    You really nailed it on the head with all 3 movies. First one was okay, Crimes of Grindelwald was all over the place, this one was just boring and without real stakes. What's infuriating is that Rowling herself could have inserted events from the Famous Witches and Wizards Cards into these movies, such as Tilly Toke's intervention at Ilfracombe to save muggles from a dragon and such. It doesn't even handle the bigger picture with the consequences of Grindelwald being pardoned and what's in for the muggles. As for why Tina is barely in it, Katherine Waterston got hit hard by the virus, so by the time she recovered, it was late in production and she does look like she's still recovering.

    Can we talk about how the prison break/crab scene adds NOTHING to the story or plot - he gets captured and then gets rescued and its all just an excuse for some CGI animals

      Yeah this occurred to me to after filming the review. They should have added something where maybe Newt or Theseus meets another prisoner who has information about Grindelwald which helps them later on. That way it would have progressed the story.

      By the same reasoning, I think you could say that most of the film was unnecessary. There are many scenes, but barely any plot.

  • @hiker1392
    @hiker1392 Год назад +2

    I think the downfall of Fantastic beasts is the lack of a central focus. Is it about beasts? About Dumbledore/Grindlewald?
    The second film didn't help, (with Johnny Depp wildly miscast).
    The third could have been decent, but yeah, the plot just doesn't pull together.
    It did have good aspects, Newt and the Qillin, Mads Mikkelsen (I can see him with Jude Law, yes I can), just too little too late.
    RIP films 4/5.
    It would be interesting if your opinion changes with rewatching.

    I have problems with the logic of the Wizarding World in these. Like, why make Bunty go to a Shop to replicate the briefcase when there is a Gemino Charm.
    Also, I wish we saw more of Grindelwald’s effect on the Muggle World. Like, I don’t feel he did anything in this film.

    • @hogwartsexpert
      @hogwartsexpert  2 года назад +2

      Yeah was the guy at the replicating shop just a muggle guy who was like a leatherworker or restorer or something? Or was he meant to be a wizard?
      And yeah I agree, the Harry Potter series showed the muggle world way more and it felt like there was a contrast between the mundane muggle world and amazing wizarding world. In these films they barely show the muggles and the design aesthetic feels very similar because of the time period. Jacob's bakery feels like it could have been on diagon alley. Would have been nice to have seen attacks on muggles, like the bridge attack in Harry Potter, to really build the threat more too.

    I'm like 10 months late to this review but wanted to share my thoughts:
    - Tina's actress was extremely sick during filming and they couldn't work out good scheduling times. Additionally Nagini's actress was Pregnant so she didn't appear.
    - I actually really loved Crimes of Grindelwald. I found Fantastic Beasts 1 pretty boring and I love the complexity of Crimes of Grindelwald. I say that as a writer myself lmao. I think it was executed poorly, but I loved the script.
    - This film was pretty mediocre for me. The climax was horrible and it actually makes Dumbledore look like an idiot.
    - Lally was one of my favourite additions - and I think overall the characters are actually really strong.
    - I do agree that the film is very serious. Newt is a highlight but they don't give him much to actually do. Like he's just kinda there half the time. It's very action heavy, and doesn't feel as magical as the other films. You said it in your trailer analysis but revisiting Hogwarts was dull, it wasn't exciting, and ultimately didn't even need to be there. I would have loved a scene where the characters enter the great Hall for the first time, and just have them marvel in the greatness for a few seconds. That's what I liked about the OG films, even admist the action, there was always time to stop and appreciate the magic. Though I feel like David Yates as a director doesn't appreciate the magic.

    • @dylantd9189
      @dylantd9189 Год назад +1

      My biggest gripe was that Queenie & Jacob got married at the end of the film. Like they needed to work through what happened first. Like Queenie literally betrayed them. I think they kinda knew the film could be the last (and it seems like it is) so they wrote it in to give the characters some what of a nice ending.

  • @NoEvidenZ
    @NoEvidenZ Год назад +1

    I remember liking the first one, and Eddie Redmayne is excellent as Newt Scamander. Jude Law even can play a good Dumbledore, and like you said the actor who played Aberforth was quite good. I don't think Johnny Depp was good casting for Grindelwald. Mads Mikkelsen would've been my pick from the start, however he wasn't exactly set up for success when his turn finally came around.
    The main issue for me though is that Dumbledore and his story should never have become the focus of these films. If they wanted to make a film series about the conflict between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, that could have been great, but it didn't need to be shoehorned into Fantastic Beasts and a story which started off about Newt Scamander. And to that point - if Newt was instrumental in Dumbledore's defeat of Grindelwald, why is he only ever known in Harry Potter's time as the author of a text book?
    It's pretty plain to me that there wasn't enough idea here for a trilogy, and that shoehorning a story about characters other than those the fans already associated with the property name has only served to harm the series as a whole, dilute the role of the core characters we enjoyed from the first entry in the series, and really overshadow the charming performances we saw early on.

