I used to take Atorvastatin. My GP decided (as a type 1 diabetic on insulin) that I should take it without discussing the medication, side affects etc. My cholesterol has always been good. I stopped the statin without discussing. A few years later I had a regular blood test. The cholesterol was as good as ever! The nurse stated that was due to Atorvastatin. I said nothing but thought how funny that despite not taking the statin my cholesterol level is as good as ever.

Personally I strongly believe that it is very undesirable to make decisions on the way you take any prescribed medicines without keeping the prescriber informed. 'Very undesirable' is putting it mildly !!! - you can't expect your doctor to get the care right if s/he is making poorly-informed decisions. This includes the patient failing to share any doubts they may have about the prescriptions.

Atorvastatin is used to treat high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. An alternative treatment is to adjust your diet. My doctor wanted me to start using atorvastatin. I refused. I adjusted my diet instead. My cholesterol level went from 214 to 118, and my triglyceride level went from 517 to 106. People don't need a statin drug if they are willing to change to a healthier diet.

I would like to comment as a pharmacist who has been taking atorvastatin for over 10 years. Ostensibly, diet and exercise should be the mainstay of the management of hyperlipidemia. However, when lifestyle changes are not successful then statins should be utilized and are highly effective and very safe in the vast majority of patients. I would encourage every patient managing this disorder to work closely with their health care provider, and if during the course of treatment one’s lipid profile improves dramatically then reducing the statin dosage should be considered. With stringent dietary restrictions and exercise and the ensuing weight loss, it may be possible to stop the medication. Kudos to the clinician making this video, especially her advice toward the end.

A few years ago I started atorvastatin for my cholesterol. I’m an active 55 year old. I exercise most days. I took a TRX class at the gym was was at the end of a busy week of mountain biking and several days of golf. After the class I was sore like never before. I could barely walk. I went urine at the end of the day and it was like coffee. I called the doctor and they had me go to the e/r. After blood work, I was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. That is the dying of muscles and toxins are released into your blood. I ended up staying in the hospital for four days while they flushed my system with large volumes of saline. Although this is very rare, keep an eye out. If you’re active, stay hydrated. If you work out, don’t overdo it. Listen to your body.

    • @tomgates316
      @tomgates316 2 года назад +13

Contracted Rhabdo as well from Lipitor. In two days, went from feeling fine to couldn't hold my head up or walk 3 feet across the room. Was in the hospital for nearly a month and then 3 weeks at a temp care facility. Had urine like chocolate milk. Had to learn how to walk again and use leg muscles damaged by the Rhabdo. That was 9 years ago now - 2013. Require the use of a rolator walker (wheels and has seat) as I can only walk 75-100 yards at a time, then need to sit and rest legs for a minute. But I'm walking.
Another family member was put on atorvastatin, their reaction to it was problems with their gums. Within 2 weeks of starting, noticed tooth pain. Could use fingers to actually move each tooth. All their teeth were moving as the gums stopped supporting the teeth. Dr took them off the med. Took about 4 months for gums and teeth to get back to normal. Figured if kept taking the med - for them anyway - would have lost all their teeth due to reactions of the gums to the med.
Crestor was another branded statin. It was also noteworthy for causing rhabdo. It has since been taken off the market. In 2020 there were a couple of new meds in final testing to reduce LDL's and were not statin drugs, and so don't carry some of the possibilities of muscle damage.

Hey, John012196 ! Did your doctor say that the weakening of your muscles was an unusual side effect of Atorvastatin ? If that's the case, he lied to you, because it's a well-known fact that Atorvastatin ALWAYS weakens your muscles, more for some than others. I told my doctor that, since it weakens muscles, I wouldn't be taking it, because it could do damage to my heart. He said, "Yes, but not your heart.". How in the world could that be ? What a blatant lie ! My response to him was, since your heart is the hardest working muscle in your body, how could Atorvastatin not harm your heart, as well ? He brushed that off and insisted that I take it. I refused, and that's all there is to it. At 73, old age weakens me and I'm not willing to speed up that process. A doctor wants to keep his medical license, so he listens to what the AMA tells him to do. He will not deviate from it, regardless of what it actually does to his patients. According to a British research facility, no amount of exercise and going to the gym will ever restore your muscle strength, once your statin drug has done it's damage. IT IS PERMANENT !

