Hey mate,
I love how open minded you are to different cars, and if you make a mistake you totally own it!
For this one, the pink LJ Torana is absolutely a factory colour- but the bonnet (hood?) was pink also. It was called “Strike Me Pink” and a true 70’s colour!
I’d however say that a lot of the cars you featured were not common here either.
The Maserati, Jensen and European brands were never sold here.
They are just imports, for a minority of enthusiasts. But certainly not Australian.
It’s funny to see how much time is given to cars worth $200 compared to cars worth a lot more, without knowing!
The orange SS Torana would be worth half a million dollars. And it got 5 seconds lol.
And the pink LJ Torana would be worth even more.
But that’s the fun thing eh!
Great job and love your videos as they are one of the very few that aren’t one of the millions of staged videos on youtube.
Love your honesty as it’s what makes you stand out from the fake staged Millenials 👍
you are wrong. Jensen were sold here but not in significant numbers. I remember seeing the Jensen stand at the Melbourne Motor show. Taylorspeed in Adelaide were the importers in the late 60s. not so sure about Maserati but suspect you are right and those that came here were privately imported.
"how fast is it?"
"16km/h, downhill with the wind behind it"
Classic 😂
also known as a "Rolls Kanardly"... 😉🐨🇦🇺
lol that was gold
..........and overinflated tyres! 😆
The pink is a GMH factory special colour, it is called "Strike me Pink" code is 1A017 it was only Available for the Torana GTR XU1 an HQ Monaro GTS from memory.
Dave Norman, back in the mid-seventies my dad was a mechanic at a Zupps dealership on the northside of Brisbane. He got to drive trade-ins home so he could give them a test run to see if anything was needing attention. He came home in Statesman Devilles, GTS Monaros, and other cars. But the one that sticks in my memory was a Pink XU1 Bathurst Special. Our neighbour from across the road would often look after his brother's cars. He had an L34 Torana, and a fully-bombed A9/X. It had tunnel rams and twin four-barrel double pumpers...I was a young teenager and always hassled him to take me for a blat around the streets.
My neighbour bought a new '63 EJ Holden Hydramatic back in the day and it was a similar (factory) pink colour. It was a talking point with the rest of the neighbours as it was thought to be an awful colour and I have never seen another.
I never see any HQ that colour
@@idbruce Wasn't that earlier pink a real pastel colour? I seem to remember a lot of those earlier paints were a bit subdued.
Strike me pink is rather lame when compared to the bright purple colour, of the same era, that GMH called "Barney's Shirt".
Us Aussies are very proud, anything Australian and we will watch. Keep up the good work
Yeah, I could watch this guy reacting to our odd ways on an ongoing basis.
Note. In Australia, it is illegal to deface any currency. However, those coins dont look damaged.
the wagon at the start i believe is a nissan stagea
Love the enthusiasm, glad to see you're having so much fun.
Glad to see the Suzuki MightyBoy. Yay.
Used to be one in Wyong with a supercharged v8 stuffed in it.
@@Blanchy10 haha 😂, wasn't their some guy in the nineties who had a V8 in a Swift for hillclimb or time attack?
We found an especially wild MightyBoy in the Summernats video! ruclips.net/video/8r4rqMH44hs/видео.html
The best thing about you bringing out new videos is you're bringing out new videos.
I can't wait to see his reaction to a Holden Crewman
The reason your channel is doing so well so quickly is because of how much of a good bloke you are. Thanks for reminding us all about how catchy enthusiasm and joy is for our love of cars.
I love hearing that, thanks!
David Brown Tractors and Aston Martin cars. The DB series for David Brown.
Oh man i missed you turning up. Mine is the black P76 next to the force 7.
Oh nice!
@@gbsailing9436 I used to put 4 mates in the boot for the drive in.
Yeah, don't worry about upsetting Aussies over your Ford/Mercury Capri comment, we thought they were crap too! Glad you finally caught up with your beloved Sundowner. Loved seeing the Moke and the P76's!
Ahh, the p76! Wasn’t it designed but engineers without consulting any designers (?) it was definitely definitely ‘function first’, and they thought it was going to be the winner . But who puts a 44 gallon drum in the boot of the car!! A Leyland Australian engineer.. ! That’s who !
Found an Escort Sundowner ruclips.net/video/b8yt2tGzJEo/видео.html and an XD Sundowner too! ruclips.net/video/dLW_vB6ummw/видео.html
3:13 the Mini Moke is a Classic Mini with a different body - they were produced as 'little wheelers' in England and Australia until the late 60's, then got 13" wheels like the one you saw in the early 70s. Kept being produced in Australia until '82. That one is a Californian - top of the line with front discs, a 1275 engine, sunraysia wheels and a 'Roo Bar'. Mine aren't factory Californians, but fortunately the bodies are the same, so I've restored them as though they were. Great fun to tear around in. People look at me like I'm crazy when it's raining, though.
Keep up the good work, mate. Sounds like you're having a ball!
@@gbsailing9436 Yeah, done that before, was a hoot. Damn, that brings back some memories, haven't been there since about '87.
Who remembers the bumper stickers that usually took pride of place on the rear panel..."Moking Is An Elf Hazzard"... 🤩
Came with a denim roof
@@grandy2875 Most Australians would not know of reference to RILEY ELF , in UK
Hey mate love that you're loving Aus and our car culture. That white "commodore" is a HSV Holden Special Vehicles GTS. Pretty much a factory modified Commodore. Walkinshaw worked with HSV sometimes to add power. I think the biggest pack was a W427 which is around 427 kilowatts at the engine. Please correct me if I'm wrong as well ima Holden bloke but don't know everything.
Oh and it's a vf model
Btw to the best of my knowledge Nissan stegea's are pretty much R34 wagons
Slight correction that's a VE not a VF
@@mickmammen7168 oh true thanks mate
Walkinshaw Performance /HSV is pretty much the same thing. Headed by Ryan Walkinshaw. The badge was used for Supercars when they ran a side team to HRT, and kept going with the change of Walkinshaw business to enhancing other brands and re-engineering left hand drive Ram trucks and Camaro and now tricking up VW Amarok.
The WP badge just had a different level to the HSV.
Australia has Japanese cars because they also have RHD vehicles. Could also be why America didn't embrace them as much.
nah just tariffs
I don't know anything about cars and they don't interest me. yet here I am watching this series. It's nice watching someone passionate about something.
I love hearing that!
Same here!
"Not the Dart" refers to an old Yellow Pages ad. Quick search and you'll find it! Also, the only people I see driving the Chrysler 300's are the highway patrol!

