I live in a small neighborhood of only 113 homes. There are about 15 known preppers in our community (myself & some friends) along with 3 law-enforcement officers, and several servicemembers. Over the years my buddies and I have managed to secure all of the spots in the HOA. We are slowly turning our small community into a Gray-berhood haha. In order to get a budget approval for a community upgrade, we need 10% of the homeowners to vote in favor. We have those votes just amongst us, but we get well over 50% when we put our ideas to a vote. We don't describe it as prepping, or anything of the sort. We pitch it as good for neighborhood value.
Over the years we have managed to put in a large covered pavilion with picnic tables & campground-style standing charcoal grills (perfect for a meeting place & for food distribution), a playground & dog park next to said pavilion, a 3 acre "community garden" at the center of the neighborhood that a few of us families currently work, but could be used to produce at least some of the food needed for the neighborhood, a sand-point well at the pavilion, the community garden, the entrance to the neighborhood (Behind the brick "welcome to" sign), and the back of the neighborhood, and right now we are working on getting quotes for gating the neighborhoods one vehicle entry/exit point. Heck, we have even approved "animals of a barnyard nature", against the complaints of more than a few. That was the most contentious vote of them all haha. We finally secured it by explaining its meant for people to have chickens, rabbits, & maybe a goat.
Most of our neighbors have no idea that these improvements aren't just meant to raise their property values haha. Hopefully they never have to thank us for our forward thinking on their behalf!

I think a lot of us dress to be the “hard target”. Clean, put together, strong probability we are armed and can defend ourselves.
Grey man is the exact opposite mindset. I think about this often.

A couple years ago I went to NYC for the first time to see the 911 memorial. At the time I didn't know they had such strict gun laws. I'm from Pennsylvania, I was concealed carrying. I had on jeans, regular shoes, but. I had a shirt on that said "security and military depot" (A local gun shop in PA) it wasn't even in big letters. A gentleman came up to me and said "Do you have a gun?" Me, confused on why he asked me that, said "Yes?" (Which I probably shouldn't have said, but) He said "Dude, you can't carry a gun here, they'll lock you up. I noticed your shirt that's why I came over to you" He was from Kentucky. Maybe that's why he noticed and others didn't but let's just say I thanked him and got out of there quick. Never shared that story with anyone, but thought it fit well with this video!

I am a ride share driver in a medium-small city in NC of about 70k people. Gray man is my ultimate goal at all times. I even bought my car with that in mind. I have a black Toyota Camry. I don't have any stickers or decals just so my car doesn't stand out in any way. The fact that I carry strangers has made me be creative and thoughtful in how I approach my preps and EDC. I set my car up so the driver side door is locked at all times until I open it. I carry concealed with a magnetic holster beside my leg. I have a knife in my flip-down sunglass holder. I wear plain colored shirts & jeans that I get at wal-mart because most of the people around here shop there too. I wear a plain ballcap when I work also. I have set up a larger than average rearview mirror that allows me to see more of the back seat & have a low-profile dash cam in the front & back of the car.
The tricky part was how to travel with my get-home bag & my carbine. After some experimentation, I was able to build a false wall into the trunk of my car behind the seats. Some plywood, a couple hinges, some automotive carpet, and a bit of velcro, and I made a handy little hiding spot for my bag and carbine (I chose carbine because it is compatible with my handgun mags). The bag isnt huge, (just some energy bars, a change of clothes, hoodie, couple bottles of water, small first aid kit, ammo, flashlight, and fire starter) but it is plenty for a walk home. Fortunately, since its a car, I can keep maps and what not without raising flags.
I honestly recommend ridesharing on the weekends or just occasionally for preppers. I now know my city so well I could come up with several routes from any point in town to any other point in town haha. I also now know where the bad parts of town are. I know where resources are. I know where abandoned buildings are that could make good temporary shelter. I know where the owners of several restaurants & businesses live too. The job has also forced me to be able to talk to ANYONE.

Beige, light brown, Olive clothes, mixed, are the best all-around camouflage. Olive pants, beige print shirt, when still, in shadow, is not noticed by peripheral vision until movement. It's time for preppers to do chores in discrete tactical convoys however small.

There's one thing that I find is often overlooked in these gray man videos, and it is something that most of these tips won't help minimize: that is being a different racial/ethnic/(and sometimes) religion in an area where you always stand out, even an area you're familiar with/live in. Some people are always going to stand out, which is why acting like you belong becomes one of the most important tools.

If you have large cardboard boxes, here are a couple of uses:
    1. Fill with garden soild and compost. Wrap with chicken wire. Now you have a non-plastic planter that won't emit pcbs into your soil when you grow food. If you want make it look nicer, it can be covered with jute cloth.
    2. Break the box apart and spread out flat. Place under your car in your garage to catch the oul spills.

