How to Bounce Tracks in the Tascam Model 12
Просмотров 30516 часов назад
Bouncing is an integral step in many DAWless recordings. And many devices (or their manuals) clearly explain how to perform a bounce. The Tascam Model 12 does not. I've made this video to explain and demonstrate how to perform a bounce in this device. What I Learned from Steve Albini
Просмотров 704День назад
On May 7, 2024, we lost a legend. Steve Albini has passed at 61. He produced an incredible number of records, including some of my favorites (like Superchunk's No Pocky for Kitty and, of course, Nirvana's In Utero). But more than that: he was one of the last, brightest beacons of a DIY aesthetic that revolutionized popular music and continues to inspire. One of my private wishes was to record a...

    I've always got my Model 12 connected to my computer. So I just connect in the system menu, drag the files across, and I've got a new backup. Every device occasionally has a hiccup and the 12 is no different. I'm so pleased with mine it's almost untrue. I treat the data as no different from photos on an SD card: when I get the camera home I backup - always. Even tape can break. Good luck for new takes, you'll probably be fine from now on.

    This has been an issue on the Tascam dp series for me since 2011. There has been no effort by Tascam to fix this issue. I still have several of the devices but this forces me to save constantly and use a focusrite and computer on occasion.

    • @JordanSeal

      Interesting... I've been using DP devices for a few years, and I'm glad I haven't encountered it before. This experience has taught me more about how the Model 12 saves data, and it seems more automatic and "modern" than what I experienced on the DP devices. But going forward, I think I'll do more manual saving and routine backups... because it's less painful than EAA (Error Anticipation Anxiety).

    Channel 11/12 is always recording, to prove this record your three tracks and then take your audio into a daw and 11/12 will be there separately this is why I use what you did in the beginning of the video for mixdown, without a computer. Because the faders on channels 1 to 9/10 are live when summed to the main fader I can arrange and mix the tracks live.

  • @I-LOG
    @I-LOG 7 дней назад

    You actually CAN listen back to 11/12 in real-time. Just press the button labeled "SD Main Mix Return" (its right above the second headphone volume knob) and when you press play and are monitoring the main mix, it'll playback whatever was recorded to 11/12.

    • @I-LOG
      @I-LOG 7 дней назад

      Also, to solve having to push the fader up so high, there is a track normalization feature in the menu that can bring the level of the digital file up. It's under MTR -> Track Edit in the menu, though you may have to get the latest firmware in order for it to be available.

  • @Dan.Solo.Chicago

    Oh wow. That was my first pedal too. I was 15 though, but close enough. I got from Guitar Center too. It was Chicago’s only Guitar Center at the time, so everybody went there. At the front of the store they had a killer demo rig setup where you could try out virtually every effects pedal they sold. It was f-ing awesome. Every Boss, MXR, Ibanez, DigiTech multi-effects, and DOD. I don’t remember there being any Electro Harmonics pedals there, but I could be mistaken. I was a few months in to playing guitar, and needed a distortion pedal so I could finally play Smell’s Like Teen Spirit the way you’re supposed to. I talked my dad into giving me half the money for it if I came up with the other half. I only hustled up about half of my end, so I just told my dad it was more expensive than it actually was to make up the difference. lol. I sat at the display for around two hours, trying every pedal there. They looked so cool. All the different colors, and the various casings. The MXR pedals looked kind of strange. They were so plain and simple. A very industrial, utilitarian look. It was the mid 90’s, so they had the DOD lamb series, with the crazy names and graphics. Back then, that whole series was looked at as like the trailer trash of the effects pedal world. People would look down on you I they saw you using one of those. They were just lame. Even the quality was bad. They were made cheap and marketed toward the younger Gen X musicians. Disposable. There were a lot of people who thought everything by DOD was junk because of it.

    Having used the Zoom L-8 for 3-4 years, I feel like the way it enables a computer-less, hands-on recording experience keeps things feeling musical and inspired. Then mixing and editing in a DAW gives all the power and flexibility I could ever want. The L-8's pretty handy and powerful but far from perfect and a little flimsy, so I've been wondering if the Tascam Model 12 might be a good upgrade.

    • @JordanSeal
      @JordanSeal 20 дней назад

      Yes, but it’s not as simple as you’d hope… using the Tascam’s interface, you have to “export” your tracks (so they’re in .wav and accessible on a separate partition of your SD card), then connect the device (or the SD) to the iPhone via connector. Then, you’ll be able to import your files just like you would pull them from a USB stick. Not the easiest, but honestly, not that difficult. Just annoying by the standards of someone using modern devices.

    Jordan, I came here to get ideas/help with my brainfarting with a tune I'm writing...needing some inspiration, or just ideas how to get past writer's block. What I found was a guy that's got serious talent for writing. Your ideas for the verses are all great, but even better is your Bachelor Roses way of sussing them out! Cutting to the chase: your first idea for the verse is great. Different, tells a story. The 2nd idea for the verse, however- is so much more poignant, direct, story telling, but moreover- it grabs the listener, sits them down in front of you, and tells them the story - its got more X factor. My thoughts? You can use the first idea for the first verse, the 2nd idea for the 2nd verse, OR- after doing a (rare) long first chorus, go into that 2nd idea as a BRIDGE, then a solo or a instrumental interlude, then back into a double chorus and then an outtro. Simple, to the point, effective, and you utilize BOTH ideas, because in story telling, you can travel thru the woods, then exit onto a busy street with tons of traffic and SLAM that storyline home! Whatever you do, or may have already done, I'm sure it'll be incredible. Damn. Would love to keep in contact with you !