I am so glad you have found a Leyland P76 and Force 7
Yes the commenters tipped me off to the Force 7. If I hadn't read about it I never would have known.
@@WastelandFirebird Even more rare is the Leyland P76 station wagon. Goodness only knows who owns it.
All part of the Leyland mistory
The colors of the LC XU1's were unique. Dolly Yellow, Plumdinger (purple), Strike me Pink, Linamint, (lime green) and Rally Red. The 70's had cool colors. Pity you didn't check out the old Holdens. I have an FJ. Love your vids. Keep them coming.

Ute is short for coupe utility. Late model Ford Falcon are a tray body. Technically, not a ute as the back half is not joined to the front half. A proper ute has the rear sides joined to the cabin.

I have a surprise for you about the 2 British Jensen Interceptors. They have Italian design, but under bonnet is the big surprise! The were designed with big American V8s! ….6.3 Litre (?). And were some all wheel drive ones (ff) ? But it’s my dad’s favourite 😍 car:)
Loving your discovery of Australian car culture, and I’m not that into cars, but you bring memories back for me anyway, enjoy your videos and your enthusiasm.
Great Vlog Mate, You will like the Valiant show they made some very good Cars, also look up Falcon GT HO very well sorted out cars for there Day and raced extensively in Australia and New Zealand You need to get to Bathurst the great race this Year You will love it unreal Track lots of History cheers Michael Svenson Australia.
I thought this was going to be just another series of ‘put-down’ videos by another American blow-in but I was wrong. You’ve done a great job, and I ended up feeling like I’d done the trips and the car shows with you. Thanks for your enthusiasm and appreciation of our way of doing car stuff.
I do a lot of put-downs too, but there's so much good stuff here that it's hard not to be enthusiastic!
So much fun in parking lot! 😂
Really awesome to see the 2cv at the end of the vid, my grandpa was a lifelong Citroën fanatic and took part in the raids through the 80s and 90s.
AMC shipped their cars in knock down kits to Australia through the Aussie company AMI (Australian Motor Industries) and were branded as Rambler. You could buy an Aussie assembled Rambler Hornet, Rebel, Javelin, AMX and Matador. Some were even used as official government vehicles. One Pacer and one Gremlin right hand drive made it to Australia and still exists. All Aussie Ramblers had the AMI logo. AMI also imported Toyota's who had bought them out by1985
That's wild! And it's funny that they didn't make them right-hand-drive.
@@WastelandFirebird the ones made here were RHD. But there have been some private imports as well.
@@jgsheehan8810 Yeah, I think AMI did the conversions here. The interier trim levels of the Aussie versions differed a bit from the American ones. Also their sales ran for an extra year in Australia....
@@gravelsandwich yes AMI used the same standard carpet and vinyl as they were putting into the Triumph sedans. Also the same paint colours were used across Rambler & Triumph, and I think Toyota
1:21 that's a Nissan Stagea, later version of the car at 13:26 (roughly 2002-2007). All-Wheel Drive V6 Wagon (possibly a Straight 6, depends on year). Japanese Import, not sold here domestically. I have one if you want to check one out in person :)

