Personally I would recommend studying Chinese in a smaller city than Shanghai with fewer foreigners. There are many English-speakers in the Fudan language program and they don’t get to interact with us degree students. They come and go very fast. They don’t much of a chance to be a part of our community. Harbin is a great place to study Chinese. It’s cheaper than Shanghai and there are few English speakers, which forces you to use Chinese all day everyday.

I am an American, who graduated from Heilongjiang University. I LOVED studying in Harbin. I have also studied at Shanghai University. I then was accepted to Johns Hopkins. For Americans, I suggest going to school in Northern China and not Beijing (I love Beijing). Just speaking about language. You are not Chinese. I find the Northeastern accent in China to be 1) Easiest to learn 2) Best for Americans to learn due to the similiarites in regional culture and the use of "er" 3) Price 4) Desirability, second tier cities are simply less saturated with Americans.

It's definitely not a waste of money to study in a Chinese University, especially if you also get a HSK 6 language level.
If you come from a "developed" country (at least, as a French person, I can guarantee it for France), it will allow you to get many job opportunities in tourism and luxury sectors or in international companies working with China. And if you are bold enough maybe find a job directly in China. Your advantage would be being able to speak 3 languages: English, Chinese and your mother tongue!

I think it’s preposterous to claim that English taught degrees in China will be of a lower quality compared to degrees in countries where English may be the official language. Mind you if you’re getting a degree taught in English you’d be taught by foreign teachers and instructors many of whom might not even necessary speak English as a first language, which was the case for you too. The same thing applies to universities in Anglo-Saxon countries, many professors are foreigners too who speak English as a second language and that’s absolutely not an indicator of quality of instruction. I don’t get your logic. Also and most importantly, people and you included are just so accustomed to the idea that the entire world needs to adjust to the anglosphere.
A globalised world is more than the amount of countries who adopt English as a lingua Franca. Sure English is spoken worldwide, but the reason is due to the Anglo-Saxon having been the dominant economic and military power for the last two centuries. Naturally, China is bringing multipolarity into the picture. If your objective is business or Chinese education and working in China then you should be open to learning Chinese. English didn’t become a universal language in a day and neither can you expect Chinese to be the case. However, I’m sure Chinese will continue to be a more attractive and popular language as China’s sphere of influence and soft power grows. Much in the same way as South Korea and Japan. It’s a matter of time. I’m a polyglot, and I’ve always views new language acquisition as a plus. Being bilingual, I.e. speaking English as a second language isn’t the norm anymore. Being able to speak a third or even a fourth language and having a broader perspective and understanding of other countries is what gives you a competitive advantage.
The whole point of studying in China as opposed to an Anglo-Saxon country is to learn from the Chinese perspective, technological advances, philosophy and whatnot. It’s the same reason why Chinese people go to study abroad, they’re not intent on pursuing a degree in Chinese when they go to the states or Australia per se. So to anyone who wants to study in China for the right reasons mainly that you love China, the language, you appreciate Chinese academic reputation and more importantly you think it will help you achieve your academic or personal goal then do it. If you want to get a degree in English like this lady did, then by all means do so too, however you’re definitely not getting the full experience of studying in China. If you want to get a degree in English go somewhere else like Singapore. If you want to learn Chinese and are willing to put in the work to study Chinese in the same way you learned to speak English then you’ll probably be making one of the best decisions of your life. Going to a foreign country just for the cool factor and not for the right reasons is a mistake. Many Chinese kids can’t get into Chinese unis and choose to study abroad, however they end up staying in their Chinese bubble because anywhere you go you will find chinatowns and Chinese communities. They don’t particularly improve their English nor get to know what it’s really like where they go.
