Here's what I appreciate most about you, MrBallen: You convey human stories with empathy, and respect for the people involved. You're not the typical greedy-eyed, money-grubbing sociopath with a serious case of terminal schadenfreude. You honor these people's stories. Thank you.

Yeah some come off as sadistic when they tell these stories. Even the news has a way of reporting these things with fake empathy but he genuinely talks about it like he knew the people involved personally.

      I' m a little confused right now....
I knew, that a few german words (like Kindergarten for example) are adapted in the english language. But "Schadenfreude"? Really?
I'm seriously asking if there's no word in english for it?
And - by the way- what does it tell about us germans (scratch my head)
Bc. "Schadenfreude" is the worst type of joy someone could have..🙄

    • @jeffstreck
      @jeffstreck 2 года назад +259

@@peshadowbird7320 I used the German because there's really nothing similar in English. I'm not particularly well-read or anything, I learned the word from Avenue Q. I think sometimes, schadenfreude has a place, even a healing quality. When appropriate, of course.

Nice job. Jennifer was a dear friend of mine. Our kids went to school together and we sat on a board of directors together for a number of years. Jennifer had the biggest heart, the brightest smile and she touched the hearts of everyone she met. Her loss was very hard on our community here in Albuquerque. Thank you for sharing both her and Hollie's stories. An interesting piece of information that also gets overlooked is that because Jennifer's seatbelt held her in place it potentially saved the life of the middle passenger as well as allowed Jennifer's family to lay her body to rest and say goodbye.

This whole story is comforting to me, not to be morbid. I’m a loyal Southwest Airlines customer, but Final Destination scarred me for life before I ever flew anywhere.
What I read about this incident gave me the impression the window cracked and broke and flew inward, cutting Jennifer who tragically died of blood loss.
I don’t understand the physics of vacuums, apparently.
I’ve been on many flights where the acrylic window panels have cracks that appear to worsen or even make a loud crack sound in flight.
Luckily I’ve never been on a flight that had an engine blow out, and i am glad that’s what it took to really break a window.
I hope I don’t sound completely horrible for saying this. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I’ve always been an aisle sitter at the front of the plane. It’s due to the of ease of deplaning, but now It seems like an extra good idea.
Southwest is still my go to for their pretty stellar safety record even though I feel sorry for what happened to Jennifer.

I witnessed a motorcycle accident one day, it was weird because I was getting held up by my buddy that day, and left his place, and went back to where he was minutes later because he needed jumpstarted, then finally went on my way and I took a different route than I normally do, because the light turned red 🤷🏼‍♂️ so I just went right, and I'm driving up the road when all the sudden there's a biker, and a car in the middle lane, racing, and the biker looks over, loses grip and speed-wobbles making his bike hit the curb, and he literally flew head first into a telephone pole... Right in front of me. It was in front of our local hospital (even more ironic) and a nurse ran up, right after me, telling me to hold his head, and so I'm looking in his eyes, and it's just blank, but his pupils are still dilated to the light, so I just started telling him I was there and he was gonna be good. He lived just long enough that night for his mom to call him and say goodbye to him. I'm still friends with his mom. It still really messes me up. Sometimes all you can do is love.

I remember this even so vividly, like it was just yesterday.
I was traveling to visit family in PA for comfort after the passing of my sweet pup of 14yrs, when on my drive to the Philadelphia airport, to catch my return flight, I ended up stuck in traffic. Well, this was an eery situation since I was on track to arrive with ample time to stroll through the check-in and make it to my gate. As I was on the highway I noticed an intense tie up of traffic, figured something was occurring on the roadway. As I proceeded to take the next exit law enforcement has instructed all vehicles traveling that stretch of highway to take I heard a loud sound coming from the sky. As I looked up I could see the plane coming down. It seemed about right they had to clear the highway just in case the plane did not make the runway. Thankfully it did make the runway, although it wasn’t until shortly thereafter that I overheard people discussing how a lady was sucked out of the plane while in flight. Of course trying to catch more details of this event, specifically about the passenger, were a challenge as most news channels did not seem to cover beyond the general occurrence itself.
Looking back I still feel a sense of sadness that was felt throughout that air that day. Oh I pray Jennifer is resting in peace. 🙏🏼♥️

This story is an odd mix of wholesome and tragic at the same time. There's something to be said about this plane full of people just being absolutely silent while they tried to bring Jennifer back. Something about a tragedy in your midst snaps you into the present and makes you take stock of what is truly important.

It's like the story of United 93, where the passengers called their loved ones to say goodbye and then actively fought against the plane hijackers.

@@McSnezzly Is that the plane that crashed into the field in Pennsylvania? If it was those people went down heroes. I hope they knew that before it ended.

Aah this one hit hard. There was a terrible accident outside my flat a few days ago. It was almost awful enough to be on a episode of this. A lady died, with my hand on her back comforting her. When I saw the hand on the back in the video, it brought it all back. I'm trying to forget what I saw. I doubt I ever will. It's easy listening to these stories but when something happens in your own 'bubble' it's a different kettle of fish. It comes to something when your watching MrB to cheer you up! He does. 🙂🙏

Thank you to Mr Ballen for being very caring and compassionate telling this story.
This had to be extremely traumatic especially for Holly and also the girl in the middle seat.
Thanks to the cabin crew, the flight attendants, the men who bravely pulled Jennifer out of the window while risking their own lives and the nurse who tried to resuscitate Jennifer. Everyone tried to do the best that they could under such horrendous circumstances. If Kelly was terrified to ever fly again it’s not aerophobia with her it’s traumatizing memories.
I don’t fly often at all but this truly makes me rethink sitting in the window seat.

Hollie avoided dying there by being a good person, putting the comfort of others before her own and sitting in the aisle seat, when she knew she'll need to use the bathroom a lot. It's just terrible that this happened and someone had to be hit by it.

@zhehinanimDE that's a stretch. It's also very inconvenient for the person having to climb over other people.

This is such a weird thing to say. . . She didn't avoid dying by being a "good person". Saying so implies that maybe if the victim was a good enough of a person, she would be okay. And who's to say she's not?

The value of what Andrew and Tim did is indescribable. Because of them, she was able to be laid to rest in dignity. Imagine how much more awful it would have been for the family if her body had been left unrecognizable or lost out of the plane. Because of those guys Jennifer’s family were able see her looking like herself one last time.

To be honest at that point it probably didn't make much difference. The body quite simply couldn't fit through the window, and the vast majority of the damage would have been done in the initial minute or so. If you look up the pilot who was sucked partially out of the cockpit window and survived, you'll see that the part of him outside wasn't actually injured much (I think he had some nasty bruising from the edge of the window and controls his lower half were wedged against irrc)

She was left unrecognizable. The last who performed CPR on her said "Imagine hitting the fuselage at 600 mph. There was significant trauma". I'm pretty sure that they had to have a closed casket funeral.
