  • I've always wanted to get my hair cut at a barber shop somewhere around the world, but as a woman it's not very common in many countries to find a woman in a barber shop. But it has finally happened, and here in Egypt no less! Follow along and check out what a local barber shop in Egypt looks like, as well as getting a glimpse into Egyptian Coptic culture, some local food and all around Egyptian humor during the cut.
    Hey guys, welcome to the channel! My name's Gisselle, I'm a budget traveler and have been to 6 out of the 7 continents, visiting 20+ countries, living for some time in Sydney, Australia as well as in Saigon, Vietnam. I am currently living in Cairo, Egypt and exploring all this beautiful country has to offer while visiting nearby countries as well. I am a lover of language and a culturally curious lady just making my way through life one day at a time. I live to learn, I love to travel and explore, try new things and meet interesting people anywhere and everywhere in the world. Come along with me as I solo travel the globe and discover fascinating new places, try delicious local food, meet lovely people, and share a moment in time on this beautiful planet, our Earth.

    Yo! G! I was born in Egypt, moved to LA when I was nine years old, my Arabic is not bad. When I hear the somewhat East coast / Latin / smoothie of loveliness that is you speak Arabic, the hamsters that run the conveyor belt for my brain, trip, fall, and literally roll on the floor laughing with joy...I'm a budget traveler as well and was raised Coptic. You've opened my eyes to how the country is more progressive than I thought.

    I've been watching your videos in no particular order, and have been enjoying them! I know there are many differences in culture between the US and Egypt, particularly when it comes to men and women's interactions. I'd be interested to see more content featuring Egyptian women's lives, although it seems easier to make friends with men. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us!

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  27 дней назад +1

      Thank you! I think there is content like that out there, perhaps just search for Egyptian women's channels. As for my videos: most of my friends are male, I have always had more male friends in my life than women, long before coming to Egypt. The women that I do know here tend to live far away from me, so I don't see them as often. I will say, as a general statement, it is harder (at least for me) to make friends with the women here because they often speak less English than men (this is a GENERAL statement), they are also very often more shy than the men, which makes getting to know them harder. They also don't like to be on camera very often. They usually don't wander around as much or are not out as late as guys, so yeah, for those reasons, you don't see them as much on my channel. Also, my videos are vlogs, so me filming solo and showing things around Egypt. If you have noticed, not many (or maybe any) are about the lives of other people, at least not for long. That's harder to do, as it requires that person to accept me filming them in their personal space and private life.

      @@Gventures Thank you so much for taking the time to give such an extensive answer. I've got 5 brothers, so I tend to be very comfortable around men. And when I lived in Cameroon, my friends were men, because they were the other teachers at my school. I may have the chance to work at a university in Egypt, and if that happens, I'll have the chance to find out more!

      Haaaaa! Yes I know, I randomly saw that on RUclips as well! I was like, wtf?! Actually so my friend Alex (the barber) works at a hostel, so although it is really crazy and random, I am not surprised Kino found his way to Alex's barbershop, because it turns out he was staying at the hostel where Alex works (and where I stayed for 2 months before finding my apartment). So I'm really good friends with Alex, but it was so wild to see him in a video cutting Kino's hair, I didn't know he did that but I follow Kino and just randomly saw it on RUclips the other day (actually I saw it the same day I was going to get my hair cut at Alex's shop!). It is such a big world, but also so small 😅I think Kino has left now, he uploads pretty late I think (so he has a backlog of videos he uploads while he is traveling so he isn't rushed). Thanks, I've been living here for over a year and love it! What do you mean, what do I hope Egypt to be like in the future? And for Coptics? I'm not sure I understand your question. I hope for Egypt to continue progressing and be a successful and prosperous country, and for Copts to continue practicing their religion as they have been for a long time now, free from discrimination. They faced problems in the past but that was many, many centuries ago. Now Christians and Muslims live side by side here, without issues

  • @aallam2675
    @aallam2675 Год назад +3

    1-Jizya (which you refer to as religious taxation) is paid by wealthy Christians, for defense and production against enemies, its not paid by old or poor or Children. Muslims pays Zakah also each year and have to join the army and sometimes lose their life defending the land. Since now Christians drafted in the army they do not pay it.
    2- when Muslims conquered Egypt, Muslims guaranteed freedom of belief and allowed the Copts to practice their religion freely. For instance, Binyaameen (Benjamin), the Patriarch of the Coptic Church, had fled from the Romans due to their hatred of his beliefs. He fled for his life, fearing the Roman’s oppression and persecution against him and all other Christians. When ‘Amr ibn Al-‘Aas, , heard of this, he sent Binyaameen a letter, inviting him to come back under the protection of the Muslims. They gave him the freedom to supervise the Egyptian churches ( this has been told also by Pope Shenouda)
    3-Since you live in Egypt now its a good opportunity to learn more about Islam, not every thing you hear or read is true, hear from Muslims directly since you there.