    Tina wasn't in it for the same reason Thomas Hayden Church and Rhys Ifans weren't in No Way Home (aside for voice roles).
    Scheduling and travel. This was filmed under covid restrictions remember.

    I watched all three films over a week, after having seen the first one years ago. None of them is good IMO, and as you said the problem is the writing and directing. Mostly the writing. The plot is trying to be complex and adult, but instead it's confused and depressing. The dialogue too was pretty weak, though the third film had a few good lines (probably courtesy of Kloves). The look of the films is grey and bland, as you said. The cast is also an issue; most of them don't have the charm and charisma of the HP cast. It says something when the only character everyone likes is the plucky comic relief.

  • @fran131415
    @fran131415 Год назад

    I agree it's terrible. But the International Confederation of Wizards existed in the original books.
    The film was doomed from the beginning. They had heavy rewritings and reshoots.
    I disagree with the part of the production design. Yates' Hogwarts is bland, colourless and detail-less

  • @hersirirminsul
    @hersirirminsul Год назад

    I liked it. It wasn't great, but it scored some 'nostalgia points' with me. Jude Law finally bothered to be Dumbledore instead of -well- Jude Law. But a more honest title would have been The Secret of the Dumbledores - as it was Aberforth's secret, not Albuses as we naturally assumed.

    // SPOILER WARNING (Just in case someone scrolled through anyway)
    I watched the film last week and reeeally enjoyed it. Its kinda sad that you weren't able to feel the same way but different people feel different things and that's something I totally respect. Here are my thoughts about the points you made:
    - About the "lack of secrets", i mean, credence being aberforth's son (even though it was not the outcome i would have liked the most) is quite a decent secret to present in this movie imo.
    -Your point about making the blood pact just a lie created by dumbledore isn't really applicable i think, since in The Crimes of Grindelwald, Grindelwald does point out the fact that he can't attack Dumbledore (because of the pact) and Grindelwald does have the intention to stop him... so making it a lie (from dumbledore's part just to avoid fighting grindelwald) wouldn't really make sense (at least from my perspective and what i remember, any feedback is appreciated ;)).
    - About Newt's coincidence about the Qillin, yeah i do think that it is a bit odd (though probably it was dumbledore who sent him there), and i do agree with you for the most part.
    These are basically the things i do disagree a bit with you. Anyway, i think you did a good job explaining why you feel the way you feel about the film. All the best :)

    • @hogwartsexpert
      @hogwartsexpert  2 года назад +3

      Thanks for the comment! Yeah that's the problem with films being subjective I guess. I think my problem with the secret being Aberforth is the father, is that they already told us he was a dumbledore. And tbh I took that as implying he was Albus and Aberforth's brother, so actually the reveal that he's Aberforth's son actually feels less interesting to me. And good point about the blood pact, I guess you could have spin it that Albus also lied to Gellert but that might be getting way too convoluted!

      I only have two questions I wish to be answered.
      1: Do they explain in-universe why Grindelwald looks drastically different? Not just casting-wise, but with his hair and beard style and color as well as the eyes?
      2: Do they actually bother SHOWING this time indefinitely that Dumbledore and Grindelwald were a romantic couple? Like, showing any on-screen kiss or such? Or heck, even just confirm verbally that they were a romantic couple?

    • @JE0Ny
      @JE0Ny 2 года назад +2

      @@kurvos For the first question: They don't explain absolutely anything about the appearance change. There's no mention to it whatsoever, it's like nothing happened. For the second part: They don't really show their physical relationship in any way, there is no visual for it, only some sentences said by the characters that allude to that "romantic" relationship (which doesn't really sound much romantic but still...). Hope it helps ;)

    I don't know. I quite liked this film especially Mads Mikkelsen's "new" Grindelwald.
    Secrets of Dumbledore - the point is not Albus' only his brother's.
    But that being said we know about Tom Riddle's first opening of the Chamber of Secrets 1943 I think it was or at least that's what I heard. And the second thing is the duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald in 1945. So with that in mind I cannot help but think that if we were to get these two "nice epic" things that would be the 4th and the 5th film (considering JKR wanted this to be 5 films). And I am getting this feeling that the first 3 films are supposed to be money making filler episodes that are only good for world building I guess. And in reality this could have been one or two films max with those two events I mentioned above.
    Anyway as I said I kind of like these movies despite the fact that they aren't perfect.
    What do you think about what I mentioned?

    • @hogwartsexpert
      @hogwartsexpert  2 года назад +1

      Yeah I think you're probably right. If that was the plan all along though then I think they've gambled wrong because the 2nd and the 3rd film don't feel like they're building excitement for more films in this franchise. It feels like diminishing returns each time, at least in terms of box office returns. I'm honestly wondering if they might cancel the final two at this point unless this film manages to turn around it's box office results.
