Join Cody as he explores this civilization building game set in the ancient Mediterranean from GMT Games. Will it stand the test of time on your game shelf? "I didn't have a good experience with Hitler's Reich." Not many people did…
I've heard that the rules update made it a good game. We'll see.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I think spacesergeant101 was talking about history - not the game...
@@jackdancer7448 You might be right.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer It is a fun game but a lot off "look at this example here THAT'S HOW IT WORKS". Like if it was proof read by the writer.
I was going to buy Ancient Civilisations.. but now I might wait for rules updates?
Picked this up and played it last night. We had a 4 player game and had a great time. One of those games that make me want to play it asap after I just played it.
Right? Fun game.
Great job. Thanks for finally reviewing this game. I hope 'Imperial Struggle' is next.
Thanks. I 'm looking forward to Imperial Struggle. Hopefully soon.
Thanks for the review. Looks good for the right group.
Indeed. Thanks.
A friend and I have been really curious about this game. Thanks for the review!
You're welcome.
So glad to see you review this one!
Happy to help!
Clean shaven Again! Oh there you are, Peter! I thought perhaps evil Cody was starting to....grow?....on you.
It's all too easy to fall under his influence. We must remain ever vigilant.
Great review! :) :) How does this compare to time of crisis?
Very different games. Not really comparable in my opinion.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Oh really? THats quite surprising as both are deck builders with a similar theme...
@@chadvader974 This game is not really a deck builder.
The disks used for many things is a bit of a holdover to the old Civilization from Avalon Hill. Balancing your disks for growth and powers is a delicate act.
Indeed. Thanks.
regarding the frequent card shuffling the first thing we changed when playing was to cancel the shuffle until the start of a new epoch. The deck is too large and adding those cards back in is too minor to shuffle the deck so often
Not bad.
I would think especially in a 6 player game that there'd always be Somebody sitting around doing nothing who could shuffle the deck
I just came here to say. Successors Cody ;)
It looks good, for sure.
I am probably late on this but in regards to the game being long you can shorten the game by setting a time limit or playing to a certain amount of victory points etc..
The scenarios allow for shorting playing time.
This is definitely going on my list. Unfortunately, I still have other games to get first. Not that I have a strict list whose order I must obey, just it might take a few months to prioritize it.
I hear you. I understand that mentality perfectly.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I increasingly find that GMT publishes the sorts of games I like most.
@@femmedracula They are a great company that makes great games.
When is “Undaunted Normandy” coming? Its the kind of game i think u might like!
I'm working on it.
1:00 I bet the people the Spy is snooping on don't think he's such a "great person".
That's just because they don't know him yet.
Hey, did you hear about Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East? I think it's up for P500 at GMT now.
I hadn't heard about that one. I'll have to check it out.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Yeah, I think it just went up for preorder/P500 in the past week. I guess the response to this game was fairly positive. :)
@@femmedracula Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East is in art and final development stage. As of October 12, 2020, it has 625 orders. If anybody wants the game at a discount ($63.00 vs. $90.00 regular price) preorder it at www.gmtgames.com/p-836-ancient-civilizations-of-the-middle-east.aspx
@@ralmcg Ooh thank you!
@@femmedracula You're welcome. Hopefully others will order it, if just to get it produced and delivered faster.
been debating on getting rid of this one, seems like people either like it or hate it.
I can understand why it's so polarizing. It's not what you'd expect. I really like it.
Can anyone tell me if this game's solo mode plays well? 🙂
I haven't tried, but I've heard good things.
did one play solo (and one multi) so far. So have a lot of different ways to play solo: historical scenarios, sandbox games, exploration games... I did one of the historical one, you start with your roman empire at his top and try to resist some invasions from Persians (on the Eastern part) and Visigoths (on the Western part).
this 1st game was just to learn how the AI is going to act and react to situations, and how they will place theirs disks, play theirs cards, spend their talents...
So in my really short experiment, it was fun to play, using sometimes the "what would I do" instead of losing too much time in the charts, and I will try it again for sure
@@denissauzedde8057 Thanks for that!
Sounds promising! 🙂
Lol Cody, I love the "dad" jokes. Good review! How does this compare to Mare Nostrum Empires for you?
And I'm not even a dad. I'd have to play this one some more to answer that question. Potentially ACIS could kill it. We'll see.
Mare Nostrum Allies is much much better.
Thanks for the review, but you have a wrong point. Talents in your treasury don't come from your supply, but are white disks. You have 48 disks to expand (50 -2 for turn order and VP)
That’s also incorrect. You have 52 disks. 2 get used for VP track and turn order. So you have 50 to expand with.
@@colinalec nope, 2 from each color are for spare parts
I ditched this one after one play. I found the "take that" card play not a great mix for a long game like this. The shuffling also was ridiculous. That seems to be a universal opinion.
Yeah, shuffling is a bit much. Still, I rather enjoyed the "take that" aspect of the game.
So scared you were going to say this game sucks... whew!
Ha! It's all a devious game of misdirection!
~ you sure 'nose how to make this game look like it 'snot' another Hitler's Reich... so I bought it! Thanks again Cody!
Happy to help!
Nobody had a good experience with Hitler's Reich :-D
Björn Franke Indeed.
Don’t be afraid to try shorter games with less epochs.
Yeah. That's definitely an option.
Comparisons to here I stand and Virgin queen?
It's been a very long time since I've played HIS, but this strikes me as a very different game.
Incomparable. This is a very lightweight, random civ game.
Cody... This game really sounds like Mare Nostrum by Academy games... without the high production quality, and the cool add ons (camels, temples). I can see where a big group game would be fun... lots of chatter and razing. Being mostly a solo player and with a desire to have a little more pinache instead of hum drum wooden markers... I don't think this would be on my BUY list.
There are a lot of similarities to Mare Nostrum, for sure. This game is not for everybody, however. I really got a kick out of it.
Mare Nostrum is a game where you have to work on maintening a balance of power between players. I have the feeling that you might not win only by yourself but because of someone else's mistake!
ACIS is much lighter than this and you cannot go for a long term strategy, or at least it's very hard to stick with one.
and Mare Nostrum doesn't play solo
