    I am definitely team Phase Beam. Since going strictly to them, I've never once had to recharge my own shields. Granted, it doesn't do as much damage, but it's still very effective, and an absolute beast when fully upgraded, and the range is fantastic.

      I've been using the Phase Beam with a Hauler so in any fight you're pretty much the hardest ship to take down. I'm also running rocket launchers just to finish off some enemies and because it looks cool AF

    • @Paladin1034
      @Paladin1034 2 года назад +1

      Yep. I open with phase beam, drain shields, then swap to photon to get them to half health, wait for the shield recharge which normally pops immediately, then snapshot rockets. GGs. It works on any ship, with only basic modules and no upgrades, and just happens to be the order in which they're toggled. Super easy

    My fully upgraded X class infra knife has DPS stats of over 60k and over 40k. It has great range and heat dispersion, it's already destroyed enemy ships well before getting anywhere close to overheating. It's so good it's the only weapon I have installed besides the base photon cannon that I can't remove.

    Before watching, I went with the infra-knife and phase beam on pretty much everything. The phase beam is pretty weak, but it's great for new saves because of the shield restoring factor.
    I just wish we could get rid of the photon cannon. I HATE having to cycle past it during combat.

    Interesting. Gotta try out the Infra Knife again. Ive been an almost exclusively Positron Ejector user for ages. Post nerf I found it was still fully capable of ship vs ship still, I love it for straffing planets for materials. I’m also older and have slow reactions and crappy eyesight and the spread of the positron ejector helps mitigate that a lot.
    Great review! Thumbs up. Gonna try an Infra Knife tonight.

    I think it's important to consider where you are in the game. The rocket launcher is pretty decent as a hull-finisher early in the game, when you can't afford a lot of slots for upgrade items and won't have ready access to S-class upgrade modules. The lack of upgrades begins to tell when it becomes practical to devote more slots to weapon modules.

  • @p1psychoticprankster

    It's also good to note that ship type effects weapon damage as well. I have a fully upgraded solar ship that has around the same damage as yours, but I also have a fighter fully upgraded that can erase everything with the standard photon cannon sporting about 7600 attack rating in the info screen

    Infraknife is definitely my favorite. I've got perfect or near perfect mods and it absolutely shreds.
    On one of my solars though, with 6 perfect cyclotron and photon cannon mods and then rockets it's absolutely lethal. With the order of the weapon swap it's Cyclotron > Rocket > Photon cannon and almost nothing lasts long enough for me to use the cannon. Shields are shredded and then those rockets just doink them into oblivion.

    I find a combo is great. I use an upgraded photon to take the shields down super fast, then as soon as the shield is down, quick switch to positron and it usually takes one shot, maybe two and they are gone. Then quickly switch to the photon for the next enemy.
    If they are still at far range and not close, I sometimes just stay on photon after the shields are down, because the positron works best at closer range. 👍🏻

    Intra-knife just smokes 'em. Used to use positron with rockets, but now have changed all ships over to intra-knife. I load 8 intra-knife modules and then go to anomaly and buy all hyperdrive C class modules I can store. I then install all the intra-knife modules (8) to find the best stats. I keep track of which install number had the best stats, then reload. If module install #3 and module #8 had the best stats, I keep track of those numbers and reload. Then I install (2) hyperdrive, (1) intra knife, (4) hyperdrive, then (1) intra-knife. I jump back in my ship to save. I then exit and destroy all the C class hyper drive modules. Rinse repeat. I get a lot of chromatic metal and wire looms that way. Enjoyed the video!

    My first ever playthrough in 2016 immediately helped me realise the rocket launcher was pointless as a weapon so, since then, upon finding my first Radiant Pillar, I immediately dismantle the rocket launcher for the condensed carbon etc ingredients.
    However, I've used the (upgraded) photon cannon constantly virtually from NMS start. So, I'm thrilled to watch this - and I'm checking out the Intra-knife Accelerator immediately!!! Thank you BB!

    Only downside I ran into with this update is that our shields seem to no longer recover, unlike the enemy. Use to not have to deal with shield upgrades, now I have to install at least 3 s-class just to make certain I'm not melted even against one target. Use to run with just the cyclotron ballista, now it's intra-knife with a phase beam.

    Since the first time I installed the positron ejector it's been my favorite weapon. If I wanted to have fun I'd use the infra knife accelerator. Someone told me told me the only reason to use the Positron Ejector is if you can't shoot good. I told him to read my post. I've always said I can't shoot good and that's why I use the Positron Ejector. Even now my latest Positron Ejector does around 23k damage. Before the change It would do around 42k - 45k damage. I also like it because it is short range. Keeps me from hitting more unintended targets in freighter battles. When I do the Nexus pirate missions it's very rare that the pirates even reach my ship unless they're engulfed in flames and exploding. It's the only weapon I've been able to take out 4 or 5 pirates at a time with.

      Another strength of the Ejector lies in its dive-mining capabilities. With its wide field of fire, you can strip large amounts of resources from the planetary surface. Best dual use of all weapons!

      @@achtsekundenfurz7876 I just did that to get a bunch of ferrite dust on my latest expeditions save in the next galaxy. I got enough to finish building a dioxite base with around 65k units of storage. I've got the positron ejector upgraded so that I can almost shoot continuously without overheating.

