Hey everyone! We have updated this video with a bunch of new content. Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/bIPvb6JyE2k/видео.html
It's interesting how some of these films are still considered classics, while others have pretty much disappeared from memory.
+neonatalpenguin
and so will Spotlight in a couple of years
+Lt. Col. Frank Slade Let's be honest here, out of all the nominees the only one that will be remembered will be Mad Max
+Matei Lascu *this year
Matei Lascu
Yeah Mad Max and The Revenant will be remembered i think. (I hate Mad Max, but it is true) and The Revenant solely because it was the film that Leo won his oscar for, and because it's one of the most beautiful films ever shot, and because it's a visceral theatrical experience, one of a kind.
(at least, in my eyes)
Matei Lascu
I think Bridge Of Spies will be remembered as a solid addition to Spielberg's career, if for no other reason. I think The Martian could have a long afterlife too. Of the eight nominees, they certainly gave the award to the film most likely to be forgotten.
You missed Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl
Agent of SHIELD robbed
lol
I like the little touch of The Departed scene essentially laughing at the Crash scene
Zachary Levin Yes these guys have those kind of editing touches that make these videos great
Saving Private Ryan got robbed in 1998
This video is perfect.
+Joe Rose Thanks Joe!
That Lord of the Rings score though
+NaijaCINE Seriously, of all these great films that gave me the biggest chills.
+Rajesh Acharya Lotr. It gave me most chills too
NaijaCINE though what?
Best score ever. Howard shore is a genius
NaijaCINE it made me have so much nostalgia
This is awesome, makes me want to watch them all
I actually have, including this year's winner. Except Spotlight I have them all on DVD
+reptongeek favorite?
I don't have one favourite, there are so many! My favourites on the list are; It Happened One Night, The Best Year's Of Our Lives, All About Eve, The Apartment, The French Connection, The Godfather, Driving Miss Daisy, The Silence of the Lambs, Unforgiven, Schindler's List, Argo and the new winner Spotlight. Least favourite is a cross between Tom Jones and Midnight Cowboy
Russel Crowe movies 2 years in a row? Damn
Also Meryl Streep in 1979 and 1980 and then again 1986 (those are the years the ceremonies were)
Michael Keaton probably this year. Birdman and Spotlight
+Auto mate Nah, The Revenant is winning best picture.
Kyle Bower Mad Max Fury Road
Joshalots Nah, great movie but not deserving of BP IMO
Whiplash should've won last year :/
+Grayson Myers
yep
+Grayson Myers nahhh Birdman was better
xxeugenioxxx
Except being technically great, Birdman was very mediocre. If it wasn't a 1 take movie, it would've been forgettable
That's very true. But I am one of the few people that didn't particularly enjoy Whiplash. Found it overly dramatic.
Absolutely
Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas. What.
lord of the rings should have won 3 times in a row
no
AllBrushed Models yes
The Pianist in 2002
Majority says no, this is for great art films, not CGI fantasies
LOTR is both great art, but also a CGI fantasy that's the point.
May I point out the poetry that the first movie is "Wings" and the last one is "Birdman"?
Nathan Goedeke But it isnt the "last one" anyway
And the academy award for best picture [should have gone to]:
1927: Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
1928: The Passion of Joan of Arc
1931: City Lights
1936: Modern Times
1937: La Grande Illusion
1941: Citizen Kane
1944: Double Indemnity
1945: Les Enfants du Paradis
1948: Bicycle Thieves
1949: The Third Man
1952: Singin in the Rain
1953: Seven Samurai
1955: The Night of the Hunter
1956: The Searchers
1958: Vertigo
1959: North by Northwest
1960: Psycho
1963: 8 1/2
1964: Dr. Strangelove
1966: The good, the Bad and the Ugly
1968: Once Upon a Time in the West (or 2001: A Space Odyssey)
1971: A Clockwork Orange
1975: Barry Lyndon
1976: Taxi Driver
1979: Apocalypse Now
1980: Raging Bull
1981: Das Boot
1982: Fanny and Alexander
1990: Goodfellas
1993: Three Colours Blue
1994: Pulp Fiction
1996: Fargo
1997: LA Confidential
1998: Saving Private Ryan
2001: LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring
2002: LOTR The Two Towers
2004: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2005: Batman Begins
2006: Pan's Labyrinth
2008: The Dark Knight
2011: The Tree of Life
2012: Django Unchained
2015: Son of Saul
2016: Hell or High Water
Many great films have won the award throughout the years, but some decisions can only be described as strange.
