    The two men on the boat actually witnessed the plane overhead and told the NTSB that it wasn’t more than 100 ft over them when it passed over them. That’s one of the reason they were so quick to the scene.

    • @jackelewish1568
      @jackelewish1568 6 месяцев назад +7

      The reason they got there so quickly is because they was already near where the crash was, then seen/heard the crash. Them seeing the plane over head or not has nothing to do with how they was there so quickly. It's not like they chased the plane as it flew. That's impossible even if they tried.

    On a Christmas flight from New York to Detroit the exact same situation happened. I had been feeling semi nauseous and apprehensive for two weeks before the flight but had no idea why. After being in the air for 20 minutes a crewman came out of the cockpit, tore off some of the aisle carpet, opened a trap door and went down. He came up whiter than any ghost from 401. He went back into the cabin and the pilot explained exactly what the issue was. We went back to LaGuardia and circled for an hour to use up the fuel. We then prepared to land assuming the wheels were not down. Fire trucks lined the runway. But the wheels did go down and we landed just fine. I’ve never been so shook.

    I worked at Eastern Air Lines as a gate agent & ticketing supervisor for the last 10 years of their existence. A lot of the people I worked with were there when flight 401 crashed. I heard so much praise for those flight attendants who (after the crash) continued to work for the company. While taking crash desk training (basically fielding calls and contacting next-of-kin and arranging their travel to the nearest airport for briefing) I heard story after story about the crash. The L1011s never had another crash on any route for as long as the airline existed. The 401 flight designation was retired (as are all flights on which something terrible happens), and it was used as a training example.

    I read an article in Esquire magazine many years ago where a man spoke about his experience with this flight . He was waiting to board when he was overwhelmed with terror . He tried to push the feeling down, got out of line for a moment , then got back in line . He told his wife that he was uneasy about the flight . She told him to stop being ridiculous . He got out of line and tried to calm down , then got back in the line . He told his wife that they needed to leave . She told him she was getting on the plane .
    So he slugged her and dragged her away . He blamed himself for not being able to warn anyone else .

    I read John Fuller's book about this. He was an author who traveled frequently and started hearing these rumors from flight crew members. He decided to investigate and even went so far as to contact Repo with a quija board. There were some other incidents experienced by stewardesses in the galley of some planes. Many of the parts of 401's galley were reused in other planes.

However, crashing to the ground is much more survivable, as my 11-year old brother flying unattended to our grandparents in Florida many years ago will tell you. I’m just a statistician who models such data. The majority of passengers survive crashes and there are things you can do to significantly improve your odds of survival. You are more likely to survive a plane crash than not, especially these days.
      Some numbers based on 2015 - 2020 data from bts.gov:
      if you were to board any flight during the year, you’d have about a 1 in 260,256 in a plane accident(not necessarily a crash)
      1 in 6,864,250 chance of being on a plane involved in an accident that results in at least 1 fatality.
      about 1 in 816,545,929 of actually dying in a plane accident/crash
      Those are per year
      Throw those numbers in google for source since I can’t post a real link :(

I did some research and the reason the Tristar didnt sell as well was it there were setbacks in the production of the rolls royce engines specifically designed for the jet and cost overruns as well which contributed to other large airlines such as American Airlines and United Airlines not placing any orders for the jet.

And by the time Lockheed considered contracting a different manufacture such as Prat and Whitney, GE, or CFC. Boeing and Douglas had already rolled the DC-10 and 747 out of their factories. The book is amazing and contains a few incidents that didn't make it into the movie, like a plane with salvaged parts from the crashed plane suddenly starting to slightly tilt repeatedly to the starbord side, in midair. A passenger sitting by a window saw a small glowing ball slowly jumping up and down on the tip of the wing causing the plane to tilt slightly. He called for an air stewardess and they both watched it. It suddenly vanished and then reappeared on the wingtip on the port side of the plane, again causing it to slightly tilt repeatedly before vanishing.

There was a small issues in one of the Tri-Star 111 galley, something that needed an engineer to fix, so called up to the flight-deck to have the engineer to come down have a look and see about either fixing it or if it needed to wait for the ground crew. Well a few minutes latter a flight engineer comes down and takes a look, tell the Stewardess it'll be no problem and he'll have it fix pronto. Latter on the Flight Engineer comes down having now had a moment to come and take a look, which the stewardess says that one already came down and fixed the issue. Their Flight Engineer doesn't look like the one that came and fixed it, and he's not findable among the passengers.

