most horrific image for me was when Hutter opens his castle door and finally sees Orlock in full vampire form staring at him from across the darkened room. That must have scared the shit out of folks back in 1922
Man, It's been SO MANY YEARS since I last checked your channel; and I'm so happy I remembered to do so, you're still as awesome as always. Great stuff, look forward to the month ahead! I hope rosie and yourself are as good as always :) All the best from the UK!
@@cheloniadaycare8872 Yes, that is indeed a movie that is happening starring that wonderful actor - and directed by Robert Eggers who is one of my favorite current horror auteur directors. Looking forward to it.
As a Hungarian myself, it was funny to hear you try to pronounce "halála" :) It's such a shame that that movie was lost though. Still, maybe one day they'll find a copy buried somewhere or something lol.
Lol! Hope my verbal mangling of it didn't make you cringe TOO badly! ;) Well, long lost films have mysteriously re-appeared before (1910 Frankenstein, additional footage for Metropolis, etc.), so who knows!
I think one of the things that hacked off Florence Stoker was that Murneau hadn't even contacted her to enquire about rights - that and the money, obviously. But I suspect she may also have been unhappy when she heard that the film concentrated on the more mystical aspects of the legend - eg the virgin/sun stuff. The book is actually very, very grounded in reality - other than the minor detail of the Count being a Vampire obviously. So there is loads of stuff about blood transfusion, mechanical reproduction of the human voice, psychology and even typewriters all sitting there. That's one reason it's such a dense read (and why Lit Crit types love the thing). And far from obeying some ancient legend in his demise Stoker's Dracula is offed by a prosaic Bowie knife to the heart. Where the film does follow the novel is in making Drac/Orlok extremely physically unattractive yet hypnotic.
Ellen was the heroine of the film. The first death of a vampire, and by a woman. It's such a shame that Florence Stoker was too busy litigating to appreciate that. ~Steven of Montreal
Love your review. I personally love this film. And loved the ending. Was pretty tragic, but the vampire was destroyed in the end and it made a pretty good ending. I also think Orlok and Salem's Lot's Barlow were the scariest vampires in movie history.
The Master from _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_ TV series was also visually based on Orlok. And a minor character in the _Angel_ episode "Why We Fight," named the Prince of Lies.
Everyone has AIDS! AIDS AIDS AIDS! I know aids isnt a joke it affected a lot of people and still does now and its tragic but damn team america for programming my brain this way
I saw Nosferotu at my sister's house one Halloween. I've never seen this movie before until I went to my sister's. I remember that iconic shot from that movie where he's sucking that person's blood. Great review as always.
I admire how you're able to do so many videos in such a short space of time, and still make them good. It's really incredible. Also, are you planning on doing the same string of movie reviews this October? I would love to see you do a review on Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). You've talked about it before, but to give your full opinion would be excellent.
So, I found this comparison page, and it claims that both the Kino and Masters of Cinema versions are the same running time and both at 18 fps. Not sure if they are comparing the english or german version from the Kino. There doesn't seem to be an issue with the Kino, just that MoC may be slightly superior. www.dvdbeaver.com/film5/blu-ray_reviews_69/nosferatu_blu-ray.htm
I greatly encourage you to check out David J. Skal's phenomenal book Hollywood Gothic: The Tangled Web of Dracula from Novel to Stage to Screen. It is THE best book on Dracula out there. I went to a signing of his new book (Something in the Blood: The Untold Story of Bram Stoker) last Halloween and he is definitely the world's foremost authority on the subject. Hollywood Gothic would prove a fun Halloween read.
Silent films were shot and projected at 16fps, whereas modern sound films are shot and projected at 24fps. This is why silent films make everybody look like they're running around on crack, because they're being shown at 150% of their normal running speed!!!
I don't know that there's much to be afraid of anymore, especially if you only show short clips, and when RUclips holds all revenue during disputes. In my friend and I's movie podcast, we didn't get hit with a single match even after showing clips and B roll of Scott Pilgrim. And though our Graduate episode got blocked worldwide, the only thing that matched was the entirety of the moving sidewalk scene as b roll. After disputing, it was reinstated. ruclips.net/video/DDzk1dLyaH8/видео.html
Yeah, still not risking it. Ad rev is deep enough in the toilet as it is these days without risking losing even more dealing with disputes and other B.S. I just want to make videos, not have to fight for the right to show the content of them constantly.
Because the Halloween movies were never meant to be solely about Michael Myers, it was intended to be an anthology series. They did the second one as a continuation of the first solely because the first was so successful, the studio wanted another one along the same lines. With the third, they went back to the original anthology idea and did a standalone film. Then the fans got all cheesed off because it wasn't about Michael Myers, so the studio gave them what they thought they wanted by giving us a string of increasingly shitty sequels instead of what could have been an interesting and creative anthology-style horror series with the Halloween season being the only connection. I love the third one, I think it's one of the best films of the series and shows what might have been. I talked about all this quite a bit in my Halloween series reviews last year.
You barely read the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker? I guess I am old (43) and that was a book required for reading in my Language Arts/English class when I was a Freshman in High School. I own 3 different versions of it...paperback, Hardback and Abridged. My 18 and 17 year old daughters have also read it! It is one of the best NOVELS I have ever read! If you haven't yet, check out the movie Lair of the White Worm...also based on a Bram Stoker story of the same name. And Nosferatu is probably the scariest version of "Dracula" I have ever seen. My kids are terrified by the movie.
I would like to see Der Januskoph (The head of Janus) by Murnau the most from all of his lost films. From surviving-Nosferatu is the winner without doubts.
Technically, NOSFERATU is the first Dracula film, because DRACULA'S DEATH is just a guy, a music teacher I believe, in an insane asylum that thinks he's Dracula!!!
