Its crazy that this - pretty much the best part of The Game Awards - was pretty much just an ad inserted by Remedy/Epic. If only all ads would be as good as this.
I think all singing/speaking parts were live, and instruments were playback, ie something like karaoke. Such a great show. I just started AW2 so at the time I didnt get it, but now I am hooked to this song Ihave to listen it twice everyday lol :)
I knew nothing about the Alan Wake video game. I had know idea there was a sequel. Then I learned of this performance. I now know everything about Alan Wake and I've started playing Alan Wake 2.
I like to think one person who only know's Sam Lake because he looks like the original Max Payne got really confused wondering what the hell Max Payne was doing dancing.
@5:04 Sam appears on the left side of the screen before we see him dancing with the rest. You can catch a silhouette of him at @3:17. If you watch some YTubers that posted their phone recordings, you can also catch Sam walking out from the side to the center before the finale dance routine
The singing is live (at least Marko, sounds like Matthew is too as there are some subtle differences from the recorded session - unsure about David, he seems a bit too quiet but that could be due to poor mic:ing or mixing), but the instrumentals sadly aren't - would've been awesome with a true live performance. ^^
@@PCBum Remember that Markus "Captain" doesn't actually play drums in the band, so I highly doubt that. It definitely doesn't sound nor look live to me when it comes to any of the instruments - Olli has the skills to pull off the riffs live, but it sounds too perfect (i.e. too close to the record) even for him. Even the best guitarists will bring nuances to any playthrough of a song. Especially with riffs this fast. And yes, you can see when Marko does his first singing line that he lifts his right hand off the bass, but the line (with a clear picking sound) continues. ^^
@@PeTTs0n88 you definitely have a point, but i stick to my version for now) but i will go and make some digging to be sure)) i want to believe that Ollie plays live, otherwise i will be disappointed) Drums btw is very straightforward and easy to play for anybody familiar with them. Marco as i said ofc doesn't play bass. Cause he never did)
@@PCBum Yeah, I'm not gonna claim I have conclusive evidence when it comes to everyone of them. :) Especially the singing is difficult to know when you've got singers that talented and with Broadway experience, where consistency is key. Marko most definitely sounds live though. :) And while drums can be "easy" (relatively, the song isn't exactly Neil Peart levels of drumming), this is still live and I highly doubt Captain would be able to pull this off live sounding that tight. He's damn talented in general though, so I'm not saying it's completely impossible. ^^
I only recently heard of the dance routine in Alan Wake 2, so googled it and loved it. Then heard they did it live, and that google brought me here. And I had the same reaction when he appeared- "ITS SAM LAKE!!! HE'S THERE!" lol
The Herald Of Darkness section from AW2 is one of favourite moments in gaming in a very long time. It filled me with joy. It's nice to know that there are still devs who are confident enough to take risks. Please please please give us more of this.
I'm pretty sure the music is a back track cause the band is only a 3 piece. It would be almost impossible to play this with 3 people without a significant effort to rearrange it, yet the parts we hear sound the same. The vocals though are definitely all live. You can hear differences and imperfections to the studio version. And also there were some issues with Marko's mic, you can hear the mic volume fluctuate at halfway through.
As someone who never even heard of this game prior to the game awards, was I confused- yes, but did I love it- HELL YES! I am sucker for this kind of music. I still don't plan on playing this game (I don't like horror games), but I am interested in the group for sure.
If you pay attention, right before Sam appears, there's a general view of the whole stage, look where the lights are and you'll see Sam coming. Since he's walking right next to the lights he's almost invisible during that part.
@@synaesthesia2010 Mr Door is coming from the right of the screen, but I mean, look to the left of the screen, nex to the band, where the lights are. There's a person walking right next to the lights, you can barely see them because of the lights. I think that's Sam.
Finally, after years of hard work and talent, Poets of the Fall (aka Old Gods of Asgard) got the recognition they deserved at the VGA. Best of all, this isn't even the best song in ALAN WAKE 2.
David's and Matthew's parts are definitely not live. You can see with the phone recordings how quickly and radically they change posture and body movement when they start / finish their parts. This causes inadequate breathing -> uneven, wavy notes, that don't appear here.
You're wrong about them both, I played/listened to this part ingame to the point of memorize the timmings and nuances, so I can confirm there's very evident differences here in how they come with the lines. One very noticeable one is when Matthew sings "I never meant FOR IT to ruin my life that way" in the game (incredibly) he sounds off key on "for it", thing that he fixed in the live version what is amazing (I'm pretty sure he also noticed and wanted to improve that part!). Pay attention and you will catch all the small differences.
@@chupitolepame5357 David & Matthew recorded their voices again specially for the occasion and then did playback. The only one singing live was Old Gods' vocals. Amazing job nontheless ❤
Alan Wake II is having a new version soon, isn't it? I'm a Finn, and I played Alan Wake years ago. Then life happened. Then my PC was too old for new games and this year I got Control. WOW. Now I need to do Alan Wake again and everything since... But I am not complaining ;)
lol, sure thing man. Listen to Door when he introduced the event and then listen to his voice again 2 seconds after once the actual song starts, it's 100% his voice/studio track playing, for untrained ears it could be hard but it's obvious@@Snowpiercer2
@@xVmbra You need new ears. Neither David or Matthew are lip synced. There is a rhythm guitar track that's playing in the background, and the bass is tracked (Marko isn't a bass player in real life), but all the voices were live. If you care enough to listen comprehensively, David's voice at the end of a verse tapers off a little breathy. Same for Matthew, but in the middle of one of the verses.

Sam Lake, the happiest person at the Awards.
He's finally getting the recognition he deserves. I've been saying it for years, people are sleeping on Remedy, they're probably top 3 devs right now.
In that moment, he was probably the happiest person on planet earth.
Matthew Poretta (the VA for Alan Wake) is a classically trained singer/vocalist. Hence why he has such a great voice.
He has quite a bit of Broadway experience too, so he's got some serious singing chops. ^^
He's so unbelievably talented!! I was stunned honestly
I think his brother is a professional opera singer, too.
Dont know about the brother but both of his parents are opera singers. @@mikaelviitala833

Alan wrote himself into the Game Awards, what a legend ...
The fact that this could be completely canon in Alan Wake is wild.
The best part is seeing Matthew doing the dance as well, didn’t even realized he was dancing until I saw some camera footage from the performance
Sam Lake's smile is absolutely infectious
can you blame him? his game won 3 awards and he was justified in fighting to keep the sequence in the game when others wanted it cut
I cannot stop listening to this version. They all look like they're having so much fun
so good to see them all smiling and having fun
Especially Sam looks like the happiest man alive
And the voice of max payne/Alex casey has tragically passed away. I'm grateful he got to use his voice for alan wake 2
3:32 My reaction when Sam Lake too started dancing👆
Really happy for him
Also RIP James McCaffrey😔

I had to reiterate to my friends that Alan Wake 2 is in fact a horror game, and a pretty damn scary one at that
