  • After several failed attempts to record decent background vocals, I returned to the shed for one more "do or die" vocal session. And somehow, I am not dead.
    0:00 Intro
0:43 A bunch of failed attempts.
    2:09 So what's next?
    2:41 Singing simple "oooooh's" for the pre-chorus.
3:41 Echoing key lines in the chorus.
    5:30 Ascending "ooooooh's" for the mini-bridge.
7:00 Turning a guitar outtake into "oooooh's" for the last verse.
    7:47 Musing about "comfort zones."

One upside of going outside your comfort zone is that it's super exciting when you nail it. (as evident by your reaction as you're getting the parts in this video). When I get a guitar part it's like "well, yeah, i'm decent at guitar, so of course", but If I manage to sing anything in key, good tone, emotive - you'd think I cured cancer.
Good video. Not enough music-sphere youtubers showcase the joy of discovery inherent in being a musician/songwriter - which is odd because it's kind of central to the whole thing. 👍

😂 you're absolutely right: I've overjoyed when I ~like~ any part that I didn't perform on a guitar (or bass). Because vocals are central and difficult, they have the highest emotional payoff when they work.
As always: really appreciate your comment and insight!!

I know you did a 3rd above but did you try a 3rd above that stays on that note throughout the entirety of the line? You might have to go to a different note on certain parts, but 3rd above monotone is how I start all mine.

I didn't try that... but I wish I had. Right before giving up on a word-for-word harmony, I was looking for something like that (that moved a lot less). But now: it's on the list for next time!