My father died of a heart attack at the age of 47, following long untreated cardiovascular disease. A few weeks ago, one of my brothers died at the age of 48, in very similar conditions. My brother refused statins following advice on the Internet from people who think they know better. When I was 27, I found out that my blood cholesterol is 380. Knowing the fate of my father, I warned my brothers. This one could not be convinced. Like my father, he got progressively sick. Almost all main arteries were obturated by more than 60%, so much so that he was deemed inoperable. For example, one of the two carotid arteries was fully blocked (!!!) and the other was 50% obturated. He became mentally sluggish, and it amazes me he managed to live for 4 more years. The left femoral artery was also fully blocked, but the leg managed to survive with the blood it was getting by diffusion. He could barely walk.
I started statin treatment when I was 27. When I moved to Boston and NYC, the doctors at Mass General and Weill-Cornell scoffed at the low dose I was on. They increased it to 40 mg Atorvastatin. A recent abdominal CAT scan done for unrelated reasons showed minimal atherosclerosis of the abdominal artery (I am 50). Reading the report, I was thinking that my younger brother had it over 60% blocked. The difference? Statins. Do they have side effects? Yes, for me, mainly constipation. But until better medication is discovered, it is what it is.
My brother was not an idiot. Out of curiosity, I looked at the people he was following on Facebook and RUclips. The last opened RUclips page on his computer, was for a Dr. Campbell who "convinced" him not to get vaccinated against Covid19, against the wishes of his doctors. (He died of a massive heart attack, not Covid.) My impression is that these people are not ill-intended, just not competent enough. I have a PhD in chemical physics, and I understand the science pretty well. Make sure the person you talk to is competent. Don't think you can just simply understand what is going on. It is impossible to learn enough chemistry and medicine to take sound decisions. Good luck!

It is atherosclerosis that is problematic, and it is high LDL-C that is the main cause of atherosclerosis in time. I think you should strive to decrease your LDL below 80 mg/dL or so. My experience with my family is that low LDL is the single most important factor controlling atherosclerosis. The other factors (exercise, not smoking, controlling weight) are of lesser impact and, honestly, more difficult to attain than taking statins. If you have hard-to-tolerate side effects, try other statins. If you are fine taking them, and your LDL is still too high, increase the dose to 40 mg (that's what I've been taking for over 20 years) or take 20 mg of rosuvastatin. Of course, your doctor needs to approve this. My knowledge is limited to my experience with my family.

Did you ever think that your father or brother should look into why their body has raised their cholesterol levels. YOu do know that the entire cholesterol-causes-heart disease theory has been debunked over and over. The statins have saved no one's life. Did their doctor instead tell them to stop using seed oil, stop eating sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and processed food? That is the place to start. A real doctor would have this discussion. Taking a statin would not have saved their lives. Giving up seed oils and margarines might have. There is no '"vaccine" against covid. Any one who declines this is very wise indeed.

I was in my mid 60s when I was prescribed Atorvastatin 40 mg/day for an elevated cholesterol level. My blood test revealed only the elevated cholesterol and a vitamin D deficiency as possible problems. I was asymptomatic, having no apparent medical problems. After about 3 months on the drug I noticed back itching, skin problems, numbness in my toes in both feet, severe and painful cramping of my calf muscles in both legs and an odorous urine. A subsequent blood test revealed that I was in stage 2 renal failure. I immediately stopped the Atorvastatin and adopted changes in my diet to lower my cholesterol. The results have been a partial remission in my symptoms. I haven't had a follow-up blood test to determine the current level of my kidney impairment, although I have limited my salt and protein intake and that seems to be doing well for me.