+Selveste100 No Brokeback Mountain for 2005? Or Good Night, and Good Luck? Or even the underrated Munich?
+94dfk1 Must admit I havent seen neither Brokeback Mountain nor Good Night and Good Luck. Maybe I should. There are probably other films that could be mentioned too, I just wrote down those I consider the most shocking snubs.
I agree with most of these, specially Vertigo, Taxi Drive and Pulp Fiction
+Selveste100 spot on !
2012: The Master
I really don't think Rocky deserved best picture over Taxi Driver in 1976...not by a long shot.
The reason I love Rocky winning is that it reflected the underdog story of Rocky one, in real life. :)
Jordan Cadwell Well you're right it was Taxi Driver...but Rocky is still the ultimate underdog story. You gotta be kidding yourself if you're gonna say it still doesn't strike a chord with People. I think Scorsese was cheated from his director award for sure though
Rocky totally deserved it
Mika Arguello Um have you seen Taxi Driver?
Jordan Cadwell I agree, Taxi Driver really should have won
I love Forest Gump but how did the hell did it beat Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction?
especially Shawshank
MegaSilverBlood Fuck Shawshank its overrhyped. Pulp fair enough
Oh, ok
are you for real?
Mika Arguello Yes, Yes I am. The movie is very good, nowhere near the greatest
man in retrospect the academy isn't good at pickin em
I'd say a third of these are the best choices, a third are pretty good (though there were equally or slightly better alternatives) and a third were embarrassing mistakes.
I agree... so why do so many of us hold the academy award as such a high honour?
Bruce Wayne I agree
Bruce Wayne aye
How the in the hell did Roman Polanski's The Pianist lose to Chicago for Best Picture?
+Water Hazard The director of Chicago hasn't raped anyone? Not that we know of anyway.
TetsuoShimaNo41 Ah....interesting...
Gangs of New York also.
Water Hazard The studio spent a lot of money campaigning for Chicago. Honestly though, it is one of the most boring musical of all time.
I saw Chicago for the first time recently and am astonished it won. Then again I'm kinda shocked/annoyed that there's no animated winners either so maybe my opinions differ from the Academys a little.
Didn't expect to watch the entire thing.
During the 70's the Oscar were on point for the most part. Godfather 1 and 2, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Annie Hall, and The Deer Hunter. All still considered to be some of the best films ever.
because they simply made the best movies at that time
But they made a mistake on the second half by not giving the award to Apocalypse Now. Probably the best war movie ever. Does anybody still watch Kramer vs Kramer? I mean it had great performances but it wasn't superior to Apocalypse Now
Jordan Cadwell I 1000% agree with you. It was the only decade that they knew what they were doing.
I'm still piss about Saving Private Ryan
Super Rabbit we all are.
Super Rabbit Why?
shakespear in love beat it
Michael Boiteau OH.
I'm more pissed that freaking Crash beat Brokeback Mountain.
I still can't believe Crash won Best Picture, is one of the most ridiculous and pretentious movies ever
+RZ K
Why do people hate Crash so much....
+RZ K It blows race issues WAY out of proportion.
*****
Or BrokeBack Mountain.
Because it's mediocre and dumb. And it won over four better movies and other that weren't nominated.
Matei Lascu
I really dont think it's that bad... Yes it didnt deserve to win, yes it blows race issues way out of proportion, but people calling it the worse BP ever, clearly havent seen most BP's, because there are much worse ones.
2016: MOONLIGHT 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Viwe Mbava they did won! 👏🏻👏🏻
damn you're smart 👏👏
I wonder if an animated film will ever win for best picture...
