I remember when he was sent up to pinch hit and the announcers were playing up his bad knee but I knew he was a very good hitter . That’s all he had to be at that at bat . He didn’t have to be able to sprint .
Growing up a Mets fan, I remember the Frank Viola trade very well in 1989. While I was happy with acquiring Viola, I wasn't happy about giving up 5 players/pitchers for him. I remember calling wfan radio in NY and speaking to Judy McDougall (Jody Mac). I remember asking why the Mets couldn't get a 2nd player in the deal like a randy bush or a gene Larkin? He hung up on me and made fun of me along with a few callers after that. 2 years later I felt vindicated. Thank you Mr Larkin :) I always believed in you
As a twins fan, I appreciate that story Derek. I dont remember alot about that trade but Rick Aguilera must have been involved.. a key part of the twins '91 championship. I do remember Rick as a member of the Mets in the '86 world series, he was a quality pitcher early on.. yes, the twins got the better of that deal, yet sad to see 'sweet music' go. Oh ya, I think Mike pag was in that trade too.. dang I got a good memory, its just short
@@selms22 Kevin Tapani was in that trade who was a solid starter for the twins for a few years. David West was also in that trade who was the Mets top pitching prospect at that time. Your Twins definitely got the better of the deal because they would go on to win another world championship in 1991. The Mets had only 2 second place finishes to show for that trade 👍
Nice to see gene's friendly face after all these years. Good to see he is doing well and those knees are too😊

Gene Larkin has not had to pay for a beer since 91.

WFAN was, and is, the worst
I hope to meet him someday!
Herb Carneal's call on the radio was far superior.
I watched you with your knee all messed up, you nailed it though.
Would Have Hrbek scored on this hit if it wasn't the end of the game?
