Would it be possible for certain models to be undervolted out of the box and not have that show up in readings? As you mentioned in the video, the Zephyrus couldn't be pushed anywhere near the Scar III, but the results in CPU tests are more impressive even without any undervolt. The 17 inch Hero III (basically a Scar III with other design elements) that I own also has similar results to the Zephyrus here while I can't undervolt it further than -0.041 and have it fully stable. In other videos I've also seen people with the 17 inch Scar/Hero not being able to push it past -0.050-0.075 unlike the 15 inch version which tends to go far lower, which makes me wonder if it's just coincidence and silicon lottery or some hidden factory tweak.
Don't think so, at least I've never seen that. I've speculated in the past that maybe they buy better binned chips for the Zephyrus, so they already perform with less voltage but as a result can't undervolt as far. That's just speculation though, I have no idea.
Depends, the point is you can get it with lower spec too, but don't have to necessarily pair it with a GPU that's available today, could be an upgrade path with something far better 3-5 years away.
I have the scar III. In Shadow of the tomb raider, when I set gpu and cpu fan to 100% in manual mode, and with the latest driver, I get 90 frames in the highest setting in the built-in benchmark!
@@hyphed4196 zephyrus laptops overclock the gpu in turbo mode. you have to take that into account. I really want to overclock my scar III but I don't think it's worth the risk!
I might get higher FPS if I only run the highest benchmark once as the machine won't quite be as hot / PL2 will still be in use on the CPU. When I do my testing, I test all setting levels starting from the lowest preset and work my way up, so by the time I get to max settings that I use for these comparisons, it should be performing a bit worse as if you had actually been playing for a while.
I tried both laptops and chose the Zeph S. Excellent temps and performance out of the box. I re-pasted the GPU with GC-Extreme and liquid metal on the CPU for even better temps. My CPU could undervolt by about -0.055v. It's interesting to see the big difference in FPS having a discrete graphics option to get rid of optimus, great review as always.
@@JarrodsTech hey, I was wondering about one thing. If I buy the 16gb ram variant for the zephyrus s, does it come with two 8gb dual channel rams or a single channel 16 gb ram. Is it possible to upgrade to 32 gb ram to upgrade the benchmarks. Cause I saw a post online where a guy upgraded it from a dual channel 16gb ram to a 24 gb ram and it decreased his benchmarks, this was because it resulted in a single 8gb ram and 16gb ram but they weren't running as dual channel. Kindly help me on this matter.
I have Scar III since month, let me share my findings: - Thermal paste by Asus is very bad, after repasting with mx 2, CPU stress test runs 7 degrees cooler (with UV it is max 74 degree) - Armoury create Performance and Turbo mode increases CPU and GPU heat drastically, while it does not really offer more FPS in games. I Suggest to use windows profile, ike that world of warshups runs 18 degree cooler (64), Anthem 8 degrees cooler (under 80) with same FPS, also it is much more quiet. - I also checked firestrike, score, it was around 13600 points witrh i7-9750H+rtx 2060, CPU max 4300 Mhz, max 81 degrees. I think it is fair enough.
Good to hear about the improvement, I always wonder what the quality of paste is like they use by default and it's unfortunate that it's not something I can test in my reviews by swapping for a known good paste.
@@stillnotsteve1989 I cannot do that with either laptop as they are borrowed review units that get sent back when I'm done, if I change the paste then the next reviewer will unknowingly report incorrect results due to what I've done.