Not unless it's a historical drama or something.
IlikeJev I don't understand the question.
IlikeJev best movie pretty much
Well theres a category for best animated feature film so that wouldnt really be possible
Both Up and Toy Story 3 were nominated in both categories, and Beauty and the Beast was just nominated for Best Picture.
Im sorry but who here thinks Pulp Fiction got robbed?😔
I definitely do. And I liked Forrest Gump.
Shawshank was good too
pulp fiction , forrest gump and the shawshank redimption deserved all an oscar
How did Crash beat Good Night, and Good Luck and Capote?!?!
Madness.
Sagiv Yahav Shawshank should've won. It was better than Forrester Gump.
Ugh, Shakespeare in love and Crash... Why.
+kknighteypics Even if it's a mediocre movie,I can understand why The Academy gave Crash Best Picture.
HOWEVER,I still can't understand how the hell Shakespere in Love beat Saving Private Ryan.I mean Private Ryan was exactly the kind of movie the Oscar Voters would usually give Best Picture.
Answer: The Weinsteins
But hey, at least Spielberg won Best Director. Let's not forget that.
BlueFox94 It's incredibly awful that the Weinsteins convinced voters to choose Shakespeare In Love, yet didn't manage to do the same thing for great films like Inglorious Basterds or Django Unchained.
Matei L I'd argue that they're past their prime, given the Oscar paths of The Imitation Game and Carol.
BlueFox94 I didn't like Carol, but how it didn't get nominated for Best Picture remains one of the show's biggest mysteries for me.
Just put La la land for 2017, I'm not saying it desrves but we know it's going win
Tomiwa Aina I know, it's been nominated for pretty much EVERYTHING.
After the US election, I'm not certain about anything lol
Tomiwa Aina Arrival, damn it!
Banzai Boy I actually haven't seen that yet
Tomiwa Aina I'm still holding out for hell or high water.
The Artist & Crash never should have won, so easily forgotten.
Crash definitely shouldn't have, but The Artist was an amazing film.
Implification of Video Games crash was cool and all, but you're right, not best picture worthy.
Wise Man, Wise Words To be fair 2011 had a pretty bad nominee line-up.
7:06 Left of frame
+Dean Barnett Yep, you can see the camera crew including one person in blue jeans and white shirt. Looks like part of a camera tripod there too.
Was the editor high or sleeping? Maybe he was really into that speech..
I still have no idea how _Dances with Wolves_ beat _Goodfellas_. I just don't understand it.
TheAndrewj96 The academy doesnt really like Martin scorsese for some reason.
I'm glad they at least gave them The Departed. That was a fantastic movie and probably his best.
degree7 Well, it's arguably the best mob movie ever made.
Its arguably the most boring mob movie ever made.
It is boring. it only has ONE memorable scene, the "funny" scene, thats all that is good abou it. For example even State of Grace is better than that.
Just realised Michael Keaton has been in the last two Best Pictures back to back. Glad to see him back in the big time.
This is purely amazing. Thank you for making this!
I'll never understand how "Crash" beat out "Brokeback Mountain" at the 78th.
Still will never forgive the academy for giving best picture to Shakespeare in love over Saving Private Ryan.
This is so great! I really love the choices you made of which clip to use.
Thank you for the time travel,
that was awesome!
Why does Sunrise never get mentioned in these things? 1928 had *two* Best Picture winners.
Can someone tell me what the hell Kramer vs Kramer is? I had never heard of the thing until now, how did it beat Alien and ESPECIALLY Apocalypse Now??
Miguel Pereira it's a good movie, but not nearly as good as those two.
This was SO COOL!! I love musical theater so my favorites are obviously West Side Story and Chicago but thanks for posting this it's amazing to watch how film has changed throughout the years
These videos are so wonderful and I imagine they take a great deal of time to make
I watched All Quiet On the Western Front and the end killed me inside.
You gotta love how certain faces appear again and again in these movies.
Very nice work! Enjoyable. Made me want to watch an old movie!