After some research, I stumbled onto a website from a former NASA flight surgeon who had similar statin side effects. He mentioned the fact that statins reduce the bodies levels of CoQ10. I would also frequently get "foggy" brain. Hard to concentrate and forgetting simple things like passwords that I usually entered automatically. I had issues with Atorvastatin, and at the age of 51, after more than 6 months of taking it, I had pain in my back, and shoulders joints (when lifting my arms, like an impingement (I couldn't even do pushups without severe pain). I had visits with several doctors, including Orthopedics surgeon. An X-RAY, and MRI didn't reveal much, except a "possible" Rotator cuff damage. Not enough for surgery and they had me attend physical therapy. Several weeks of Therapy didn't help relieve the pain, and then my knees started giving me pain (I felt like I had aged 20 years in the past 3 months), and the pain was preventing me from enjoy my long walks, bikes, and light jogging.
I checked with my pharmacist, asking them if one, or a combination of the medications I had been prescribed could be causing this. They indicated it is common for patients to have issues with Atrovastastin, or another statin, and recommended having my doctor switch to another statin.
For months I stopped taking Atorvastatin, and within 4 days all my pain stopped. However, my next doctor visit my physician indicated that my cholesterol was elevated compared to previous tests (not high in comparison with the normal population, but I have another medical condition where it is recommended that mine be lower to prevent kidney complications). After I informed them of the issue, they prescribed Rosuvastatin and I continued to not have any join pain. However, I can't help but wonder if these statins are preventing me from getting a good night sleep?

Six years ago I had a heart attack. After putting in the stent, the cardiologist prescribed atorvastatin 80mg once per day. I don't know how he came up with that dosage. I asked him about side effects. He said not to worry about it. Three weeks later, I could barely walk, and it looked like I was going to go into a wheelchair. I searched online and found that one of the possible side effects of the drug was muscle weakness in the legs. I quit taking it, and over the next three weeks I regained the ability to walk again without assistance.

This especially being the case where Familia Hyperlipidemia is present. Data has also shown, collected over a two decade period, that many cases present with normal lipid levels yet, have significant CAD. What is the missing factor? You're both right and wrong. There are certain types of high bad cholesterol (LDL) profiles caused by genetic factors for which dietary controls (avoiding saturated fats, reducing sugar intake etc) have no ameliorative impact. That said, not ALL familial hypercholesterolemia is resistant to statin therapy. In homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia patients, statin therapy is often started in the first decade of life. Of note, however, homozygous patients are more likely to have null LDLR mutations, which make statin therapy less effective. Without treatment, the life expectancy of those with familial hypercholesterolemia can be reduced by approximately 15-30 years. However, in people with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the life expectancy may only be 20 years or less. The key is "stickiness factor" of arterial plaque which is made up of deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin. Some people have high LDLs and have squeaky clean arteries while others have low LDLs (relatively speaking) but still have significant coronary artery disease (plaque build up along walls of coronary arteries. Absent the most serious homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia rare form of FH which is HoFH (estimated to affect as many as 1 in every 300,000 people worldwide), statins along with anti-clotting, anti-platelet regimens are a proven therapy to prevent serious coronary events!

