The thing is, Fire Alarms are designed to create a sense of urgency. They're not meant to sound nice. They're supposed to be like "dude gtfo there's an emergency." Sure it's not meant to scare you, but it does need to make it serious enough for you to get up and leave.

At my school, we only do pre announced fire drills because our fire department requires it. When the alarm goes off unexpectedly, evacuation is pretty rough due to this and because we need to be on the lookout for a possible shooter. Usually if it’s a false alarm the school will shut off the fire alarm and stop the evacuation within about 1 minute. If the alarm goes off for more than a minute then people will start to move a bit faster because we know that it’s real.
For drills, the following script is read:
Good morning/afternoon (school name), today we will be participating in our (first, second, third, or fourth and final) fire drill of the school year. During the drill we ask that you remain quiet, move swiftly while proceeding to the designated evacuation area, and remain quiet while roll is taken. Teachers are reminded to shut off lights, close doors as you leave your classrooms, and grab your red folders in case attendance is requested. We will also be sending out a check in via crisis go. Thank you for your attention and we will begin the drill in about 15 seconds.
Simple script and gets the point across. Also worth noting that all 2500 + students at my school fully evacuate the building in about 100 seconds during a drill. Therefore, drills don’t take any longer than 3 minutes.
I think this quick, announced, and well planned type of drill is best for several reasons, mainly being that every student from the age of five knows exactly what to do in a fire evacuation. The procedure varies from school to school but simply put, you go out the nearest exit and go at least 500 feet from the building. My second reason is that if you have fire alarms going off for drills randomly, that desensitizes students to fire alarms. They will always assume it’s a drill even if it’s real. Lastly, even if there is a fire, if a modern, fully sprinklered, fire proofed, and fully fire doored building catches on fire, are we really worried about anything happening? You are statistically more likely to be shot and killed upon evacuating for a fire alarm than being killed by fire.
That all being said, times are changing and fire drills need to change and be rethought too. Change isn’t always a bad thing, although the reason for this change is extremely evil. Active shooter drills must be prioritized. Schools had fire problems, and to this day we solved them. No fire deaths since 1958. It’s time we solve our active shooting problem.

    • @SportyTrainGuy

Thank you for telling me that; it feels weird here in the city I live in because in my elementary days, they wouldn't say anything over the speakers about any drill until either the fire alarm rings, or they would say "start the lockdown/tornado drill" or something like that. But I believe since my middle school's fire alarms were Spectralert Advances, I believe that it was when pre-announced were made. I really don't know why my high school does pre-announced drills, but I'm actually thankful to not be jump-scared everytime the drill would start, and gives me plenty of time to record.

I don’t think fire drills should be pre-announced because if there was a real emergency people wouldn’t announce it like, “There’s going to be a real fire in about five minutes!” No one would already know about it. And the protocols of a fire drill is to practically act like it’s a real fire because you have to evacuate quickly, but when they are pre-announced, no one takes the drill seriously because they already know what’s happening. It’s just like knowing that a real fire is happening before the fire alarms sound off, you DONT KNOW UNTIL THEY ANNOUNCE THAT THE FIRE IS REAL AND TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY! So yeah. Don’t pre-announce the fire drills so people take it seriously and act like it’s real, which is what your supposed to do. LIKE IF YOU AGREE!!

They really should put these types of alarms in elementary schools. When I was in kindergarten, I was traumatized by an old Simplex fire horn. It was very loud and kept blaring without pause. A year ago I returned to the school and saw that they had the same alarm system. I was pretty annoyed thst they didn't replace it with a newer one.
I hope they ban loud horns from elementary schools one day. They can really scare certain kids.

Before anyone decries, "Oh, you shouldn't announce that it's a drill because you need to take it seriously," etc., why don't y'all stop and understand why it's come down to this these days?
In recent years, some school shootings have had fire alarms maliciously activated by the shooters to lure victims out. This has obviously made unannounced fire drills more traumatic for some students and staff, and has even resulted in some kids absolutely refusing to submit to the drills due to PTSD. That's why they are announcing drills these days.

So they warn you in advance of each drill? I know a lot of administrators don’t like doing that. Of course if it’s a real fire you won’t know. But being warned in advance reassures that it’s not a real emergency. So should it go off unannounced you would think there might be something wrong. If you can practice when you know there’s no fire, you most likely won’t panic that much because you know it’s not real.