I do not stand out where I live. I never wear black, because it is too hot to work in. Light colors are best. For our short winters, I have a gray insulated jacket. Where I live is almost center between 3 small towns in a rural county in SC. But even in the rural areas there are small communities like there are 1-3-5 acre lots all around me. These smaller communities will most likely cut off or barricade the entrances from outside traffic in a true SHTF scenario. So it’s NOT just the towns someone has to be conscious of it’s all the smaller outlying communities as well.

Doesn't look odd to have a big bag even with a purse and nobody looks twice at it. My son is 11 so obviously not for him but like you said, people make assumptions and usually just assume dad must have the baby near by. Bonus to this bag, lots of room and nifty pockets. Usually that happens when someone didn't get to witness (and thus learn) emotional regulation as a kid. I.e. parents who weren't around or parents who were around in toxic ways of their own, even if they meant well can be the start of the this. Not saying that in a shitty way by any means. I'm commenting because I hear a lot of ppl bemoan being that way, and it's the first part of your statement that indicates to me that you're someone who values good things but has a limit for what he will take, and what happens after that limit is scary even to you.
Good people who tried hard as kids to do the right thing and didn't get seen or rewarded for it in any capacity, while having to fend for themselves in unfair ways is a big thing that sets us up to feel/be like that too.
I can speak from some experience on this, having to learn a bunch of things in adulthood that I never learned as a kid. What helped me the most was beginning to understand the separation of mind, body and emotion. I used to be unable to distinguish between what I thought and what I was feeling, and that's the recipe for snapping at people, because it feels like it's out of your control. Meditation is crucial, even if it's just a few minutes a day of stillness.
But we're all essentially wandering around like appliances that are missing an instruction manual, lol, just doing our best, and learning these things by feel or by wise experience and counseling from others are the only real options we have 🤷‍♀️

Howdy from TX. LA Police gear has some nice pants that look average from a little distance. They are clearly cargo pants, but they are way more heavy-duty than other cargo pants I've found. Perfect for edc of pistol, flashlight, knife, etc. I like having a .22 in my vehicle just for the amount of ammo I can keep on me in it. It's too easy to throw 500 to 1000 rounds in the 72 hr bag. Just keep it oiled up and in a sleeve in the vehicle and it will be fine. I feel safe enough to do that though where I'm at, and some people might not want to leave a firearm like that in their vehicle.

I get the idea of blending in, but that's just not my style. I've tried, with the dress "code" I guess, but yeah, that's not for me. Regarding tactical bags, in my context, at least, it's actually kind of normal to see people wearing one (there's a military base in my city). Could I be wrong about this? Sure. Again, I'm on the fence. Just my thoughts and opinions.

Does facial hair figure into he gray man concept? Is there a cumulative effect, when factors work against you (i.e. being super tall, facial hair, hat with logo, car with bumper stickers)?

Eddie Bauer makes a really great EDC pack called the Adventurer. I have the 29L and it is configured perfect and does not look tactical at all. And everyone just thinks your an old guy that shops Eddie Bauer.

I think if or during an emergency, it will matter so much what you are wearing because people will be in a panic and trying to do their own thing.
People always say don't wear camo or a camo bag. Camo is common and unless you're wearing a clown suit, people won't notice you so much. If you spend time somewhere it's no big deal to grab some clothing and look like most other people.
Now are you trying to look poor and unimportant? Maybe you need to look wealthy? Are we all going to pack a bag of disguises? Wearing a hoodie and buying the "grey man" bag might make you stand out more than others.
Wearing grey or brown, whatever and carrying a backpack might or might not grab somebodies' attention that you are a prepper, but other preppers and people who have "bug out bags" are not looking to steal from you. They'll be busy doing their thing.
If people are desperate and there are bad guys around then you might be attacked or robbed just because you are there without regard for how you dress or what you are carrying.

You THINK you don't stand out. But from what you described you would stand out like sore thumb around here. Because you arent blending in, you are standing out because of your reclusiveness.

The standard when dealing with trash.
IT MUST FIT IN THE CONTAINER.
That means the lid must shut.
I pay for two 50 gallon trash receptacles.
Boxes must be torn down or cut up.
Toys or household appliances too large to fit must be disassembled (partially) or cut up.
Nasty food and other trash (diapers etc) have first priority for disposal, any left over room is for boxes, appliances, toys etc.
And if you live in an area of nosy people, go the extra step and bag EVERYTHING.
It may take a construction weight bag for appliances and things.
But it's your privacy at stake, you have to decide what effort is worth it.

No confrontations when you're driving can be bad I live in Austin Texas and they got a lot of road rage drivers here and you really if you carry a firearm stay away from that let the people go by you drive slower
