    The problem with this franchise has been the sloppy mishmash of the Fantastic Beasts plotline and the Grindelwald/Dumbledore rivalry. If the movies had decided to focus on just one plotline from the beginning, reception would have been different

      Good movie but contradicts A LOT of what was established in the og HP series. These are a few IMO:
      1. Jacob and his wand. How can a muggle use a wand if a wand is supposed to channel inner magic of a wizard... and muggles do not have that magic. To go a step further, how can he even go through the walls and magical porkeys (like at the German Ministry)?
      2. Why is the Supreme Mugwamp post so important in this series? In HP 5 (book) it was established that Dumbledore lost his position as Supreme Mugwamp after the whole Voldemort is Back situation. It was very that the post wasnt of any importance at all. If it was, how can the 'leader' of the wizarding community be threatened by someone like Doleres (a British Ministry staff) or even be a skl teacher? Why would? What even did Dumbledore as the Supreme Mugwamp? In this movie, the Supreme Mugwamp was portrayed as a celeb but how come Dumbledore wasn't portrayed in the same manner at all (when be was Supreme Mugwamp). Anw, the point is, it wasnt important then, how is it important now?
      3. The whole mirror dimension in the Credence fight.. and also the fight with Grindelwald (if the mirror dimensioms were the same). If these sorta different dimensions where nobody sees the duels exist, it completely changes the whole combat aspect of duels in the wizarding world.
      For the Fantastic Beasts series and in terms of cinematics, the movie was great but as a Potterhead, probably not. Would be great MovieFlame or Rowling herself can answer some of these questions in the future. Would rly love to hear what you potterheads think as well.

      Pls explain why the Supreme Mugump post is so important all of a sudden as well. In the book (HP 5), they mentioned that Dumbledore was the Supreme Mugwump untill he lost the post after the Voldrmort is Back situation. But didnt rly mention anything Dumbledore did as the supreme mugwamp. In fact, it wasn't even portrayed as of much importance at all. How come Dumbledore had no control over the Doleres situation as a Supreme Mugwomp for example. Or how would Fudge even think that the Supreme Mugwomp would want to steal his position as the Minister of Magic which is far inferior to the Supreme Mugwump. If Dumbledore was the most powerful (by rank as the Supreme Mugwump) in the world, how come he had to obey all sorts of commands by the Ministry of Magic UK and werent even like a celebrity like Supreme Mugwumps are portrayed in this movie (FB 3). This rly need to be explained.

    Let's be honest, most of us Potterheads are only interested in Dumbledore and Grindelwald storyline. It's was a huge mistake to include it in this franchise...I absolutely think that Fantastic Beasts should be its own trilogy which sets up the next trilogy for Dumbledore vs Gridelwald!

    • @Evy2526

      Yeah, this one is my favorite precisely because we focus more on Dumbledore and Grinderwald. Fascinating stuff.
      However, I love Newt and the beasts, they bring warmth and heart to the story. The problem is that those two stories don't mix well. Why would Dumbledore recruit any of these characters to fight Grinderwald? That's really strange to me.

    I think the forced inclusion of magic animals has really outstayed its welcome. Grindelwald having to brainwash a magic zombie deer rather than being a charismatic public speaker with a convincing plan like in the last film really weakened his character for me. Newt also feels a little out of place. It really could’ve been about dumbledore and grindelwald without having to keep the first movie’s cast. Could’ve just got rid of the fantastic beasts title and had the first movie be a standalone adventure. Just call this “The Secrets of Dumbledore”, let D and G be the main characters and trust that the “wizarding world” intro tells audiences what franchise it’s a part of.

  • @J_Tevo
    @J_Tevo 2 года назад +49

    These movies shouldn’t have huge stakes…
    These films should be about Newt going round on adventures with ‘Fantastic Beasts’.
    Search for a dragon to save from poachers, discover a mysterious beast that’s been heard about for centuries but never captured, stop a killer animal that’s terrorized a small town… etc
    Then you can do the Wizard world war in a different franchise, bringing in Newt after his trilogy. You then care about the new characters and introduce new versions of the old ones, I.e. Jude Law Dumbledore.

    Watching the movie I think two things are very clear; this franchise should have been about Dumbledore from the beginning, and Mads Mikkelsen should have been cast as Grindlewald from the onset. Depp was 100% miscast for the role, Mikkelsen brings more depth and is a more compelling villain. He and Jude Law also have great chemistry.