Would love to see an under volt how to video for the GX502. What do you use and what process do you take to get a stable under volt? Also do you under volt graphics ?
I don't personally bother undervolting the GPU for my reviews. There will be some more info in my thermal testing video on it, here's a guide on undervolting if you need it: ruclips.net/video/yNt9L3BWOFo/видео.html
Because of the heat distribution alone, I would pick the Scar III. After 1 year of use the Zephyrus will have some dust inside it, making it probably overheat and potentially damage the laptop components. And also I do not like that both have cooling vents facing your right hand where your mouse is. That will be incredible annoying when gaming and the fan blowing hot air at full speed.
Hey Jarrod. Great job with the review mate. Thanks for making this comparison. I went with getting the GX502. Just curious, is it normal for the left side of the keyboard deck to feel warm even while doing normal productivity tasks.
Cheers Ryan! I don't remember that being something that I noticed with mine from memory, I guess you could maybe see if you look at the thermal camera testing at idle and see if mine looked warmer. If I didn't include that in this video, it will be in the full review
Hi mate I ordered alienware M15 R2 from Dell Australia, which has GTX 1660Ti. So it will be good gaming laptop compared to these and how was tobii eye tracking while playing games? Thank you.
Manideep Rao well the scar 3 is a great option but my recommendation would be getting a legion y740 great thermals with gsync Either way you’re gonna have a better experience than m15 Or just wait until ces 2020 to get over by a week to get the newer stuff if you’re not in a hurry
That's exactly my current dilemma. I am thinking about either a Hero III G731 (with nvidia rtx 2070) or a Zephyrus S GX502 (also with an rtx 2070). I dislike the fact that Zephyrus does not have a 17 inch version (unless you buy a 701 model with a weird keyboard and touchpad location), and that it lacks buttons on the touch pad, as well as a LAN jack. Hero III is more preferable for me in this sense. I however can see that Hero III is a bit slower and I also really don't like its overall design that much. All in all - I'm still indecisive about which model to pick :(((
@@JarrodsTech Thanks a lot for your reply! I am also thinking more about gx502. One more concern that I have about it though is that overheating might be a problem in the long term. I see that Zephyrus is much hotter at high performance modes. Plus I've read that a device is less durable if it's constantly too hot. I would like to be able to use the laptop for at least 4-5 years if I pay so much for it :) My current ROG G55V tends to heat a lot but I've been using it since 2014 and it's still ok.
Just the video I was waiting for cause I am just going to buy a gaming laptop and I was unable to decide between these two. A question about the games what about Escape from Tarkov, I really need to play that game and that's the main reason for buying a laptop. Not a tech genie so hope u give it opinion. Great video .keep up the great work
Escape from tarkov isn't really that much of a hard game to run, I could easily run it at Max settings with about 70-90fps with a laptop that had 16gb ddr3 ram and GTX 1080. You should probably go for the one that doesn't heat up easily and is a convenience for you.
Thanks! I have no experience playing that game so can't really say, but looks like that's already been covered thanks to a random commenter! That said, with these specs even modern high end games run well, so doubt it'd be an issue.
I was waiting for this video for so long... Thank you.. This video helped me as i was going to buy scar 3... But i hav one doubt.. Would the scar 3 i9 9th gen model with 32gb ram give more fps in games and perform better than this zypherus?? I am frm india.. love your videos.😊 waiting for ur reply.. Thank you... 😊
Hey i am random stranger and my guess is that scar iii wont have much better fps. Its just gonna throttle a lot more for like 2-3fps gain. I dont think that is worth it, but idk maybe jarrod knows better.
Just for mobility I would recommend you the zephyrus one since it has the smaller dimension and better performance than the scar III but you would need to consider the price since the zephyrus is more compact.
Nice one buddy u got a subscriber and btw i chose Scar 3 bcoz of the design. Since slight performance in games ,it doesnt matter for me . thanks for this.
Since both have similar specs.... with a slight edge in performance to the Zephyrus.... It came down to size and weight. I have enjoyed my Zephyrus S everyday since the day I bought it. Excellent review in my opinion.
I have GX502GW with the same configuration (9570H+RTX2070) but I'm not reaching these numbers, my fps fall ~30% short of what is demonstrated in this video in every title. Turbo mode is ON of course and -50mV offset for CPU, latest nvidia driver and BIOS as well. What can be the reason?
My guess is you just have 16gb of memory in single channel (the default memory soldered to the board), you can check this easily, if you have 16gb RAM then the single slot is not used, so you don't have dual channel. Dual channel can boost FPS in some games by up to 30%. If you do have dual channel, me next guess is you haven't disabled the Intel graphics through the Armory crate software (this is needed to use G-Sync), again easy to confirm, in task manager you shouldn't have the Intel GPU showing up, this gives a 15% or so boost on average.
@@JarrodsTech Thanks for the reply Jarrod. Indeed it is a 16Gb version. I’ve never imagined that RAM might have such a tremendous impact on the resulting FPS. Live and learn I guess. Might wanna consider buying an additional stick in this case to activate dual channel.
Is there display port on the zephyrus. Also is it connected directly to the graphics card and if it's not can it still do 1080p 144hz and stuff with g sync?
Can't recall off top my head or check the video just now, but ports are shown in the video, I wasn't testing that ports were wired to back when I had it so can't answer, but given you can pick with that laptop I doubt it goes to Intel.