That wasn't a "holden commodore" bud, it was a HSV GTS.
Commodores and falcons had performance side companies, HSV and FPV, think of them like what AMG is to Mercedes.
Also the Maloo is part of that also, HSV maloo not Holden Maloo
Welcome to Australia, hope you are enjoying living here, if you can travel around, each state brings so much adventure! You need to go to summernats in Canberra :-)
I will be there!
There was a sticker you could buy in the 80's that stated "moking is not a wealth hazard".
Love the yellow Holden Maloo, the word Maloo derives from an Aboriginal word means "Thunder"....
What a great name!
another enthusiastic video 👍, glad you had fun 😀
I'm having so much fun making these!
So many of the cars you've shown played a part in my life. Very cool. I'd started a long list with timestamps but gave up halfway through. There were too many anecdotes.
I think I read a couple of them before you edited the comment? Those stories were amazing!
@@WastelandFirebird Hehe. One in particular was the farmer who'd come in and see dad at his machinery hire place. He drove a Mighty Boy and they'd joke that it could fit two 44-gallon drums in the back...so long as you didn't want to drive anywhere.
Great video and good to see that you got a short glance at my dad's 59 red caddilac convertible

Suzuki Mighty Boy's, also called mobile Eskies. Fill the back with ice and beer and off to the beach, the footy, or into the mountains - party time. Or it was, now of course we are a bit older, not necessarily wiser, but more cautious about drink driving.
Glad you got to see a Jensen Interceptor. A friend of my ex had one in the late '70's and the cops had Chargers............... he did a runner from a traffic stop waaay out west NSW and the Charger threw a piston chasing on the highway. He went back because he didn't want the cops stranded in the middle of nowhere - they went easy on him, but the first question they had was 'What the hell are you driving?" because nothing they knew could outrun the Police Highway Patrol Charger at the time.....ooops!
I love these wild stories from the old days!
I didn't realise you were living here, mete, welcome to the Big Relax 👍

P76, designed to carry a $60,000 merino ram in the boot (trunk to you), and half a ton of hay on the back seat and still have room for 3 kids. Great car badly built, those that survive are legends.
Rambler Javelins were assembled here (around 260 of them) and we even had AMXs (24 i think) built from CKD kits.
AMXs are the best!

The Suzuki Mighty Boy was also used by Dominos Pizza as a delivery vehicle. They were slow but cheap to buy and run, so when they were crashed by the drivers it wasn't a big loss.

My friend, you have seen the car of the gods: a pink and black XU-1 Torana. You have been blessed.
Yes that Torana was made pink and only a hand full where ever made i think less than 10, also that yellow look a like SANDMAN was actually a 1980 WB Holden panelvan the last ever made SANDMAN PANELVAN was the 1979 HZ SANDMAN PANELVAN.
Keep up the good work mate love your videos.

That colour is factory, it’s called Orchid, it was reasonably common with Toranas but my folks ordered a HQ wagon in Orchid which was pretty rare. If only ten Toranas were ever painted in Orchid I reckon I saw all of them.

ayyy, I remember those old Sydney buses!
You can see them, and ride them, at the Sydney Bus Museum!
Ahh the legendary Mini Moke, They were a BMC car that Australians loved, the UK built 14,000 of them in the 60's but Australia built 26,000 of them and kept selling them into the 80, Portugal built 10,000 and sold them into the 90's, Great little beach cars. Super dangerous too.
I remember as a kid I went on holiday with the parents up to somewhere around Broome and you could hire Mini Mokes for the length of your stay, and you didnt even need to show a license to drive 'em. Crazy little golf carts.

You the man Firebird, good to see you're enjoying yourself down here! also a Brown Ferrari? What in the f***? Never knew such a thing existed lol
Meteor was the Australian assembled Laser version of the Mazda 323 but Meteor was used for the sedan non hatchback versions and station wagon versions of the Laser.
Ford eventually called them all Lasers for their version of the 323.
I think Ford owned the Meteor name from a fifties or so Mercury Meteor but not sold here.
Leyland manufactured almost 60 Force 7's, they expected to perform well at Bathurst but the company went broke. All but 10 of them were crushed. Apparently a couple of P76 wagons also escaped the crusher.
The P76 surviving station wagon is road registered and referred to as one of one surviving. In a few RUclips vids.
And for your next quest wasteland firebird find the first ute ever built. Hint it's a Ford and was made here. Story goes a farmers wife wanted a vehicle for farm work that you could also rock up to church on sundays. Very few left, hard to find. Also all Ford day coming up in sa on October 30th to be held at oakbank race course. Should be able to find it on face back
What an awesome event! So many cool cars!
I wanted to mention from a previous video where you asked why Australian highways don’t have a yellow dividing line.
We used to have yellow lines back in the 70’s, but because colour blind drivers had difficulty seeing yellow on a black road, the federal government changed it to white lines only.
I’m suprised America hasn’t done the same thing!
Thanks for another video too!
Keep up your enthusiasm 😎
They still have yellow lines in the Snowies, usually they are where the tar seems to change to a low melting point (soft) tar.
@@r1learner178 thank you, I did not know that. Haven’t been to the snow since I was a little kid lol

The Ford Meteor is a Mazda 626. The Ford Sundowner and Holden Sandman were called "shaggin' wagons".
Most had a transfer on the rear window saying "If this vehicle's rockin' don't bother knockin'" or Once a king always a king, once a knight is never enough" or
"My girlfriend can't wrestle, but you should see her box".
