She was referring to her father in the song and the new man that she referred to in the song was her husband. They are now as of like a year ago I think divorced because he was a no good SOB, but she is healthier than ever and continues to sing like the angel she is. she has a fantastic catalog of music that you should deep dive into.

He ended up screwing her over too for as much as 24 mill and she just had to take him back to court to get back money. Kelly is one of the GREATEST artists of our time she can LITERALLY SING ANYTHING check out her KELLYOAKES from her talk shows. One of the best people in Hollywood and been screwed over every step of the way BUT HAS FOUGHT FOR HERSELF EVERY STEP OF THE WAY!!! I'm so glad she has Reba to lean on at least ❤

You should also find her videos singing w/Pink. 2 under-appreciated powerhouses that hit in an indescribable way.

My father left when I was 4. Never cared to visit or care. I intended an olive branch to him for my wedding when I was 26. It was always my job to schedule things. Now, I am 44 and he stopped caring and we haven't spoken in 2 years. They really can burn holes in you and discard you like nothing.

The "you" in the song ("All I remember is your back") is referring to her dad, who left when she was six. Before Idol, she flew out to visit him and tried to rekindle a relationship, but he wasn't interested. Post Idol, which she won, he comes back...asking for money. The "he" in the song ("Piece by piece he collected me up off the ground where you abandon things") referred to her (now ex) husband. Who sadly, pulled her dad, divorced her, wiped out half of her money, blah blah. She has since changed the lyrics to this song. "I just walk away, when they ask for money." She also wrote another song that references it, and one of the lyrics is "Piece by piece, I found out my hero is me."

I first saw this back in 2016, and it still makes me cry when I watch it now...and I have a wonderful father. But man, it hits you right in the feels.
Her newest Album 'Chemistry', came out last June and covers the Arc of her relationship with her ex husband. A great Album, and of course Kelly always brings the feelings and emotions into her songs. Such an incredible singer, songwriter and human.

I love music so much. You can feel all the heartache of her childhood as if you were there. She has a rare gift, a beautiful smile and talent, not just as a musician but as an all around entertainer. I try not to get stuck in my favorites, because there is so much new talent that I will miss if I do. I am glad I didn't miss this one.

The sonic gets me the time. My dad didn’t abandon me. He actually help me from my mother back in the 60s long story. No one needs to know, but this song hits Home because he took me just despite my mom and he never gave me the love of father gives his daughter that I’ve seen in so many of my friends, etc. he told me way too many times I was not the Daughter he wanted and why can I be like the girls that I grew up with or even my cousin just always degrading and anytime he did something and he would say he was proud of me it just laid flat with me along with my stepmom abusive and I sit back and I wonder what did I do and why couldn’t I get the love unfortunately at 64 years old I still wonder I try to move on the problem having a father like that appear like that as much as you wanna break the mold wind up with that and I’ve had so many good men that I dated in the past but for some reason I didn’t stay I guess cause I didn’t know what true love was so I wind up with that wolf and sheep clothing.. but I try to stay strong for myself and my daughter, who is so much stronger than me even though her father and I are divorced. I made her your brother saw him all the time and had the relationship with him that they should and she’s her father’s world, God bless all the daughters❤❤

This song could apply in the case of a really good stepfather. At first, that's what I thought the story of the song was about.
My daughter danced with her Stepfather to this song. They saw it as him picking up the pieces after her POS sperm donor basically abandoned her. The last part of the song, she wanted me to dance with her because she felt that was who was and always be by her side no matter what.