  • @jayg339
    @jayg339 2 года назад +6

    Yeah I’m pretty confident this franchise at least needs a change in directors. David Yates dark aesthetic worked great towards the end of the Potter films because the story itself became darker, but it seems out of place in the Fantastic Beasts series. The series feels like it would benefit from a nice bright color palate to really bring that magic and wonder back to these movies.
    Also, I think JK Rowling shouldve just written this story as a series of novels first and then let screenwriters interpret the story into a compelling film. JK Rowling writes great novels - not so much when it comes to film.

  • @ryanansloan2686
    @ryanansloan2686 2 года назад +52

    This is one of those unfortunate series where everything happening off-screen is more interesting than what’s happening onscreen.
    Having just seen all three movies back to back, this is probably the best of the trilogy but they have a common problem: there’s just a lack of magic. I think this third one benefits from the return of Yates but even now he still has trouble depicting magic the way that Chris Columbus managed to in the original two HP films.
    And the absence of Tina really is painful. She’s been my second favorite character and if it really is just because of pettiness on the part of Rowling, that’s a shame and just more evidence that she’s got too much power in this franchise.
    Mads is a better Grindelwald than Depp, even if I don’t particularly care for the circumstances that led to the replacement being made.
    I think there may be a good, even great, movie series somewhere in here but three movies in, it has yet to show itself. That doesn’t bode well.

    The movies could have been like the anime Mushishi. It should have been a trilogy focusing on Newt, his gang, their adventures with fantastical beasts. That could have been so much fun. In a similar tone to Dead Man's Chest. Great action scenes, characters you can get attached to. If they really needed to shoehorn in legacy characters, they could have come up as cameos or supporting characters. Like Dumbledore making an appearance and helping Newt on a quest etc.

    • @asr2021
      @asr2021 2 года назад +2

      Counter Point. This entire series should have been about Dumbledore, like the Harry Potter series before it, since J.K and W.B are desperately trying to please their HP fan-base and making references to it constantly in any case.
      Movie 1 - Dumbledore: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Here, they could have introduced Dumbledore(Jude Law) and Newt(Eddie Redmayne) as co-leads, the plot of the movie revolving around those two. The threat of Grindelwald slowly building up and Dumbledore enlisting support and preparing for war in the shadows. Towards the end Colin Firth is revealed to be Grindelwald, evades capture and offscreen, shape shifts to Johnny Depp.
      Movie II - Dumbledore: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Here they could have mostly focused on Johnny Depp as Grindelwald. Developing him as a charismatic, very powerful & dangerous leader. Dumbledore, once again would be featured as a co-lead. Still choosing to operate from behind the curtain, he desperately tries to use Newt and the other mages to stop Grindelwald's crime spree to gain power and favor. They fail miserably. People get killed and others like Queenie choose to switch sides. His followers begin questioning his decision to not face Grindelwald himself. They call him a coward. Grindelwald comes on top at the end of this movie. He feels like no one can stop him and finally assumes his true form, that of Mads Mikkelsen. (Essentially, this movie should have been all about Grindelwald and his crimes, as it was named!! duh!!)
      Movie III - Dumbledore: The Secrets of Dumbledore. This movie would or should have been an exploration of Dumbledore - his past & present. This movie should have been told from his perspective, the series finally putting him in center stage. They could have taken the opportunity to show us a younger Dumbledore, his meeting with Grindelwald, their friendship perhaps a blossoming romance. The blood pact. Aberforth. The connection with Credence. A terrible death in Dumbledore's family. Meanwhile, Grindelwald is amassing more power and perhaps he has already convinces a majority of witches and wizards to join his cause. At the end perhaps they finally meet and have a chat, like Magneto and Xavier does(It's basically the same conflict here too! *sigh* ). Grindelwald tries to persuade Dumbledore to join him. Dumbledore refuses. Grindelwald straight up threatens him. Dumbledore just smiles like he always does.
      Movie IV and V could have been about the war itself.
      Note: Just like how the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher changes every year, I like how the actor playing Grindelwald changes with every film, even if that was never J.K's design.
      Note: Yes, I wrote this before I watched the review. :)

Fantastic beasts should have been fun movies about magical creatures more in the tone of the earlier harry potter movies aimed at the younger audience. While the story about Dumbledore and Grindelwald should have been a separate series entirely billed as a prequel to harry potter with a darker tone aimed more at older harry potter fans.     Few initial thoughts after watching this movie last week from a casual HP (movies only) fan;
    Too many characters, too little to care about most of them or plot/ story.
    I was big proponent of Newt up until this movie, but do we really need Newt going forward?
    Do we really need 5 movies to tell this story?
    Was there any "secret" alluded to or implied or revealed in this movie? Can't recall anything substantial.
    Why is magic missing in what is supposed to be fantastical movie?
    "Fantastic Beast" aspect still seems ham-fisted, more so than before.
    All in all, only thing going on for this movie is that;
    It's better than the 2nd movie and maybe on par or a bit better than the 1st one,
    Mads Mikkelsen and Dan Fogler.
    My rating: 6/10