hey buddy!!, u are doing great and best laptop reviewer out here and i have been waiting for this since a long time and no one did what u do. keep doing it and i agree with anyone who says JARROD IS BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only benefit in getting the Scar is, in case when someone needs to max out the CPU. Zephyrus goes upto the i7, whereas the Scar 3 has an option for the i9 as well. So if someone's considering the Scar over Zephyrus, he should go for it only if he opts for the i9. Else the Zephyrus which has Gsync, and is lighter, is better any day.
@@JarrodsTech Luckily power limits can be overrided using Throttlestop. I have the i7 variant of the Scar and have set PL1 to 100Watts. Cinebench R20 goes upto ~3150 points averaging 80-85C at 75 Watts and full 4 GHz. So if PL1 can be boosted manually on the i9 version, the i9 would be worth it - they do ship the i9 with faster CPU fans, so I guess it could handle a bit more heat from the i9.
I tried to overclock the screen on my Nitro 5 review as people asked me to try, it didn't work, and that's my only experience with it. From what I've heard if you push it too hard you can cause damage, so you'll probably want to do more research first.
I had scar III with rtx 2060 and really want to change to zephyrus s. One of reason is avaiability of better dac (ess sabre). You didn't mention about it in comparison. What can you say? Is dac really better on zephyrus?
@@JarrodsTech You can download a high definition music (24/192) and listen with similar headphones if they're OK. My advice is listen music through foobar 2000. And you can tell if there are any differences in sound. I guess it is a subjective assessment. I don't really like sound from headphone output on my scar III. I was thinking about buying external DAC, but if sound on zephyrus better it doesn't make sense. Thanks.
One would think that if you're going to spend this much money on a laptop, you would also be thinking about getting a decent external DAC/AMP to pair with as well. A decent $100 or so USB DAC/AMP should be sufficient and will easily outperform on-board soundcard. Of course, this depends on what cans or IEMs you currently have. Just my two cents.
Best reviewer anywhere on the internet, however you've not made my decisions any easier! haha.. Also how come you don't post links to Australian Pricing?
Thanks, happy to help! Mostly because Australia is 4% of the audience, I just mention the prices as a courtesy to the Australian companies lending me the products, and I am familiar with it. I guess if I want to add more pricing links I should also do all the other countries that have higher watch percentages, but then it gets too big and unsustainable.
@@JarrodsTech Thanks for replying, that's completely understandable with the audience side of it. I guess I was more just thinking down the lines of being an Australian content creator that it would make sense to price the country you live in. However with 4% of the audience that's definitely a waste of time and I'd probably do the same thing haha. I'm just waiting for a good deal to come up for a Helios 300!
I have the scar 3 and if you raise the TDP to 60W and undervolt at .15v you get way better results, also you get higher frame rates if you run games on a second monitor, I usually got 180fps on overwatch with built in display and using an external display I get 240 to 300...
I haven't had both with same specs so it's hard for me to say, but yes I'd expect the GX701 to do better in terms of thermals as the space is utilized for cooling, though despite being larger it has less storage space.
Thanks! Probably not as the GX701 I tested was almost a year ago with 8th gen CPU, maybe if they send me the new one with same specs I could do the comparison fairly.
If u are talking about laptops, do not buy a laptop with a ryzen. They are pretty weak compared to Intel. If you are talking about desktop, go for it. I'd say at least 5 years of 60fps high graphics in 1080p and medium to low on 2k or 4k in all new games
@@sahil7695 well but it should be a good laptop for at least 3 years (for gaming) and good for web surfing for at least 8/9 years. Sure its not as good as a Intel (since ryzen laptop CPUs are new) but you'll be ok nonetheless
Help, I'm probably going to buy the Zephyrus but I don't get the part about buying a second memory stick for dual-channel. How do I attach the stick to my laptop. Through the USB port? and does it matter what kind of memory stick?
You take off the bottom and install it in the SODIMM slot. DDR4-2666 stick with the same timings as the soldered memory (you can check this with HWinfo). If this makes no sense, you probably need to take it to someone to do for you.
I'm debating whether to grab one of these laptops in the next few months, or to wait for the new generations of cpus/gpus to come before getting a new laptop
I feel like there was a bias towards the Zepherys in this video, sure it can get 10-15 fps more in all the big games, but the Scar 3 is capable of getting to the 220's or very close to the 240 Hz on high settings which makes a big difference for judging between them.
There's no bias, it's simply winning in more of the categories than not, that's all there is to it. Both laptops are available with 240Hz, so what you're saying isn't really a consideration given the Zephyrus performs better.
I have a Scar III, same specs except mine only have a 512GB SSD. However, when playing games my fps always stays at the low 1%. Like in Witcher 3 with ultra settings, instead of the average 97 fps, I only get around 60 fps. Tomb Raider EE only runs at 80 fps, and for some reasons Dying Light at 60 fps but drops to 20-30 fps after a certain period of time. Only in League of Legends can I get a fps of 140. Why is this happening? I've searched online but still can't find an answer. Please help me out here.
Personally I prefer 15" because I use my laptop to travel, if you don't need to move it that much / don't mind transporting the bigger machine then 17" could be better if you prefer the larger screen. I've heard the 17" has an extra heatpipe too so cooling might be a little better, but I've never had the chance of reviewing one so haven't been able to confirm that for myself.
Because the Zephyrus has different 3.5 jacks for mic and headphones can I use a pair of headphones with a mic built in and plug it into the audio jack? By doing this will I be able to use the mic as well or do I need a separate one?

