"A dirt road A cold beer Blue jeans A red pickup A rural noun, simple adjective No shoes No shirt No Jews, you didn't hear that." - Bo Burnham That's basically what modern country is.
My dad started saying, "I love this new country!" And I'm like, of course you do, it's just like your old 70's rock but with blind patriotism and blatantly artificial twang. It's like listening to Crosby Stills and Nash without having to think or feel anything complicated.
The thing that amazed me the most about the whole Dixie Chicks thing is that musically they had nothing to say. Other than the George Bush comment they were not even remotely controversial.
I came here to try and find some comically bad 9/11 era country music but I accidentally permanently scarred myself by reading the comments under several kieth jarrett music videos. Thanks record breaker.
aw, thank you for the kind words! it's probably more of a consistency thing tbh. my aim is to start up again within the next few weeks with some lower stakes/production videos (this video was a 200+ layer adobe after effects project because i hadn't taught myself premiere yet lmao), so i can sustain the effort. the algo loves consistency.
Enjoyed the video. I've been pretty frustrated with modern country for a while and it's nice to see it put into a more concise analysis. I'd like to add Orville Peck as an interesting alt-country artist. His style is like new wave+country, it gives it an interesting dreamy sort of quality. Also all of his stuff is gay af, so that's nice.
Nice vid, Christian Bale! How about exploring a bit deeper into the history of counter-cultural American country/ folk and bluegrass? Lots of fertile ground if you start digging around Woody Guthrie et al!
I wanna say thanks for making a neat introductory video for a topic I find myself oddly invested lookin into from a materialistic and social perspective. I do wanna add to you’re thesis though cause it’s part of mine. I think the rise in post 90s country commercialism, this video’s topic and the overall consumer market and corporate homogenization in the US overall. Lead to that type of corporate white city boy 2000s country I grew up with which would then lead to bro country and the new even shinier and poppy boyfriend country. TLDR: country post 90s turned into white male neoliberal culture with a facade of roots and class (in the economic sense).
Yeah he surely had and just doesn’t like him, since Simpson was named in that post he quoted, but he skipped over that part. He also apparently doesn’t like Jason Isbell or the Drive By Truckers, but whatever, he’s mostly right
Not just the Dixie Chicks but Linda Ronstadt stood up against that 9/11 George Bush culture that eventually blew up in the media when she dedicated her song Desperado to Michael Moore's video Farenheit 9/11 on her early 2000s tour and supposedly got kicked out of the Aladdin Hotel in Vegas. It created an international stir and made her persona non grata with that same right wing crowd, even today in 2024. At that time and afterwards she would take the concert "room temperature" of her audience starting with "seen any good movies lately?" Most would laugh. She had quite a mixed crowd of pro and con but by the time she got to Phoenix (where I saw her) everyone anticipated this. Linda was lambasted in right wing media and by the collective narcissist crowd aka republiconservatives. She also stood against Trump in a similar fashion. The lady has guts.
You are right about most of it maybe all of it- I am pissed that The Chicks were treated so bad. do a show on BADFINGER they were screwed over shame shame shame
I don't really agree with this argument but I like your honesty on why you believe this stuff you believe in even though I don't really agree in my opinion I feel like country music got worse because of over-commercializing it not because of politics or 9/11
i think that's ultimately what my argument is. i try to come down hard on "nashville" as a commercial entity, but nashville is politically inclined and aped its aesthetics (which are what make modern country so monochrome) from a jingoistic post-9/11 environment.
i don't see a material difference, and historically most right libertarians don't either. murray rothbard was an ardent admirer of people you'd consider run of the mill right authoritarians and the libertarian right in the US has happily allied itself with tech feudalists and the populist right to transfer wealth upwards.
This is the exact niche topic I was looking for, thank you for making this

It’s sad what happened to them because they were making some of the best mainstream country music there was at the time.
It was criminal how right wingers reacted to the Dixie Chicks Bush comments, especially when in hindsight they were right.

you're welcome. i love you.
This is so well made. Assumed you had numbers of the same value! Gonna binge your vids to give your vids the views they deserve
I'm sorry the algorithm wasn't kind to you, you're genuinely incredibly talented in video making

I'm glad you enjoyed! I considered including him actually - only didn't make it because I discovered him too late.
Idk why the algorithm recommended me this at 3am in 2024, but I’m sure glad it did.
Real quality stuff. "The arms manufacturing division of Cracker Barrel" had me in fucking stitches! 🤣

I actually feel like I'm going to have to - too much left untouched and plenty left on the cutting room floor.

This is so well made!!! How is there so few views and likes???
Good production quality bro

I have never felt appealed to this much. This is my shit. +1 subs.

5:11 - I'd like to believe those were the last words of Mohamed Atta.
Toby Keith was my favorite artist, then 9/11 happened and I couldn't stand him anymore.
If you want more cowpunk in your life, check out 500 Miles to Memphis.
How about Hank Williams III?!?!?!
And then we never saw him again...
Listen if there's anything I've learned from good youtube essayists it's that you always disappear for 6 months before having a serious comeback.

Came here to thank you for calling out Toby Keith and making me the only person in the office to not be sad when I heard he died.
I searched this to find a similar view to mine