    This film felt like 4-5 different films smashed together and while I was on board with about 3 of them (the actual fantastic beasts one, the Dumbledore family drama, the romantic drama between Albus and Gellert) and they worked fairly well together, the unfortunately put the biggest focus on the 2 I was least interested about (the magic mafia film and the far-right political thriller). The tone is all over the place, characters keep popping in and out of the action and clearly had full side adventures and character development we don’t get to see but are expected to resonate with, the dialogue is HORRENDOUS at parts (the bit where Newt explains how he knows Hicks is particularly painful, as well as the random sum up of the previous two films??). It all boils down to the same problem the previous ones had - JK is a novelist, not a screen writer. She doesn’t know how to introduce exposition onto screen in an organic way and gets too convoluted in plots and reveals that would work in a novel, but not on screen. My feelings about her aside, this franchise’s only hope is to get rid of her as a writer and only use her as a consultant and get some strong screenwriters onboard.
    As a film, this wasn’t that bad, but as a Harry Potter/Wizarding world film it was TERRIBLE. The magic made no sense at times (that’s not how they told us that portkeys work), they completely change important aspects of Dumbledore’s past that were key characterisation elements for him and his arc in the series, she’s retroactively trying to change a series people spent 2 decades being familiar with and it falls flat for fans, doesn’t work for newbies to the world either. Just a bloody mess.

    Dan. The problem goes all the way back to Nolan’s “Dark Knight.” That film was so grim and dark but was also a huge, monster hit, that WB made that the style guide for its DCU and every other franchise in its I.P. library, rather than looking at “Dark Knight” as a one-off, lucky break. Instead, every film they produce must be getting negative C.E. “notes” to simply bleach the joy and fun out of every single story beat, and to “bleach bypass” or DaVinci Resolve color correct set to 90% “Desaturate” the films’ footage, so that no color or any life accidentally seeps through to the audience’s eyes. It’s a totally grim and wrong-headed approach that is borne out of WB executives wanting to telegraph that they “get” cinema and are “keeping it real” when in fact they are know-nothings who die on the hill of the book “Save The Cat” for story structure and story beats, and who are applying that Christopher Nolan movie plug-in to every film WB now makes, as if it were a drop-down in Adobe Premiere.

    • @tomasmaniago5832
      @tomasmaniago5832 2 года назад +1

      I think the dark tone of the DCU had more to do with Zack Snyder than with Nolan (though the success of TDK probably encouraged Snyder to go that route) and in regards to Harry Potter, the movies were already getting dark (and needlessly desaturared) with The Order of the Phoenix, which came out a year before TDK.

    The first mistake that critics do is compare is FB movies to Harry Potter movies. HP is more of a young adults movies that go darker as they grow older. While FB is always more adult oriented. It's how adults do magic in that world. And, another thing, of course these movies will continue to grow even darker as this is the first wizarding war. Grindelwald seeks power and don't want to hide from muggles anymore. And, with Dumbledore tragic backstory, it also make this movie more adult oriented.

What is Wizarding like in America beside the bureaucracy we saw in the first movie. Yes of course Dumbledore and his secret love affair would be great but show us don’t tell us about Ariana because the story they told doesn’t make sense. Ariana was an Obcurial except they just explained in the first Fantastic Beast that Obcurials are witches who suppress their magic in order to escape persecution from muggles….except Ariana is from one of the greatest Wizarding families ever and her brothers both went to Hogwarts so why didn’t Ariana?? The change in story seems like a way to still save face with Dumbledore coming off as a bad guy for killing his sister….because it isn’t so hard if she was an Obcurial and was gonna die at a young age anyway

    The problem with these films is they let Rowling be too involved. As she has shown with her continued HP lore that she talks about on her website and Twitter, the more she talks about the HP world outside of the books the worse it gets. For instance her trying to say the The Cursed Child is canon goes completely against the backstory that she had written in her main 7 books. I truly believe that if they had just kept her as a consultant and never let her be a screenwriter on these movies they would be a lot better. Wether they would have been about Newt Scamander or like Dan suggested and be a true prequel series about Dumbledore and Grendelwald.

    I'm still trying to understand what's the whole purpose of the Fantastic beasts series. They seem to add absolutely nothing.