I could watch 'Gone With The Wind' over and over and over and over again.
since I'm a 1990's guy, these are for me worth winners:
1990: Goodfellas (Dances w/ Wolves 2nd)
1991: The Silence of the Lambs
1992: Unforgiven
1993: Schindler's List
1994: Forrest Gump/Pulp Fiction/ Shawshank Redemption (They'll first because 1994 is the best year of films)
1995: Braveheart
1996: English Patients (but Fargo was my favorite of them)
1997: Titanic
1998: Saving Private Ryan (Life is Beautiful 2nd, American History X 3rd if nominated, Shakespeare in Love 4th)
1999: American Beauty
2000: Gladiator
2001: Lord of the RIngs: Fellowship of the Ring (A beautiful mind 2nd)
2002: Lord of the RIngs: Two Towers (The Pianist 2nd, Gangster of New York 3rd, Chicago 4th)
2003: Lord of the RIngs: Return of the King
2004: Million Dollar Baby
2005: Brokeback Mountain (Munich 2nd, Crash 3rd)
2006: The Departed
2007: No Country for Old Men/There will be Blood (both were great)
2008: The Dark Knight (if nominated, Slumdog Millionaire 2nd)
2009: Avatar/Inglorious Basterds (Hurt Locker 2nd)
2010: Inception (The Social Network 2nd, 127 hours 3rd, King Speech 4th)
2011: The Artist/Hugo (both were great)
2012: Life of Pi (Django Unchained 2nd, Argo 3rd)
2013: Gravity (one of the greatest technicalities ever, 12 years a slave 2nd)
2014: Birdman (HM: Whiplash, Boyhood, Grand Budapest Hotel, Nightcrawler & Interstellar not nominated?)
2015: Mad Max Fury Road (Spotlight 2nd)
+Dwayne Wade Agreed with everything you said except Avatar being better than The Hurt Locker and Mad Max being better than Spotlight. I thought the only competition against Spotlight this year was The Revenant.
Dwayne Wade I'd take A beautiful mind over LOTR , Pianist over Two Towers.I'd take Inglorious Basterds over Hurt locker any day most overrated movie ever.Life of Pi is kinda overrated Argo was fine for best picture Django was good too.2014 was so messy so many good movies personally probably would put Whiplash or Gone Girl/The imitation game and Boyhood was good even Birdman is fine.
2015 Mad Max Fury Road really?
Gravity really, is boring af
i was fucking mad when spotlight won over the the big short revenant and mad max. I will never let that go
Taxi Driver > Rocky
Every man knows that truth except garbage oscars.
VictorNFN I love Rocky but Taxi Driver was better and superb acting too by Robert D.
I've seen 44/87
This is so cool... Thanks for making this!
Loved this video! Reminds me of why I love movies. Some really memorable scenes.
Lmao most of these have a social message/are biopics/are about show business while No Country for Old Men is about a dude who finds some illegal drug money.
94dfk1 No Country is fucking amazing
JuFro743 defenetly agree ,i love that movie ,and Javier Bardem acting is very very strong ,Anton cigurt
94dfk1 are you an idiot. The movie is nothing about the drugs and the killings maybe if you had a brain you'd realize that
JuFro743 greatest movie of 2007
Very well compiled, movie history in a nutshell.
Thanks, you even made these best picture so boring to miss.
I really love your video, you're doing an amazing job ! (i don't know if i use the right terms but it's...wow ! I love your work)
Just once I like to see an animated movie be nominated for best picture, and win it.
They have an award for that, called Best Animated Feature.
Up got nominated 2010 y'know
Beauty and the Beast got nominated too, as well as Toy Story 3
All these great movies...and then there's Crash...
Caleb Guice Gigi and The Greatest Show On Earth are worse. Lol
Gigi won when Vertigo wasn't even nominated while The Greatest Show on Earth won when Singin' in the Rain wasn't even nominated.
I still can't understand how the hell ARGO won.
Amy Elliott-Dunne Kid,go watch a Fellini film and then we'll talk. All the other nominees were better than Argo.
Agreed. Django >>>
Because Argo Fuck Yourself.
