  • Had to take apart a turn key 355 purchased from five star engines after breaking two pressed and pinned studs. Both snapped at the spot of the pin since they were not drilled straight. Tapping for some ARP screw in's and I'll be good to go.
    Save yourself a world of headaches and dont buy from fivestar engines, they installed an extreme energy cam and dual valve springs and yet dident bother to upgrade the studs for me. Thanks again fivestar for your shotty workmanship

    Great way to break your tap dude. That's why it is important to go in a couple turns and back off one turn to keep the chips from binding. Taps do break and when they do you have less hair on your head at the end of the day. Taps are made from super hard steel and will break like a biscuit and it is hell to drill them out and remove the broken piece. It's machine shop 101.

    That tool is meant to be used with the screw in studs that don't have a hex portion for a wrench. Those studs are supposed to have the bosses machined whether you run guide plates or not. You run the risk of running out of thread for the rocker nut to adjust the valves doing it this way. If you had no problems, cool, you got lucky! 🤘

      So you're saying the stud is too high and you won't be able to get the rocker arm low enough for good geometry?

      @@sawyerbarnes7439 they make specific screw in studs just for this job that you can screw right into the boss after taping with this tool. Great upgrade for a good set of stock heads.

      @@sawyerbarnes7439 or another option you can do....is to drill through the boss AND stock rocker stud and roll pin them.

    They do have screw-in studs that won't force you to cut the bosses down. They don't have a hex head to tighten it down, so you'll have to use two 3/8-24 nuts to do it. Uses the same size tap 7/16-14 to tap the bosses.

    I was always taught in HS Machine Shop to back out the tap after cutting about 3 turns. I would use Permatex 2 on the stud threads to keep the coolant out.

  • @tayb504
    @tayb504  11 лет назад +7

    you bet they did. ended up having to buy a boss cutter and milled them down about 3\8ths of an inch. then had to re-tap alll the wholes again. was a bitch, so learn from my mistakes.

    tap em out with a ball pein and a small punch or finishing nail. then use some washers and your rocked stud nut to pull it out of the boss. if the stud is broken inside the boss you should be able to just hammer it down into the waterjacket without issues.

      Seems dumb not to use oil no matter if u have to or not lol it helps lube the cutting edges and even if u don't need it for the head (which I believe u should) u still wanna use it to get more cuts later from your taps

      Those Studs will not be Straight when he's done GUARANTEED !! That stuff needs to be done on a Correct Head Machine or Mill . Let's see Straight Edge across those studs when Finished!?!? if you want a Nice running Long Living motor Don't do it that way.

      yeah I had the original motor made by five star engines. just a little over bored 350. they pressed and pinned the studs and I eventually had two snap off right flush with the boss. had a leaky rear main seal from start. after having the motor for 6 months and only a few hundred kms's Started to lose oil pressure. main bearings started to score which eventually led to me snapping the crank in two.
      five star did not stand by their warranty and was one of the worst experiences I've ever had.

    Friend I put some screws arp in the head of the 350 and the balacinho can not regulate the system aibsa original rods and tuchos, the problem and that it slopes in the base of the screw not saying much and giving slack in the rod.
