Boats on Wheels: The Amphibious Vehicles of Brittany on Land and Water

Amphibious vehicles harvesting mussels in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel). The tidal range is particularly pronounced here at over 10 meters. Accordingly, the sea retreats far at low tide.
Instead of launching smaller ships on trailers, amphibious vehicles are used to harvest mussels in Brittany, in northern France. The Bouchot mussels grow on ropes wrapped around wooden stakes that are partially exposed at low tide. The wheels can be retracted while floating and the propeller can be lowered.

An intelligent use for that design. When I was 16 and surfing Huntington Beach, 40 yrs ago, one of these came ashore near us in 3-5 ft surf. We were amazed by it. Back then it was a Navy or marine research vehicle. These days a similar one is used to haul tourists around the Embarcadero in San Francisco. I don't think it even touches the water.