I have the scar III. In Shadow of the tomb raider, when I set gpu and cpu fan to 100% in manual mode, and with the latest driver, I get 90 frames in the highest setting in the built-in benchmark!
I get 100 with gx501 maxed out
@@hyphed4196 zephyrus laptops overclock the gpu in turbo mode. you have to take that into account. I really want to overclock my scar III but I don't think it's worth the risk!
@@MehrdadNsr mines not over locked
I might get higher FPS if I only run the highest benchmark once as the machine won't quite be as hot / PL2 will still be in use on the CPU. When I do my testing, I test all setting levels starting from the lowest preset and work my way up, so by the time I get to max settings that I use for these comparisons, it should be performing a bit worse as if you had actually been playing for a while.
U have read my mind.
Thnx man for this review..
Happy to help!
just found you, thank you for your clear explanation! subscribed also.
Which one do think is better the zephyrus s or vapour/mag 15?
Ryan Abraham zephrus because zephrurs has 240hz display and better graphics card rtx 2070 max p
mag-15 if you want thunderbolt, mech keyboard, bigger battery, and SD slot. Zephyrus for best gaming performance.
Thanks! Good to hear it's going well 😁
Very great comparison 🎊❤️

No problem at all, welcome to the channel!
I have Scar III since month, let me share my findings:
- Thermal paste by Asus is very bad, after repasting with mx 2, CPU stress test runs 7 degrees cooler (with UV it is max 74 degree)
- Armoury create Performance and Turbo mode increases CPU and GPU heat drastically, while it does not really offer more FPS in games.
@@JarrodsTech please do a review after swaping the thermal paste on zephyrus. The thermal is one of my main concern for this machine
I want to change my paste aswell but pretty scared lol
@@stillnotsteve1989 I cannot do that with either laptop as they are borrowed review units that get sent back when I'm done, if I change the paste then the next reviewer will unknowingly report incorrect results due to what I've done.
I got my Zepehrus S for $1,699.00 USD , pretty happy about that deal.
Daryl Nath got the Zephrus M which is nearly the same on sale for $1399
@@bryanmiller476 thanks but I already bought it and set it up, won't be changing. Also the price went back to $1,899.99 so still happy with my savings, going to get the extra ram today.
Daryl Nath I too added the extra 16gb of ram and also got a 2tb ssd in the main ssd slot and moved the 1TB to the 2nd slot
@@bryanmiller476 Nice, that would be over kill for me though. I have my main desktop for that. I mainly use it for work and light gaming and of course travel.I have to say I love this thing, best laptop I have bought in years.

Can u also review the comparison to the 17 inch version?
Thanks! I'll see what I can do, but last time I asked ASUS to borrow a 17" Scar III they didn't have one I could use :(

Good comparison and review. I would lean towards the Zephyrus S. I am currently using an MSI GS65 RTX2060, 512GB SSD, i7-9750H, 32GB RAM, 1080P 240Hz LED screen, purchased for $1399.
Yay thanks for uploading!

Could you add some kind of table of contents with links to minutes? It really, really helps navigating in the presentation
No, sorry, I intentionally don't do this on purpose for good reasons.
Thanks for the amazing review. GX502GW allows up to 32GB memory at maximum. How could we install a 32gb for 48gb total?
I believe that is possible, I've seen some companies selling it with 48 at least.
Fair enough, can't say I much noticed that myself, also with any laptop it's recommended you clean the dust out over time anyway.
Thank you.
With 240hz, 16gb ram
M15 r2 has very poor thermals...
@@probablyryxn so should I cancel the order and go for scar3?
Manideep Rao well the scar 3 is a great option but my recommendation would be getting a legion y740 great thermals with gsync
Either way you’re gonna have a better experience than m15
Or just wait until ces 2020 to get over by a week to get the newer stuff if you’re not in a hurry
@@probablyryxn but I already ordered 6 days ago because I got 30 percent off for the boxing Day
That's exactly my current dilemma. All in all - I'm still indecisive about which model to pick :(((
I'd go the GX502 and just plug in a larger screen when at home if you want more than 15"
@@JarrodsTech Thanks a lot for your reply!
Both of them are largely similar in my opinion Idk about anyone else but I would just go for the cheaper one :P
Just for mobility I would recommend you the zephyrus one since it has the smaller dimension and better performance than the scar III but you would need to consider the price since the zephyrus is more compact.
I would definitely choose the Scar III because it's $1600 here in Australia.
@@randomcommenter2306 wtf bro... that's much cheaper than here in my country. If I live there I would consider buying it