ForceMaximus84 That's a pretty smart line,but that still doesn't clarify anything.
Lol It doesn't have to.
This wil be the list of films I will go through the next months. Thanks
Could've had a better clip for Forrest Gump but it's still a great compilation.
Jack Nicholson is on fire with the Academy. Same with Dustin Hoffman, Marlon Brando, and Russell Crow.
Thanks! this is great!
Brilliant video!
Citizen Kane!
Is there going to be an update to include Spotlight?
Saw it on 9GAG came here to give you a LIKE WELL DONE Best movie montage I've ever seen :D
such a good video! Thank you for uploading
can u please update this list. Thank you
Chicago instead of the Pianist. No Country For Old Men instead of There Will Be Blood. What a shame.
dzeikobb To be fair, it's not easy to decide between no country for old men and there will be blood, even though I do agree that there will be blood is better.
I know :(
dzeikobb no country for old man is amazing ,i realy love that movie ,for me there will be blood not that good ,Its too long ,its just very strong performence by lead actor
A few films in the naughties haven't stood the test of time. Which isn't that long. No Country for Old Men isn't one of them.
hey now! i love There Will Be Blood but there was NO shame in "losing" to No Country which was - along with TWBB - one of the best films of the last 20 years.
Biggest Oscar best picture disappointment. When Saving Private Ryan lost best picture to Shakespeare in Love.
And how The Big Lebowski wasn't nominated that year.
+JMoney R. The main reason is due to the fact that Big Lebowski was actually disliked by critics when it first came out. They thought it was not as good as there last film Fargo and they just felt that the film was a massive disappointment. But now it is universally loved and has a cult status.
+James Galetti I thought The Big Lebowski was not even worthy of a nomination. Very boring. Thats just me though.
+xxeugenioxxx It's a complicated movie. It's more or less about nothing. But that nothingness of it is what makes it a great movie.
I think it should've won Actor Awards for Jeff Bridges and John Goodman(who btw doesn't even have a goddamn nomination yet)
I agree with what you said about the two acting awards. I really should rewatch The Big Lebowski, because everybody seems to love it. I'll check it out again.
Really love this video 😍
Thank you for this. Got me subscribed
Is it bad that I've only heard of 35 of these films and have only actually seen 5 or 6 of them?
James Quinonez yes. Watch more movies
Jon Bezy I'm trying, darnit! Also, a lot of these movies just don't look like the kind of movies I prefer to watch.
James Quinonez What kind of movies do you prefer to watch?
not at all , most of these movies are stupid musicals which are too long `and boring
azooz abood There are like 6 musicals there. How is that "the most of them"?
La La Land (2016)... oh shit wait, wrong card
wow. i enjoyed this! if it's not too much, can you please make "every best actress" video?
love this!
BOYHOOD should've won best picture last year...
+Alif Abdul Aziz (aliflostfat) Whiplash
ikr! but i also like Grand Budapest Hotel
+Alif Abdul Aziz No,Birdman deserved it.
***** Great movie,but Oscar Bait
montimilian1 Exactly
still can't believe no Apocalypse Now
+Ben Eustace Its only oscar winners, though Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece.
and shawshank redemption
+joe symptons well, that was propably the hardest year ever. forrest gump, shawshank and pulp fiction.... i would give it to pulp fiction but it was probably because of the boxoffice that forrest won.
+joe symptons pulp fiction!
+Andre Silva I would give it to the Shawshank Redemption, but that's just me. The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies of all time.
I think A Beautiful Mind and 12 Years A Slave are the best of the modern time Oscar winners.
Good job!
Was this a colgate commercial? Damn, Oscar is crazy white!
the academy is a bunch of old white guys so it makes sense
I think Saving Private Ryan should've won in 1998.
Happy to say I've seen them all. :)
enjoyed watching this impressive movie review
Saving Private Ryan is way better than Shakespeare in Love how it won is mind boggling
same as crash
saving private ryan is better than shakespeare in love, but shakespeare in love deserved an oscar way more than crash did.
