I know a couple of people who have been given statins and had serious side effects. My sister was one, she ended up walking with a stick because her legs kept giving way. Her doctor said it was nothing to do with the statins he had recently prescribed. Strange that, when she stopped taking the statins the symptoms stopped. Too many doctors are educated by drugs companies.

Two of my co-workers were on statins. Both are in there 60's. Both complained of muscle pain and weakness, headaches. One said he had "brain fog." One quite taking it on his own, the other was able to control his side cholesterol levels with diet and exercise. Needless to say, once both stopped taking the statins, the problems they had went away.

I was prescribed 40 mg/day of Atorvastatin to treat an elevated cholesterol level. I was asymptomatic at the time and the blood test showed only the elevated cholesterol and a vitamin D deficiency as things out of the ordinary. After about 3 months I started having severe and painful cramps in the calves of both legs with odorous urine that foamed significantly. A subsequent blood test revealed that I was in stage 2 renal failure, to my utter shock. There was no change to my diet or lifestyle during this period, so I could attribute this change in my kidney function to no other cause than the medication I was taking.
I immediately stopped the drug and adopted a low saturated fat diet with adequate fiber intake and limited protein and salt. The symptoms did lessen and I am feeling better, but I never went back to the doctor, at the VA clinic, and decided to not pump myself full of drugs and play Russian Roulette with my health. I'm also getting more cardiovascular exercise, which is also helping things out.

mrbigshotfancypants has a very good point:
Statistics show that people with heart problems and/or family histories of same benefit tremendously, even with some unpleasant side effects.
However, I stopped taking statins and am so glad I did.
People not in that situation are shown to benefit very slightly, but still have to deal with those unpleasant side effects.
As to the “very slightly“ claim on my part, statistics that counter what I just said cite relative percentage results, not absolute percentage. Research the difference between the two.

Approximately four years ago I was prescribed Atorvastatin (20mg) by a cardiologist. I took one tablet every night for those years. Fast-forward to three months ago. A nephrologist ordered some blood works on my kidney functions. After she got the results, she called and ask if I was still taking the Statin drug, and that I should stop taking them immediately because the test results showed a breakdown in my muscle cells. SMH.

Did any of these Medical Scientists after stopping the Atovastatin consult with Medical Personnel and have Blood or other Tests conducted to verify they were unnecessarily BEING given Atovastatin despite it's ineffectiveness?
Perhaps, the STATE/NHS should be grateful that Patients are more effective in testing Medicines. I nearer to 80 than 70 and have been using it for years. I do experience ALL over bodily PAINS. However, I do take a variety of Meds Daily but, cannot with certainty place the blame on this or that medication. I should love to be re-assured.

High LDL doesn't need to be lowered. Statin is needed only when HDL is lower than transglycerides. Also doctors massively overprescribe, that's why they cause so much misery to their patients unnecessarily. If they think statins will benefit their patients, they should prescribe one tablet per week, or two at most. The cause of cardiovascular heart disease is not saturated fat or LDL but alcohol, sugar and transfats. Patients should be told to stop eating processed carbs and everything with sugar and artificial sweeteners. A natural human diet is what people need, not meds where the painful and even dangerous side effects don't justify the supposed benefits.

I have included the general resources I used to make this video in the description box but I have to advise that you speak to your own health provider (e.g. doctor, nurse) so that they can properly assess your case. This video is not about pushing statins. It is about providing a clear, unbiased resource for the thousands of people who take them. I am not sponsored, paid for or influenced by big Pharma. Statins have a role in responsible medical management for many people. Whilst there will be cases of unnecessary prescription for many people they are a helpful medication depending on their cardiovascular risk profile.

It seems to me that a doctor prescribing atorvastatin should initially start with the minimal dosage, monitor the blood cholesterol level and note side effects, if any. Adjust the dosage accordingly. I don’t understand why an initial dosage being prescribed would be more than 20 mg daily until after several months of observation at a lower dosage.

Unfortunately (and I know this will be frustrating for you), I am unable to give individual medical advice out on this channel. This is because of medico-legal reasons, not knowing your full case, circumstances, and it would be unethical of me to do so otherwise. I have included the general resources I used to make this video in the description box but I have to advise that you speak to your own health provider (e.g. doctor, nurse) so that they can properly assess your case and whether this would be safe for you. This is the safest and most ethical advice I can give since this is just intended as a general educational resource. Thanks for understanding.

Yes, I'm sure it does. I don't worry if I miss taking it on the odd night.. when I was on Simvastatin 10 years ago I'm sure I had brain fog at least. Asked my Dr one day if I needed to be on them. I'd been in them 4 to 5 years. She said I could come off them for 3 months as an experiment. Sure enough the brain fog lifted within a few days! I turned that 3 months into at least 5 years. As I have always had an MOT annually, they kept an eye on my cholesterol etc. Good doctors surgery. Had a call from their specialist dietitian last November, who found out I had familial hypercholesterolemia, meaning risk is higher for fatalities. I've got to work harder with diet and exercise.

There are some odd posts on here. Just because you have a side effect from a drug, why do you then try to put off others who may not have that side effect? Some people are allergic to asprin but should we all stop taking it?
As I see it, high cholesterol is a real threat that can have serious consequences on your life in the future. But it has no symptoms or downside before it strikes. Statins are shown to lower this risk, but in taking them now they may cause a side effect now.
If you were told you will have a heart attack and die tomorrow but here is a pill you can take today to prevent it, you would take it. No matter what, you would take it. Now change the risk to just lowering your chance of possibly having a heart attack sometime in the future and you are a bit further away from the risk but very near to the side effects.
I think, don't dismiss the real proven benefit of statins.

This can reduce harm to patient for the long run. Usually business take control and not Doctor take control of it. Who ever take medication, it sound like take for life.