I was discharged from the hospital with all these meds. Always so dam tired. Dizzy, leg pain getting up in the morning. Once a month my blood pressure would jump to 190 over 110. Each time was a trip to the er. Last time it happened they gave nitroglycerin. I was also discharged in the beginning with a small amount of internal bleeding. I started at the hospital with a loss of five points of blood. The hospital told me I had type two diabetes. After eight days my right foot was amputated and a calcified heart valve. A year had passed I got tired of the dam side effects. Heart doctor never listened to me. I quit all meds cold turkey. Amlodipine, Lisinopril, atorvistatin. After two weeks no more leg or chest pain. I'm able to maintain fairly normal blood pressure and sugars with diet. I don't miss the meds at all. Everyone still perscribes this crap. They just don't listen. I don't worry about cholesterol. I throw mine out, they don’t do you any good, in fact they make things worse. They push up your blood sugars, and if your not already type 2 diabetic, taking these will help you to become one. The statin also destroys the good fluffy cholesterol and your left with more oxidised cholesterol. The cholesterol’s job it to help build and your body makes cholesterol so why is it bad, if your body is making it. Try and cut out vegetable oil’s and processed food. Coconut oil, olive oil and grass fed butter, are all great for you. There are loads of information on RUclips from Dr’s telling you the truth about medications. Most of it we don’t need to take. I got my dad off of this drug after he developed non-responsive behavior. He was like a zombie. It started about a month or two into taking the medicine. I presented the facts to his new doctor who not only took him off of it but couldn't understand why his last PCP put him on it to begin with. At his age and lipid levels, it wasn't worth the risk. I should have questioned her when she first prescribed it. Every time I blindly trust a provider, it doesn't turn out well. Another lesson learned... again.

Wow, that's very interesting. So Lonnie you mean your Father was literally almost catatonic...? How scary is that. And your comment about blindly trusting a provider...? Spot on for my experience as well - in several areas of healthcare actually.

@@valueinyou9931 Yes. Near "catatonic" was the actual word I used describing him to his doctor. He couldn't respond to words, sounds, and even touch. I had to go extreme and smack his shin with a brush handle, which snapped him out of it momentarily. Once we got him off the drug, he rapidly returned to normal, but I worked hard to keep his brain alert and stimulated. I'm glad to hear someone else knows not to blindly trust doctors. I preach this all the time and get a lot of resistance. I believe doctors are PART of my healthcare team, and I am a participant on that team, not a spectator.

And absolutely - NO WAY do I blindly trust doctors; I try to be respectful about it, but have been burned multiple times. Never again if I can help it. Don't worry about the resistance, I get it too. Thanks again, best to you and your family Lonnie, this was very helpful.

One side effect not mentioned is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Insidious onset (takes about 5 years on average) which makes it hard for most people to attribute to a statin. NOT rare, occurring more often than thought. If you are suddenly diagnosed with IPF or having mysterious lung issues, then talk to your provider about possibility of reducing your statin dosage or switching to a different class of drug.

I have been on atorvastatin for years. The first tablet I took immediately caused my skin to itch very badly, especially on my abdomen. My doctor insists I stay on the tablets due to family history of heart disease and stroke. The itch still happens, and now it is like a creeping itch. Scratch a spot, the itch moves to another area.
I am also taking meds for blood pressure, gout and stomach ulcer. My last blood test results showed issues with my liver and kidney function. My doctor queried my alcohol consumption as the culprit! My doctor is well aware that I don't drink alcohol, so as far as I am concerned, the meds are causing the concerning blood test results. Why are doctors so hell bent on denying that the meds they prescribe could be doing damage?

After 20 days apart from headaches I developed swelling of my lower legs which became painful, this was diagnosed as Celulitis naturally I was advised to stop taking these statins. Unfortunately, after a while, that caused me to experience pain in my legs when walking longer distances. I listen to my GP, and I also listen to my Herbalist. Doctors don't know
everything.. and I have found that most doctors are not taught that
natural nutrition has anything to do with maintaining good health (in
medical schools), however, that appears to be changing somewhat.
Doctors are excellent at treating disease with drugs because that is
what is taught. It all goes back to, "what you eat, drink, and breathe"
has the most impact upon your health. We have to eat, we have to
drink, we have to breathe, and we have to MOVE. Exercise is also
      crucial.
Pharmacies are massive money making powerhouses, and in my
opinion, are suspect. The Herb manufacturers are also becoming
money motivated. Bottom line is, I am the one who is responsible
for watching my health, and if I don't research and become an "expert"
on nutrition, and very informed on meds, then shame on me.
