No come to think of it there's never acceptance. So sad 😭
Last year while traveling in CA I had the opportunity to visit Northridge for the sole purpose of visiting Skateland and do some skating... I sure wish I had... so sorry to see the latest victim of COVID...RIP Skateland, PS - I can't think of a better use for the building in light of our tragic times.. Kudos!!!
Im sorry to hear abut your rink, its got to be hard. Places are falling like flys here in the UK too, many rinks are barely profitable at the best of times and the forced closing has left so many in a situation that only ever had one outcome. Even a venue i go to which rents a sports hall for several sessions a week is on the brink of collapse. This pandemic has left the worst of people financially better off and so many good people in ruin.
:( My local rink closed around the same time last year on the other side of the country. It really was devastating after going for so many years. I cannot imagine losing a family owned rink
@@marcodamanlius Roll On America in Lancaster Massachusetts. We went from 13 rinks in my state down to 7 but the closest one to me is gone. Now I drive an hour away to skate at RollerKingdom
The saddest part is that you could've ran your rink and a lower capacity and you would've been fine if the state of California would just let businesses re-open. This is due to the government using the pandemic to play politics - not because they care about anyone's safety. What the hell happened to this country? Our entrepreneurship is what the USA thrived on. I'm so sorry you had to lose you rink simply due to greed. I can't imagine what this is like for you especially being that your rink has been in your family for so long. It must be like losing a loved one.
Sorry to hear about the closing, Why is it assumed that the viewers knows where this Skateland was located, i.e. state, city etc.? Could be the seed for a future purchase.
The rink is located in Northridge, California, but has been sold to Hope of the Valley, it will become a bridge homeless shelter by next month. After being closed 10 months with no offers there was no other option.
Yeah this is Kurt I used to be security over there at Dale's Junior store back in 1988 when it was me and Danny there and it's a shame because it brought back some old memories I used to go roller skating back when I was just teenager that's a shame. Good old days are gone now.

Definitely a hole in my heart having lost my second home! And the life I previously lead teaching, performing, etc. where do you skate now?
