Welcome back to Shaka Fishing! This video is all about a in depth squid tutorial. How to clean your squid. How to prepare your squid for fishing. How to preserve your squid for hitting the Hawaiian ocean. Fishing in the past I use to just take a box of squid down with me and run it fishing, but this always seemed to end up with me wasting squid and wasting time. So I began to prep my squid prior to fishing and it has been way better of an experience. I am passing over what I learned about preparing squid for fishing here in Hawaii or elsewhere in this tutorial. Keeping your bait ready to go and prepping it makes all the difference when you are out there on the shore, which I figured out the long and hard way. Don’t be like that, follow some of this fish bait tutorial video, and save more time on the Hawaii shore line for fishing.

Besides throwing the whole pieces in I also like to pre-slice some in another ziplock. Salt it good and it'll last over a year.
That is a prime idea, next time I will get some nice and precut too.
some of the best strikes that i had were with the whole squid head hooked trough the eye, big fish seem to love that, you get the tentacles moving and the juices from the head

i used to use a knife to cut the head before but i use scissors now to cut it open
Got to get me a prime pair asap!
Try cutting the squid from the opposite side of the head you get more leverage and it's easier to cut even with a dull knife
Go to the Ace clearance rack and buy a pair of kitchen shears for a dollar, best investment ever for bait prepping.

Squid should never be cleaned for fishing. When u freeze it with the guts inside it helps keep it from getting damaged by freezing. Also the head should be kept whole attached with the tentacles. The eyes are reflective or glow at night it attracts fish especially larger predator fish like papio. The rest of it u should never take the skin of the alsquid it has a certain scent and smell and it reflects light being the squid can change colors and it attracts fish. When we clean squid it always to make it easier for us as humans but it’s not better for fishing. Squid freezer dries a whole lot faster without the guts then with them
isn't it bad to wash bait with fresh water?

but is it regular salt or sea salt? I was just taught that fresh water kills the smell of the bait
Once you take the squid out of the box, never wash it! Tap water will destroy the smell and the skin. When I started fishing, I use to wash it to remove the ink and for some reason, the fish are not biting! Always use the bait fresh out of the box. Don't wash it.
Just nailed one of my biggest papio with this bait a few days ago ;D

Kapuka is not a real word as far as I know. It is a toss together of ka and puka, "the and hole/nothing". King of nothing.

Recycle your sack n save poke container. Layer calamari/salt/calamari/salt. My favorite part to dunk is the eye/tentacles as a whole piece.
That is a super good idea! Next one I get I will try both those ideas out.
