I think it's laying the groundwork for Grindelwald to surrender during their duel and that's how he's defeated. We see that he does love Dumbledore in his own way cause he couldn't kill him at the end of this movie when they had finished with their hands on each other's chest AND when Dumbledore turned his back on him and walked away. He also was known to show remorse after years in prison in the books. It'll be interesting if he would start showing some remorse by the time they duel at the end of the franchise!

The problem with this series, is that JK Rowling does not know how to write films. She is a novelist not a screenwriter, and gets too hung up on useless subplots and convoluted twists.
The setup and characters are actually pretty straight forward. A guy who travels the world, his Auror brother and girlfriend, a witch/muggle couple, the friend who was murdered by the villain, and a muggleborn teacher. All of which fit into the Dumbledore and Grindelwald rivalry and WWII. Credence was a plot device used to tell Ariana’s backstory without actually showing it.

You can't just look at an RT score, and assume that a higher rating means a movie is good, and a lower rating, bad. It's not that simple these days. You have to be aware of other factors, to enterprit what the rating really means.
How I read the 51% score of THIS movie is that the film ISNT ad bad as the rating suggests. At least 15-20 points were likely deducted, due to JK Rowling backlash. The true score, free of any ulterior agendas, is around 70%.

It was all caused by Aberforth’s disapproval of their relationship. While it was not directly stated what the disapproval was about, it could be assumed that them being gay was the reason that sparked the anger (this all happens years prior to the movie’s timeline, so perhaps tolerance in the wizarding world has improved).

Great review! Here's what I would love to have happen with this franchise...
    1. I agree, this should mark the end of the Newt-Jacob-Queenie storyline and continue with Dumbledore-Grindlewald (in fact, Warner Bros. should've launched the Harry Potter prequel with the Dumbledore spin-off. He was and still is a beloved character...they should've given us more of what we care about. No shade to Newt, but coming off the end of the Harry Potter film series, no one wanted to see Newt collect creatures. Give the fans what they care about. This reminds me of your criticism of how Warner Bros. (WB) is handling the upcoming Game of Thrones prequels--allocating resources to stories the fans don't care about).
    2. I think, well I hope, this is the plan...but, WB should continue with the Dumbledore-Grindlewald story (only 1 movie for this) and give us the greatest battle in Wizard History to wrap up that storyline. However, this time, WB should include a mid-credits scenes that serves as a time jump and shows the exact scene from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince where Dumbledore meets young Voldemort aka Tom Riddle.
    3. Now the next movie jumps right into the first Wizarding war with Voldemort (I see that being a 2 part movie; with part 2 ending with Voldemort attempting to kill Harry Potter, which lead directly into Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, thus putting a beautiful bow on the Wizarding World film franchise). Granted, I know there may be some pushback because the original actor who played Lilly Potter, for example, is much older....but I am pretty certain WB can do some great casting and get people who resemble the original actors.

The biggest issue this series has is letting JK write the scripts. She is an incredible novelist, but that is a very different writing skill to writing a movie script. They should never have rushed into these movies. JK should have taking the years to first write out the series as books, taking her time to get the story she wanted to tell mapped out clearly. Then let the studio come in, hire script writers to translate the books into movies. JK took years to map and flesh out the Potter series in her head even before the first book came out. She had everything lined up from beginning to end. With these films you can tell she only had a rough outline when they went into production on the first film and is now trying to connect all the dots as each film is written.

    • @fellowkrieger457
      @fellowkrieger457 Год назад

Totally agree, she should have written the whole series in books, and other people would have written scripts and the movie from that.
They feel like having the same wacky roadmap as Star Wars Sequels. Adjusting the story of each episode of the series depending on tweets that happen at the current time.
It is kind of sad that Fantastic beasts in the title, is in little, and Dumbledore as taken all the space available. Is it the story of Newt or Dumbledore, sounds more like Dumbledore's.
But then, they have a cast of characters they don't know what to do with. Jacob, Queenie, Newt's brother, even Newt is kind of sidetracked. And he was a fun character to follow that's a shame.

I agree with you they should have shown Dumbledore and Grindewald past instead of let them talking about it. I liked Credence fight with Dumbledore and the arc they give to him,but should have been a longer fight, the ending for Credence was touching but I would have like to see more about it, Credence is an important character. I think there were too many stories so they cut alot and didn't get deeper in the caracthers and I think most of the arc of the caracther are complete so yes not sure of the need of a 4 movie. I loved Mads Mikkelsen more then Jhonny in the role.

Grace, as to both the fight between Dumbledore and Credence and later Dumbledore vs. Grindelwald, Dumbledore seals the fights and their destruction into sort of a parallel pocket universe of sorts, in order to protect the surrounding people/actual space from potential harm. Think mirror-verse from the MCU. It's not very well explained, but still.

It's hard to say if Grindlewald did it or did not love Dumbledore back. I think in the end, when he is confronted by Voldemort about the wand, Grindlewald is reluctant to tell him Dumbledore has it so his grave wouldn't be desecrated.
    So that shows some love.
But he is very manipulative. He likely came to Godric's Hollow to specifically to befriend Dumbledore because he saw that Dumbledore was the one who stopped him. So he made that pact to prevent Dumbledore from attacking him.
He is a long con kind of person
I really wish they started the movie with Grindlewald and Dumbledore as youths and the fight.