Haha good timing!
Thanks! Fair enough, good to hear it's been going well!
Legend has it you're still replying to comments.
Checks out
I have GX502GW with the same configuration (9570H+RTX2070) but I'm not reaching these numbers, my fps fall ~30% short of what is demonstrated in this video in every title.
Cool review. thanks.

I am going for the Scar 3, because it has the 17 inch model. And for the price, it really is the winner for me.
Fair enough
Is there display port on the zephyrus. Also is it connected directly to the graphics card and if it's not can it still do 1080p 144hz and stuff with g sync?
Can't recall off top my head or check the video just now, but ports are shown in the video, I wasn't testing that ports were wired to back when I had it so can't answer, but given you can pick with that laptop I doubt it goes to Intel.

Thanks! Happy to help!
Does anyone have a list of G-SYNC laptops? I can't find any search filter on any of the major vendors (NewEgg / XOTICPC etc) that have that attribute.
Yeah 8 cores could be a good option if you need it, granted no idea how well that one performs in terms of thermal/power limits.
Great review
Thanks!
Hey jarrods tech! Have you ever tried the custom resolution utilty?
To tune your framrate Hz? Is it safe..

One of reason is
avaiability of better dac (ess sabre). You didn't mention about it in comparison. What can you say? Is dac really better on zephyrus?
Yeah I don't mention it because I honestly do not know how to test that to fairly compare, sorry. Are you able to advise how to do this?
@@JarrodsTech You can download a high definition music (24/192) and listen with similar headphones if they're OK. My advice is listen music through foobar 2000. And you can tell if there are any
differences in sound.
Yeah external screen boosts frame rate as it bypasses Optimus, I have a dedicated video coming on that soon 👍
Hey Jarrod .. Zepherus GX 701 or GW 502 ? ... which is best for gaming at highest settings?
the GX701X shoul be better at thermals...
I haven't had both with same specs so it's hard for me to say, but yes I'd expect the GX701 to do better in terms of thermals as the space is utilized for cooling, though despite being larger it has less storage space.
@@JarrodsTech hopefully that's one thing they fix this year. (finger cross) i love the gx701 design

Great review again jarrod 👍 can you make a comparison between the Asus Zephyrus S gx701 and this new Zephyrus?
Thanks! Probably not as the GX701 I tested was almost a year ago with 8th gen CPU, maybe if they send me the new one with same specs I could do the comparison fairly.
How many years do you think 2060 is future proof with ryzen 7 3500.
And do you play games or just review lapi?
If u are talking about laptops, do not buy a laptop with a ryzen. They are pretty weak compared to Intel. If you are talking about desktop, go for it. I'd say at least 5 years of 60fps high graphics in 1080p and medium to low on 2k or 4k in all new games
@@joaomatos5973 actually I already have laptop with that specification.

I still prefer the scar 3 from the prices mostly and essentially the same great experience in both
Although for a better experience overall imma go with zephyrus instead of paying another 2,600 ontop of 2,000 to get some upgrades in the future.
I'm debating whether to grab one of these laptops in the next few months, or to wait for the new generations of cpus/gpus to come before getting a new laptop
i say wait until ces 2020. nvidia is expected to announce next gen ampere.
Yeah at this point might as well wait one more week to see what happens at CES. I'm flying out there tomorrow!
I feel like there was a bias towards the Zepherys in this video, sure it can get 10-15 fps more in all the big games, but the Scar 3 is capable of getting to the 220's or very close to the 240 Hz on high settings which makes a big difference for judging between them.
Zephyrus has a 240hz model which i bought.

I just ordered the Asus rog Strix hero 3 without 240hz. Got a good deal. These laptops are so hard to get!
Nice! Let us know how it goes!
Also would you recommend 15 inch rog or 17 inch? Like i dont have space for external display. So ill have to live with that what laptop offers.
i have a Scar I edition 17.3´´. i wont buy another 13, 14, inch display ever jajaja. the sice of the panel is great (at least for me )
Personally I prefer 15" because I use my laptop to travel, if you don't need to move it that much / don't mind transporting the bigger machine then 17" could be better if you prefer the larger screen.
Not actually sure, might need a cheap adapter.