The Thin Red Line is better than both,
How Shakespeare In Love won over Saving Private Ryan nobody will know.
Pretty much everybody with a little bit of inside hollywood knowledge knows why...Harvey Weinstein the producer of the film spent 5 millons dollars campaining the film(while independent ones spend 250k or big films spend 2 millions),by holding parties with members of the academy a huge number of screenings to influence the thinking of the voters and even maybe more dirtier tactics...This is just an example how corrupt and unimportant the oscars are for true film lovers
Wonderful!
So many movies I have to watch!
Any one see the moonlight Steve Harvey thing yet?
Spoilers for some of them.
+clevelandphil It's funny how everyone who has never seen Gone With the Wind (including me) has been spoiled by its most famous quote.
+Esteban Álvarez that's not the ending tho
Luke sol I see.
Nah, I mean, I know I may still enjoy it. Just because I know he leaves and says he doesn't give a damn about her doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy everything that happens before that. I'm just saying, you know?
Man you gotta love all of 'em!
Taxi driver, Apocalypse Now, The Pianist and Seven should have won over Rocky, Kramer vs. Kramer, Chicago and Braveheart imo.
But at least three of them got the Palme d'Or.
Two Towers should have won instead of Chicago
+bread_n_butter
Two Towers wasnt even nominated i think, but i 100% agree with you.
Lt. Col. Frank Slade It was nominated for best picture but wasn't nominated in best director category, which was another mistake
bread_n_butter
ah, yes, i remember something being wrong with the nominations Two Towers and Fellowship got ;)
Two Towers should've won, along side best director, Chicago was awful
+bread_n_butter Chicago just made money = best picture.
The pianist or Two towers.
+Judge Dredd yep, Pianist was fantastic too
I don't understand how Crash won that year, that movie is terrible it doesn't even deserve the nomination, other that did not deserve the award was the hurt locker
+montimilian1 Crash definitely didnt deserve the award, but the Hurt Locker for sure did.
+xxeugenioxxx Inglorious Basterds was better
yeah, but you cant expect a tarantino film such as inglourious basterds to win a best picture award, c'mon let's be realistic here
xxeugenioxxx They could've at least given him Best Director.
Otherwise,if the Oscars would really try to award the BEST movies:
Reservoir Dogs should've at least been nominated for Best Picture in 1992(seriously that movie is a masterpiece)
Pulp Fiction should've won or at least get beaten by Shawshank Redemption instead of Forrest Gump.
Kill Bill Vol1&2 should've been nominated.
Inglorious should've won.
Hateful Eight should've been nominated.
For Pulp Fiction,Inglorious and Hateful Eight,Tarantino should've won best director.
i agree
Bravo! Such gems! And oh to think of all the greats who could not share this Oscar... Citizen Kane, Raging Bull, The Killing Fields, Shawshank Redemption, Saving Private Ryan, Brokeback, Amour... Alas aim for the moon so one may still land among the stars of excellence :)
Just awesome !!!
Crash is probably the worst movie to win best picture. Don't get me wrong the movie is okay, but it ain't best picture quality.
From 2008 until 2012 its the worst movies of all.
+Flavio Rodrigues Nolan & Tarantino deserved the Oscar those years.
+César Acebes true, i cant understand, it looks like the academy ignores nolan, and im not even talking about tarantino. inglourious basterds and django beats thoose anytime
100%
+Flavio Rodrigues
You probably havent even seen 70% of the movies on this list, there are much worse BP winners than the ones from 2008 to 2012....
I've seen tons of them. But even if there are, between 2008 and 2012 was so bad, all those movies didn't deserve and where very weak compared to the other years.
Very cool video.
I love how No Country for Old Men is just silent when it comes up compared to all the other ones that have soundtracks playing and/or have imagery encapsulating that movie.
nice job
@3:05 Wide screen Cinescope, Panavision or whatever format got popular, its such a contrast from the square aspect ratio the year before that.
I have seen a few best picture winners in my life and the movie that has had the biggest impact on me is No Country for Old Men. So damn gritty!
Us film nuts appreciate your effort. Thanks for it!!