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Год назад +3

      I have learned about Islam through my friends, I have many Muslim friends here in Egypt, as well as Coptic Christian friends. Not sure why you commented all this information, in the video I was simply stating how the practice of the Copts tattooing themselves originated, a very long time ago. Obviously things have changed. My Muslim and Christian friends are both friends with each other, I did not say anyone hated anyone else.

    Hello Gisselle, I have a lot to say on this video! as usual funny and entertaining and you laughed a lot in this video, very cool to see you happy with the very special haircut. What really made me comment today is the comments about Egyptian Coptic and Muslim history. We don't like distinguishing between Egyptians based on religion and we have no such a place is exclusive for Coptics or Muslims. This is very sensitive topic to raise with not enough knowledge and unfortunately you shared controversial and debatable information, and I have a lot to say here about your barber friend who is a very smart man and a very determined! There is no such neighborhood exclusively for Coptic Christians or for Muslims and we don't talk majority and minority! You can hear the Azan Muslim call for prayer from his shop I wonder why he told you this is a majority Coptic neighborhood and even if this is true there and I doubt that, we don't talk like this!! very strange claim and every Egyptian will understand what I am saying here. In my humble opinion if you need to know about the history or politics you have to make a serious discussion with well-educated Egyptians. FYI, a lot of Egyptian men dream about having US residency "I am sure you have noticed that many times" and the best way to make him close to a chance is to get an American girl friend and it is even much easier for those who can use the minority wild card!!! Bardon me for talking serious. Another important thing to mention, Egyptian Muslims and many Coptics too don't use the term Islamic conquering and the sentence forcing Christians to enter Islam 😮😮Please be careful while talking about what you may don't understand. It is a very different culture and very different beliefs than the west. It is a very long story too.

      It's hard to force anyone to do anything. But persecution obviously existed, and when your physical safety, or that of your children, is under threat, people will do many things. I suggest you read more about the history, I have, extensively, and know what I am talking about.

      @@Gventures thinking that you already know everything is not good dear. When muslims ruled Egypt Intermarriage was common between muslim arab men and Christian coptic women and of course their of spring were Muslims. Not all Egyptians were Christians some reserved their traditional old beliefs. Way before islam arab lived in Egypt especially the eastern desert for trading and after islam alot of arab migrated to egypt that made Muslims more than Christians.

      @@esra1463 Me disagreeing with you does not mean I think I know everything, I am sure you have the intelligence to be able to understand that concept. But I know for a fact there was persecution, and as I already said, that leads people to do many things they might not otherwise. This goes for many people around the world, not specifically Christians in Egypt. I know for a fact there are Egyptians that disagree with your opinion, because I have had this discussion with them before. And again, I have read a lot about the history here as well. That's not true at all, in Islam there is no such thing of forcing people to revert, bring me 1 evidence, you have no clue what you saying, in terms of religious taxes, and unlike any tax you pay in any part of this world, this is the minimum tax you would ever pay it's like 2.5% of you yearly income how much would that be? also along with that comes a lot of benefits, when you pay you don't join army, yet army would still defend you. so you pay this and you free to practice you religion and live your life, and under true Islamic laws there is no such taxes the only thing you pay is this we call ( جزية ) or Tribute and that's the only thing you need to pay to live under true Islamic country there is no such thing paying up to 50% of you total income like US or UK, check out waves of people in Europe, US and UK reverting to Islam because if you are someone truly searching for the truth and purpose of life, you would find all your answers in Islam, check out stories of a lot of people reverted recently and the reason they made this decision

      Bro I have been living here for 3 years and made a video about Coptic Christians and a brief history, I've done a lot of research and spoken to both Christians and Muslims here, sorry but we are just going to have to agree to disagree. I am not going to argue with you about this on the internet, and here you are preaching about how I would find all the answers and purpose in life in Islam. Let someone make their own decisions. I already have, and you are not going to convince me. It's incredible how much pushback there is when I mention a few negative things about the darker parts of history. Do you think it was all just rainbows and perfection? Every religion and every history has had it's good and bad parts. I am not saying living under Islamic rule as a non-Muslim was the worst thing that could happen, obviously there were much worse rulers to live under, just take a look at the Romans or later the crusades. I know people were able to live under relative peace under Muslim rule, but there was definitely some inequality as well as persecution. I know Muslims pay jizira but you should know it was certainly less than what non-Muslims were paying, you can look it up, it's very easy information to find, and I have spoken to Muslims who agree it was more. Anyway, like I said, I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree.

      @@BlackWhite-Da7lom I am well aware Islam exists and is an option if i want it. That is YOUR belief, not mine. Anyways, no I don't need to reference a thousand articles to back up what i am saying, because it wouldn't matter if I did anyways, and you and many other people have commented that it is not true, and many other people have commented that it is true, and I am not here to prove to anyone anything. They can look that up themselves, I did my research, but I didn't save on some file every single site, article, and historical papers where I got my information, nor am I going to spend hours looking it up again and sending it to you.
