This breaks my heart every time I hear it because I had a Dad who sacrificed EVERYTHING for his children. He sired 18 of us and gave us all the love and attention one man could possibly give to so many. Not only did he have time for all of us, he also played the Dad to neighborhood kids who didn't have one themselves, he always included them in our outings. I will never know Kelly's kind of pain but I do know the pain of losing a Dad since mine passed in 2000.

It wasn't easy for him trying to step into that role, but he did it and now they love him more than their actual dad, because he's always there for them in so many ways that their biological dad isn't. That song was like a call to our culture to do better. For families to be families. For men to be fathers. It's just... a really good song. Even though I have a dad this song makes me emotional... he's not exactly the greatest role model in some ways, he's very pessimistic and controlling and has given me a lot of emotional baggage. But he never abandoned me, he's always made supper for us, and even taught me how to read and write and do math... I'm luckier than a lot of people.

Yep this song gets me every time. For me he left when I was 5 and he never came back. He lived less than an hour away but had no desire to see me. Still hurts knowing that. But my mom was awesome and did the best she could.
This song ALWAYS brings me to tears. When I was 12, my mom and my dad got a divorce and I saw my dad for probably the first 3 years after it, and then my dad just went ghost on me. He stopped returning calls, letters, stopped visiting me, etc. I was hurt, confused and lost, and then my step dad came into the picture. While he and I haven't had the best relationship, i will always be grateful for him coming into our lives and for him doing all he could to be a father figure to me. Yes it does hurt. My father did that to me when I was 5 and then told me he wanted nothing to do with me when I was 14. But I was raised by 2 strong women. My mom and my granny who taught me my self worth and I didn't need a father or a man to make something of myself. Don't get me wrong. I have a husband of 33 yrs and a 25 yr old son. That song was like a call to our culture to do better. For families to be families. For men to be fathers. It's just... a really good song. Even though I have a dad this song makes me emotional... he's not exactly the greatest role model in some ways, he's very pessimistic and controlling and has given me a lot of emotional baggage. But he never abandoned me, he's always made supper for us, and even taught me how to read and write and do math... I'm luckier than a lot of people.

Yep this song gets me every time. For me he left when I was 5 and he never came back. He lived less than an hour away but had no desire to see me. Still hurts knowing that. But my mom was awesome and did the best she could.

This song ALWAYS brings me to tears. When I was 12, my mom and my dad got a divorce and I saw my dad for probably the first 3 years after it, and then my dad just went ghost on me. He stopped returning calls, letters, stopped visiting me, etc. I was hurt, confused and lost, and then my step dad came into the picture. While he and I haven't had the best relationship, i will always be grateful for him coming into our lives and for him doing all he could to be a father figure to me. I STILL haven't seen or heard from him even though I'm an adult and don't want/need anything from him

Yes it does hurt. My father did that to me when I was 5 and then told me he wanted nothing to do with me when I was 14. But I was raised by 2 strong women. My mom and my granny who taught me my self worth and I didn't need a father or a man to make something of myself. Don't get me wrong. I have a husband of 33 yrs and a 25 yr old son. But I am who I am bc of the man who told me I wasn't good enough. I spent my life showing him I was good enough.