I liked this movie. Already watched it twice, but Dumbledore is my sole reason to follow this story. I hope that they get to do at least one more movie to wrapped this up. I NEED to see that final fight with Dumbledore and Grindelwald. Don't care if its another movie, and HBO Max series or whatever. I just wanna see Jude Law playing Albus again. But they need to fix this franchise, that is important if they wanna go forward. Anyway, maybe there's no Fantastic Beasts 4 & 5 for now, but we're getting an AMAZING videogame coming our way based on the Wizarding World. I never thought I'd say this but maybe the future for the witches and wizards is in the videogame media, because the game looks like an instant hit. Whatever they do, I'm in as long as Dumbledore is in.
    Great review Grace, as always.

I’m surprised how this got a rotten tomato on RT. Was damn impressed with this movie. That final scene killed me. Albus all alone with so much envy while observing what was one of the warmest wedding scene in a while was just so… sad and happy and sad and happy but super sad all at the same time for Albus. Jude Law killed it with his expressions - the emptiness that comes with accepting that you just lost any chance at love… that disheartening “what if” feeling that keeps wanting him to imagine it to be himself and Gellert instead in there… I could feel just how envious he was of Queenie and Jacob. I am now a fan of Jude.

Dumbledore's thing is that he isolates himself - he did that in the main series and he did that here. It's his MO, constantly, to save society at arm's length. To love the world, but only by removing himself from it; to be always the aloof brain behind the operation. It is, I think, part of why Grindelwald appealed to him; G does the same D does. Even then, though, their romance was when they were younger, and probably more open. In my opinion, it would be disingenuous to his character to give him a love interest for that reason.

As a gay man myself, I found myself cringing at some of the cliche dialogue not just between Jude Law and Mads Mikkelson, but in general. Although I appreciate the representation I’m given in this film, it wasn’t strong enough to me. In fact, some of the “chemistry” you describe between them doesn’t feel organic at all. I don’t blame the actors, the writing is the weakest part of this film. Jude Law did the best he could given a really terrible script. As also a Potterhead since Chamber of Secrets, this film unfortunately has taken the Star Wars route the sequel trilogy took: cringe nostalgia. I found myself yawning and bored in the 3rd act. The entire family storyline between the Dumbledores and the side plots were just so surface level and mediocre. Terrible terrible script.
PS: In my opinion, Dumbledore vs Voldemort fight is still better than this fight.
I would NOT recommend any straight or LGBTQ+ people to watch this film. It definitely does NOT outweigh the drama caused by creator JK Rowling at all.
I almost walked out of the theater twice. Jude Law is the only reason why I stayed.

Newt and company were always meant to be the supporting cast to Dumbledore and Grindelwald battling it out during WWII. It is a shame JK Rowling had to over complicate the story with convoluted backstories and subplots. Newt travels the world and studies animals. The very animals Grindelwald slaughters to practice Divination. Theseus and Tina are Aurors, while Queenie and Jacob are a witch/muggle couple. Lally Hicks is muggleborn and Charms teacher. Leta should not have killed off so early, and used as the double agent/spy. All these characters work to support a WWII setting, and enhance Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s rivalry. It should not have been that difficult to pull off, had WB just hired Steve Kloves as the screenwriter from the beginning.

Dumbledore not being alone thereafter is a huge no for me. It makes zero sense for the character, be it the HP book canon or the movies' canon. Almost every decision he makes and definitely all his mistakes come back to the fact that despite loving people in general he did not get past his trauma and learn to open up to them both because he was emotionally compromised and because he felt he destroyed everyine he got close to.
I think that the parts of Credence's story I appreciated (despite his story being rushed) was the communication through the mirror and the fact that he exposed Grindelwald calmly and having control over himself, not just driven by anger like it's usually the case for him. Throughout the three movies, every time Grindelwald tries to manipulate him and abuse him he touches his face and plays on his hunger for human intimancy, so I loved the visual parallel of Credence smudging him with phoenix ass right before exposing him.
The way Dumbledore described the events before Ariana's death leaves out a big part and if there's not more to it it makes little sense. I hope that they threw that scene in in case they didn't get another movie, but still plan to have flashbacks if they get the green light for more.
Mikkelsen's Grindelwald was phenomenal and not just because of his chemistry with Law. There are several scenes during which we glimpsed Grindelwald's vulnerability and his delusions, and it was not conveyed verbally. It was just the acting and it was beautiful.
Overall I LOVED the grindeldore parts of the movie and liked it as a whole. That said, I definitely think that, while there are some interesting elements throughout the countersight plot, they may get easily lost among the MANY things that are happening. I would have chosen a little less focus on the fun parts and a bit more time to further develop for the politics and the rest of the characters.

