  • Today I am sewing a 1950s vintage ballgown pattern that is strapless with a gathered skirt and detachable overskirt. I am using some amazing silk tafetta from silk baron and sparkly spiderwebs. I used a vintage sewing pattern Simplicity 1770.

Its not just your sewing that has developed and improved. I have always enjoyed the 'story' you tell of your sewing process but I really appreciate that we're hearing more of 'you' amidst that; the good moments, the bad ones, your humour and joy. Besides, we all need a space to vent occasionally! The fact that you continue to create and upload while struggling with health is a major accomplishment in itself!

I really like how you include the price of each project at the end of your videos. I think it helps people who are so used to fast fashion prices understand the labor and materials costs they take for granted.

Seriously though, talk with older people that you sew. It's how I've been given a serger, fabric, notions, a '46 singer featherweight sewing machine and a bunch of patterns! I know I'm so so so lucky!
The dress turned out beautiful and I love the spiderweb overskirt, the taffeta is especially luxurious and what a colour!

I am a srn and I learn from you. Your a very lovely energetic person. I enjoy watching your site. Your end of show talks keep them up. Yes workers are not been paid well in the services industry or the production workers. Take care of yourself. ❤from Canada.

Oh Hailey, don't be sorry, I come for the preachy. I like your videos because you connect the sewing project you are doing with the preachy (Kudos for doing the extra and looking up a couple of dresses for comparison)
Two tips: Underline-Even though it increases materials, you can machine stitch the boning on underlining -speeds things up. for overskirt-try it turned around with the bow in the front or see if you could make an underlining/lining and try as a cape...

Love this ballgown so much, the colour is so vibrant and really suits you. Funny as the overskirt with velvet ribbon is my favourite part so interesting you felt so differently about it.

I think with time away I like it more, but also I think I just love the color of the silk so much I think I have feelings about covering it.

This is so flippin’ cute! And versatile! You could even wear the over skirt as a cape.
Thank you for always bringing attention to our societal need for thriveable wages, and the vast income gap.

I’ve only worn stays so far but find car seats and any modern cushioned chair/seat/couch promotes way too much slouching to be comfortable in a boned garment. When I erase stays I like to stand or sit in the antique chairs I’ve been gifted my my in-law or have re-caned myself. The frock tail sounds like a touchy-feely event (but in a safe good way). Nice to know there are such supportive people out there!

I unfortunately missed out on tickets to frocktails in my city this year. But there's no way I could have had a fully me made outfit ready by then. I think that would be a great sewing goal for 2024.

Gorgeous! I love the shifting color of the taffetas and I am glad you will be able to make use of the spider fabric in a future garment. Frocktails sound like fun but I am not ready to go to one (still at the beginner’s stage!). Being able to touch other people’s clothes without looking weird, now that is nice.
If you ever get married, will you consider making your own wedding dress? I feel like you are definitely at that level.
Thank you for the video, I always get new tips watching them. This time it was putting the ruler between the two layers to hand stitch straight without grabbing the under layer.

You could totally go on a beginner garment, a ton of new sewists were there!
I don't really think I'll get married but if I do I'll definitely make my own dress, I've become too picky not to!

Hi Haley Marie. I love the colours of the dress and the dress itself. The web sparkly skirt looks perfect for Halloween. I love your new hair colours red and green. The red reminds me of the one I use to use 20 years ago not the same but very similar.

I love the poof, and I do actually really like the overskirt. I think it would go nicely with a simple light-colored fabric to give more contrast (or just black or gray?). Maybe there is just too much going on with the two-color purple?

Your dress is stunning 🤩Loving the way the Taffeta shimmers 🤩You are not at all preachy, I am very happy you discuss these VERY important topics & everybody is responsible, it irks me when people just blindly go by & ignore things. Thank you for your review on Seattle frocktails! I was debating on going but I wasn’t sure how I felt going alone. I definitely want to go next year. It sounds amazing and welcoming. Beautiful dress as always Haley! Reminds me of a historic ball gown when you wore it with the velvet cameo-like necklace.
