I had a BP of 220 / 150, thought it was sinus headache, was put on amlodopine, , I've used it for about 20 years, with no side effects or problems. Was unable to get medication for about 2 months. No transport. No severe headaches( just usual sinus), got to clinic but my BP was 175/120. The doctor who treated me first said I had a severe type of hypertension as it was do high and I didn't feel suck, called it malignant hypertension. It is now back under control.

Most common side effect for amlodipine is a cough.
Doctor took me off of it a few years back during a thyroid crisis, as I was then given a calcium channel blocker and a beta blocker that works synergistically with the thyroid blocker.
Recent excursions in BP saw doctor prescribe it again, along with a massive increase in the calcium channel blocker and a bit of a medical misadventure, as doctor didn't notice a urologist also prescribing Flomax for no good reason, which also lowers BP and well, nearly literally passed out in the street. Tunnel vision, gray out, the whole nine yards, barely kept my feet by tripoding with my cane, fighting to just stay erect, as I didn't want to break the concrete sidewalk with my head. Or roll and turn into the road's newest speedbump...
Doctor did an "oh poop!" (OK, another word to judge from her facial expression when I mentioned Flomax, which has been discontinued and I'll be having some words with the urologist at my next appointment about that, given contraindications and no medical need for the crap in my case).
Still don't have a handle on the BP, that's all over the map, hypertensive one day, hypotensive for hours another, but my electrolytes and fluid balance are also wandering due to chronic diarrhea that I'll be seeing a GI doc for this coming week.
Oh well, it's fairly simple organic chemistry at this point, not (shudder) endocrinology. Got a follow up with endo soon as well.
Did well with the cardiologist though, we'll see after this week's imaging how the vascular surgeon evaluates my AAA...

Was on amlodipine for ages without a problem. Only side effect, a bit of an occasional cough.
Doctor switched me off in favor of my beta blocker and lisinopril 5mg and my usual medicine for Grave's and life was grand. Recently, BP started to climb, I suspect it might be some early decompensation to mitral regurgitation that was caused by COVID, but that's my own private theory. Doctor announced increasing lisinopril to 40 mg and that she'd not reintroduce amlodipine, but promptly prescribed 5 mg. Now getting hypotensive episodes, I'll be discussing that in detail this coming Friday. A reordering of morning vs night dosing helped prevent some overlap, but the syncope and vertigo from the hypotensive episodes, while decreased, remain in lesser severity. As an idea, BP was at 180/110, with new regimen a quick check while dizzy revealed 65/40, pulse pretty much regulated by the beta blockers at around 70.
Yeah, if followup wasn't so close, I'd be informing doctor of test d/c of the calcium channel blocker and if effective, have some sharp words about massive increase in ACE inhibitor *and* simultaneous dosing of a calcium channel blocker.
Only sharp words of a mild variety, as doctor is still a resident and that's why residents are there, to learn from mistakes. I've noticed the practice fellow is tracking my case, so the degradation in condition has been noted and he's aware that I'm medically well educated, having had advanced discussions on pharmacology with me in the past.
Don't envy the attending, as dealing with one's own patients, supervising residents and some being train wrecks is a recipe for singed tail feathers.
Mitral evaluation is scheduled with cardiology, AAA is being monitored and largely unchanged at watchful waiting, thyroid is good, even if TSH has elevated itself again and the methimazole is doing its job. Electrolytes are... Mystifying, but not out of range, save for magnesium, which is now being supplemented. CNS still holding at two remaining cells vying for third place.

@@belindagray4378 no, there is no and has never been any snake venom in lisinopril. It is derived from a drug that was derived from one component of snake venom, but that's like saying fentanyl comes from poppies, which it decidedly isn't.
Or like saying half of the statins are mold, again, not, but the original prodrug was derived from one substance made by one species of mold. Or even saying we're injecting bread mold as an antibiotic and again, nope.
As for the glioblastoma, sorry to hear that, but again, one study suggested a link in dogs and some BP meds. For one, people ain't dogs and frankly, there's one common drug in use in humans associated with testicular cancer in male beagle dogs only. Pretty sure we ain't beagle dogs and again, no association found in humans, only in beagles and there's a wee bit of inbreeding there. Well, in the dogs, not the humans. Gotta go to European royal families to find that one in...
One can look at research and get some really interesting views that well, would be ill informed.
Such as, there are more heart attacks and cancers now that smallpox has been eliminated. A first blush would be a take that smallpox protects against cancers and heart attacks and one would be wrong.
That smallpox killed 35% of those who contracted it tended to prevent people from living long enough to have a heart attack or contract cancer would be accurate.
Now, excuse me while I rest. Doctor had changed my BP meds, due to significant hypertension rearing its ugly head, for a change no secondary to thyroid storm and well, I suspect that she overdid things. Increased dose of lisinopril and after saying she'd not reintroduce amlodipine that I'd taken for years previously, reintroduced it and I've been getting some significant hypotensive episodes that literally are hanging around at shock BP levels. The beta blocker dose and effects remaining the same.
Pretty sure that the fellow who runs the practice as my primary gives me as a patient for a final exam for his residents... Largely due to a two word term unofficially used in medicine, "train wreck".

Do you have enough sodium intake? Cause your kidneys cant get rid of ex potassium if you don’t have enough sodium. Lots is people cut the salt out of diet, but your body needs some salt. Also, other blood pressure meds can also cause the kidneys to not eliminate the extra potassium.

It’s an enzyme inhibitor meaning that your enzymes don’t work as well.. Grapefruit juice can block the action of intestinal CYP3A4 enzyme, so instead of being metabolized, more of the drug enters the blood and stays in the body longer. The result: too much drug in your body

I have just discovered I have high blood pressure and I also have a very fast heart rate which I take Chanel blockers and a beta blocker.
The gp won’t give me anything for my high blood pressure and says I need to see a health specialist to change my diet and exercise. I’m disabled so can’t exercise and I only eat one extremely small meal a day. A baby eats more than me.
I’m concerned as my average bp is 150/105-178/110
My HR 109 resting to 165/170 when walking short distance to bathroom.
I’m banging my head against a brick wall.😢

Seek information about whole foods (unprocessed) that will help to stabilize your blood pressure. Mostly vegetables and fruits. Reduce salt and sugar intake. There are exercises you can do while sitting especially those that require lifting your arms above your head.

@@julletcoley756 thank you for the suggestions I will try what you suggested. I’ve never really used salt it’s not for me but I do like some sweet things especially fruit chews and lemon cheesecake!
I have now started some medication and I’m seeing a health coach at my GP surgery.🤍

What kind of a doctor spells amlodipine that way?

@MrBubbagrump Amlodipine is spelled correctly My physicians PCP and Cardiologist, as well as the pharmacist spells it that way. The brand name is Norvasc. As a retired nurse, it is spelled correctly.
I am more worried and interested in the side effect, adverse reactions, black box warning than the spelling. The pitting edema, itching, nausea, diarrhea and redness of my swollen feet are more concerning than the spelling.
Thank you Doc for this important information.

@@lucydobson25 Yes, the spelling was eventually corrected. I can only hope that my comment initiated the change. And, yes, I know all about the side effects of amlodipine. I had horribly swollen ankles, that were very painful up until a year ago when my doctor finally changed my medication. What took her so long? it's not that I didn't complain about the swelling at least every annual fitness check. The new medicine that I take seems to manage my hypertension just as well.
