“I promise it’s better than the real deal” lol. But taste is on the tongue of the taster. You’re a chef. You like your food. You’ve tasted your recipes. You know good food from bad food. You’ve put your heart, you energy, your time, your money, your courage into your recipes and their execution. Can you compete with the technical abilities of a 5 star chef? Idk probably not yet. You may never want to. I don’t. I’m learning how to cook soul food. Perfectionism is useful as long as it doesn’t cloud your ability to see how good you’re doing EVERYTHING else. (Not yelling - just no italics). I didn’t hear you mess anything up. You did good. You’re brave for recording yourself too.
Listen to Kanye’s Ghost Town and read the lyrics. He sorta botches the freestyle and the other guy is trying to think of something to say after “like God did on Sunday” and the song doesn’t suffer. Listen to Another Side of Bob Dylan. He’s laughing and forgetting lyrics. He’s a poet and he knows it. He hopes he don’t blow it. In Hard Rain he messed up the lyrics. Like a Rolling stone he messed up the lyrics. We like it anyways. Some people like chicken. I like beans rice and spinach. But I can appreciate someone frying up some wings and tossing them in hot sauce and serving them beside a puddle of ranch. Your music is good. Let it be what it is. As a fellow bedroom songwriter in rehearsal mode - I think we ought to be a bit on the unapologetic side. We don’t have to justify what we’re doing to anybody. Get out there serve your stuff and someone’s bound to enjoy it. If not, so what? But I understand the feeling and the inclination to make fun of ourselves. Keeps the game light. I love making fun of myself. And can do so excessively when I’m nervous.
Your mild discomfort was somewhat noticeable in between songs but it didn’t take away from the performance. While playing you seemed comfortable and loose. I don’t know how you sound in studio and wouldn’t care if I was there. The humor added an element of honesty to your performance though.
If you had not said anything and got up there and let your music talk I wouldn’t have noticed you being nervous.
Here’s a bit of excessive explanation and promotion of my own - I hope this comment finds you well and only contributes to your growing awareness and confidence in yourself not just as a musician but also as a human. I only intend to help you (and myself) out. Within a few months I’ll be about an hour north of Atlanta so if you’re interested in playing with others - maybe we can hangout and see if our styles can work together.
    Take care and stay observant

I always appreciate your honesty and insight and I always feel encouraged to "get on it". Perfectionism makes me shy away from live, but I find that there is always someone that connects with the music when I do it.

What an amazing Open Mic night - phewee! A lot of talent there. Your performance was really engaging.
I can TOTALLY relate with the whole self reflection after live shows - most people aren't even listening to my 'between songs banter' anyway so I've ceased worrying about what comes out my mouth now - other than the songs!

Well done, Jordan. The best thing about getting out there is that you never know what can happen. That's also the worst thing. lol I think the net result will be more fans for your music.

Great video Jordan. Your honesty on this issue is refreshing. Your content always grabs me because I feel like I’m going through an awful lot of the same things. I had a humbling experience of a similar nature not too long ago which I’ll tell you about: So for the last year or so I’ve been super productive in songwriting terms. Really happy with my output. But no live gigs/performances either. So a friend was organising a small gathering and some music and I decided to put myself forward to play some of my own songs. The sound was terrible, I was nervous and I don’t think I was rehearsed enough. I think part of the problem is that I write so much music and then record it straight away and then never play it again. Anyway, my banter onstage is terrible as well🤦🏻‍♂️So yes, a pretty humbling experience. But as you said, we all have a long way to go/ more to learn. I think you’re being slightly harsh on your banter and performance…..I think you did well! But I know we all are our own harshest critics. Thanks for your content again man.

I'm glad the video resonated! Because boy, I relate to a lot of what you've said. Every time I switch gears, from recording to gigging and back again, I feel like I have to learn or remember a set of different skills. Nothing translates as well as I expect it... but that's the way it goes. I keep telling myself that I can lean into the discomfort and make it fun, and that works... some of the time ;)
Let's agree to go easier on ourselves during our next gigs... deal??