    I'm English but visited Florida many times, including going on an airboat in the Everglades. The idea of crashing into those Alligator (and God knows what else) infested swamps (that are vast) in the dead of night is absolutely horrendous.
    As for the supernatural element, it seems possible and is a compelling story. But given the crash was caused by human error, I'm not covinced of the logic behind the significance of the 'reused parts' element.
    I really enjoyed the video. The optimal time for these tales for me is about 40 minutes to 1 hour but longer is great, too. I think on this particular story, there is probably a much longer video as yet unmade, given the disparate elements.
    Anyway, another good entry into @TheTapeLibrary

    I’ve read a lot about this crash and the paranormal sightings but I haven’t heard such a detailed description of the encounter of the airline vice president with the dead captain. Either you are privy to a lot more information or you are gilding the lily. The other accounts merely state that the deceased pilot sat in his chair, looked forward silently and disappeared.

    Glad I recently subscribed to your channel! I've watched some of your videos so far, and will continue to do so. Fascinating and disturbing topics! This a was tragic accident. I remember a movie with Ernest Borgnine (who became a ghost in the movie...sorry to give it away to anyone who hasn't watched it yet) about the flight 401 crash. Interesting coincidence, I was living in the Miami area in the early 1980's, attending Miami Dade Community College, and got a job teaching math at a private school in Hialeah. Turns out the principal at the school was a former mortician that took care of bodies from that flight. He didn't go into great detail (thankfully) but it sounded bad. I'm trying to remember how that came up, and as best as I can recollect we were casually chatting about movies and I mentioned a movie I had recently watched on tv about the crash, and he told me that he handled bodies from the crash. I found Fiona2254's comment from a few days ago about her aunt very interesting, and thought I would comment.

    I remember watching a film starring *ERNEST BORGNINE* that featured the story of *FLIGHT 401.* In that film, it was the *FLIGHT ENGINEER; the part played by BORGNINE, THAT THE GHOST OF THE F/E WOULD FREQUENTLY APPEAR AND SAY: "THERE WILL NEVER BE A CRASH OF AN L1011 AIRCRAFT EVER AGAIN." The film also referred to the fact that undamaged parts from the "CRASH L 10 11" had been used on the various aircrafts on which the ghost of the Flight Engineer was frequently seen. Thanks for a RIVETING PROGRAMME!

    Why was the ground proximity alarm so quiet?
    Why didn't Lockheed make it loud like an alarm should be...and why didn't it go off at a higher altitude giving the crew more time to correct the error.
    and
    why was an auto pilot designed so poorly, that the captain brushed his leg against it and it disconnected.
    These by were things that Lockheed didn't think through well enough.
    yet it is common sense

    • @paulfitzpatrick6566
      @paulfitzpatrick6566 8 месяцев назад +2

      Totally agree & have raised exactly these points in other Flight 401 YT videos. UA subsequently recalled all their aircraft subsequent to this event & resited the light that caused the issue, made the alarm have a repetitive much louder sound that would carry on until it was manually disengaged by erynsomeone on the flight deck, meaning that the alarm would always be effective. Further training was given to every pilot & deck crew regarding the possibility of nudging the control column with any leg turning movement.
      All this being said, the general understanding of ppl commenting even today is that the flight crew were so taken up by the non functioning light, that they became fixated on it to the detriment of flying the aircraft, which they believed to be in autopilot all the time.
      As you say & I 100% agree, common sense should have ensured that this event would never have happened.
      But like a good friend of my own reiterates, common sense is a flower not found in many gardens.

    I just wanna point out that airboats used big block car or air cooled aircraft engines that have no need for any kind of back pressure from exhaust manifolds... the 5 miles airboat story is conflation of a couple stories. Everybody out on the swamp that night knew a plane went down and headed for it. Nobody was gonna hear screaming, cries of pain or singing over an Oldsmobile 455s or Lycoming O-360s with simple 75° pipes turning a six foot prop at 2500rpm. Once they got close enough to smell fuel on the water they killed the engine and poled in.

    I don't believe in the supernatural. However it wouldn't surprise me if ghostly apparitions turned out to be a rare phenomenon of physics we haven't discovered or understood yet. After all people used to believe events like earthquakes or lightning were supernatural and the results of angry gods but now we know they are completely natural. Maybe one day a scientific explanation of ghosts may be discovered.