It's funny how an almost absolute democracy like the wizard community was saved by some ancient rite in which an animal chooses the "most pure in heart"' to rule. Also no one suspected that the Qilin might have been magically manipulated, as one would expect from the most notorious dark wizard of the time. I really hope we will see more of Credence - it did not feel like a worthy conclusion to his twisted journey.
Nevertheless I really liked the movie mostly for the aspects you have pointed out. Especially the beginning and the scene when they entered the german ministry of magic.

    I really enjoyed this movie.
And as a gay man who grew up with the release of the Harry Potter series,
Dumbledore was always an inspiration - more so when JK Rowling announced he is gay.
And I don’t fault her for not including it in the books - the societal and political climate at the time was not in a place to accept that.
Not to mention all the heat the Harry Potter series was already receiving from certain Christian communities for focusing on magic and witchcraft.
So to see Dumbledore be the star of a movie and to have his tragic romance focused on meant a lot.
Along with all of that, the movie was a fun, dark adventure with bits of whimsy.
It’s always a joy to go back into the wizarding world 🥰🥳✨

I think the problem with these movies is essentially they come up with really great, creative ideas and visually stunning fight scenes, but they just can't seem to know how put it all together. There are so many inconsistencies and the plot overall isn't that much cohesive. The main reason for that being the whole magic thing, so with no clear rules established since the beginning on how magic work, they certainly can't help it.

I thought it was a much better step in the right direction for the story than the last movie. I agree about credence but at leastbhe got a decent ending and explanation of how he is a Dumbledore. I really liked seeing the dynamics of Gallert and Albus together on screen. It really put their relationship front and center. Professor Hicks was awesome! The politics was also really cool. Except I didn't really understand how the voting worked...Mads was scary, especially at the end when he used crucio on Jacob right after being elected. Hogwarts and the music gave me chills. The duels were really cool and the use of magic as well, especially at the end. I loveeeddd how much more of the Wizarding world we got to see. Especially in Asia it was so cool. I agree the focus now should be on the 2 great wizards and their inevitable showdown, but I hope Newt is kept around still to help, as well as Professor Hicks. I think just seeing albums going it alone (as a lead) against Grindelwald will be a mistake. We already have established characters and I like the use of the fantastic beasts. Especially in this movie. I hope in the next installment we see a more unrestrained Grindelwald and his followers in a way that sows terror across the Wizarding world.
Also I think Albus is going to probably not see other guys, he is very much changed by the time of Harry Potter and I think he found ways to connect to others and find love that was not romantic to fulfill his heart. He's a deeply caring and loving man in the books with close friends. Obviously his duel with grindelwald leaves a big impact and he changes a lot, including probably not wanting to be vulnerable or close to someone romantically again. At least not to the extent he was with Grindelwald. I also hope Grindelwalds main followers get named/have bigger roles. In the Harry Potter movies/books, not only was Voldemort scary but his followers like Bellatrix, the Malfoys, Peter Pettigrew, Barty Crouch Jr, Yaxley and Dolohov were all also scary.

The Qilin kneeling for Dumbledore felt incredibly pandering to me. Dumbledore has never been pure of heart, he's always been the the crafty one who manipulated others for his version of the greater good. Arguably doing what needed to be done but not in a way that has ever spoken to me as "pure of heart." This entire movie felt like it was scrambling to get its feet underneath it after the meandering disaster of the larger narrative from the previous two films and I felt it succeeded at that but not much more than that.

My take on the water drop is that it was a spell that led to an hallucination. I believe that the same thing happened with the Phoenix ash dropping on Grindlewald - a form of manipulation of natural elements. The purpose is for Dumbledore to confront an angry opponent in a safe manner. They fight but it’s not really happening and Dumbledore is still able to try and turn his opponent to the light side. It’s probably something that only Dumbledore, as the most powerful wizard in the world, is able to do and therefore even other powerful wizards can not combat the magic.

The one thing I can't get over tho (besides the lack of explanations or the disregard of canon) is the election. Like, what??? They just shoot colored sparks and that's a vote? How is it counted? Why wouldnt one wizard be able to do this multiple times? And how do they know the votes from the people around the world??? That part was silly and took me out of the movie.

If this movie was meant to tie up the fantastic beast part and the others will be Dumbledore I'm all for it.
I want to see Grindlewald at Dumstrang, I want to see him getting expelled. I want to see it paralleled with Dumbledore's Hogwarts career (him likely being the last Triwizard champion) and graduating with the expectations of great things ahead and his vaulting pride and ambition . Then the inevitable dissapointment of having to stay home and care for his sister. I want to see Grindlewald visions, how they affected him and why he developed his ideology.
If they can give us that. I would be happy.
It is agreed that Grindlewald likely went Godric's Hollow because he saw that Dumbledore would be the one to stop him. Hence he manipulated him to make the blood pact.
All this stuff is so much more interesting than Fantastic Beast gave us.
I want Hicks and Theseus back but not Newt, Queenie, Jacob or Tina. They are holding the story back. If they are in it, I want their roles to be backdrop.

My take on the blood oath is that one couldn't individually break the oath, but if they both wanted to break it, it would end. So, their spells hitting each other around Credence in the end is them both deciding to break it.