    • @jorgeriveramarin891
      @jorgeriveramarin891 2 года назад

      Update: After using the Intra-Knife for a while, I can report definitively that the Positron is still superior - and it's not close.
      The Intra-Knife's damage goes down a bit after the shields go down, and enemy ships have the chance to move around and make you tail them a bit.
      Even with just four S module upgrades and 2 X ones with just 1 modification, the Positron dramatically outperforms the Intra-Knife. It kills so fast in its optimal damage range, there's really no comparison.
      It's not that the Intra-Knife isn't good/fun. It is! But the Positron is still king.

  • @logophobe
    @logophobe 2 года назад

    This is a really good breakdown! Very comprehensive.
    I would add that I feel it short-changes the Rocket Launcher a bit. Like you mentioned with other weapons, the damage stat is misleading; I've found that it destroys most unshielded ships (except for Sentinels) with a single hit. This makes it a great combination weapon with something with a high shield damage weapon like the Cyclotron Ballista. Fire that first to drain shields, quickly switch to the launcher, and engagements are over in seconds. You could do the same with something like the Positron Ejector but rockets have the advantage of range.
    I also find the shield recharge of the Phase Beam invaluable for extended dogfights. I tend to equip that and the Rocket Launcher on "cargo" ships where I want more slots kept open for trade items (but still need to hold my own in things like freighter rescues) and put more slots into upgrading the Infra-Knife and Cyclotron on dedicated "combat" ships where I want to maximize dps.

Altho the phase beams are definately not as stronk as they once were, they keep my shields healthy and as soon as I pop a shield I can swap over to rockets, finish em off then swap back to beams for the next target. My gullwing hotrod fighter uses cylcotron ballista and positron ejector, and my solar sailer was set up for infraknife but also uses photon cannon, aiming for maximum dakka! all three playstyles are fun and work to make my three primary ships each feel unique.

    Interesting and informative. My own practice with starship weaponry can best be described as minimalist - thinking being that with several weapons, one wastes valuable time dialling between choices looking for the "right' weapon for a particular circumstance. Better just to be quicker on the draw and have a good Rate Of Fire with an IMperfect weapon. Plus all the space saved that can go to other gear, .
    I favor the Cyclotron Ballista, which can have a very very good rate of accurate fire (which offsets its reduced effect when shields go down), PLUS you don't have to worry about refuelling or recharging. I retain and upgrade the Photon Cannon as a back-up, just in case (You Never Know). Also usually add a Rocket Launcher - because it's easy to build, and I just like Fireworks + Big Booms. To each their own. :)

    Wow. Very interesting, thanks for the time you put in researching this. Prior to Outlaws, the rocket launcher with upgraded large tubes was my favourite, but since Outlaws the cool down takes way too long and as you illustrate here, the damage is not so good. I never liked the positron ejecter because by the time you get close enough for it to be at its best, it is hard to keep the sights on an enemy ship as they are usually past you quickly. Looks like the cyclotron, intraknife and photon will be my choices, and I can remove the others which as you point out, take up space and get confusing in the heat of battle.

    Before I've always went with the positron ejector, but now I'm really liking the infra-knife accelerator. When its upgraded fully, its dps is insane and it satisfyingly destroys opponents in a way that the positron ejector cannot compare to.

    I have not found much of a change, the Positron Ejector still melts everything almost instantly. I use the Phase Beam for farming freighters and asteroids and I have one ship with the Photon Canon just because you can't get rid of it.

  • @dagoelius

    Use them all and just rapid cycle them as you fire. No heat buildup atall and ship to ship battles lasts seconds even in a hauler.

    I'm more an infraknife person. Tail in close and obliterate shield and ship in one go. You have to be a good aimer that is to be said.
    It's like in WW2 they switch to the 20-30mm cannons at close range.

    This is very helpful. I've personally just been using an upgraded photon cannon to knock down the shields and then I can one-hit most ships with the rocket launcher.

  • @Keldrath
    @Keldrath 2 года назад +1

    best choice imo is photon cannon to deal with shields then quick swap for a rocket launcher heavy hit to completely or nearly destroy the ship and just swap back to photon to deal with any remaining ship hp if there is any. Id say photon over cyclotron for shields just because the photon can do hull damage cleanup better if the rocket doesnt one shot.

    • @xj2736
      @xj2736 2 года назад

      thats a good idea too, right now I have the cyclotron to melt the shield and then I use the photon cannons, cant imagine something much quicker, but now I want to try the intra knife thanks to this video lol

    I run a loadout for each of my ships thus far. My shuttle and explorer thus far have a Photon Cannon and a Phase Beam. My Solar has a Photon Cannon, Phase Beam and a Rocket Launcher, my Hauler gets a Photon Cannon, Cyclotron Ballista and Rocket Launcher and my Fighter has the Photon Cannon, Cyclotron, and Infra Knife.
    I don't upgrade the Photon Cannon in anything because I mainly only use it as a back up weapon.
    My Hauler I have been turning into a flying tank that can still carry alot of stuff with an S class AND X class upgrade module for the shields plus the combo of heavy weapons for a one two punch and an S class pulse engine upgrade for a speed boost.

    The guide should really mention that rockets are almost always a one-shot kill against hull. I like Photon Cannon & Rockets, both weapons have good range so I can take a ship or two out much earlier in the fight than when I have to get to knife-fighting range.
