    In the final stage of his inside-the-wall experience, we find Pink’s true self left behind (”at the hotel”), while his inhuman side is going about tearing apart those labeled ”with spots”.

      And then Animals. As a politically neutral ex professional finnish soldier (raised by another similar and his politically neutral wife) who attended a music-oriented class at school, studying a little bit of clarinet and drums, with talents who later studied around the world playing their own instruments, ending up in philharmonic orchestras or as conductors in opera and whatnot, I just love how she nails the points of these rock music pieces that I have listened (more then once) and figured out just the same; Animals is a pretty brutally accurate description of different types of people, us human apes. I 'wasted' all my talents using my working life practicing how to eliminate human apes, of course in the belief that it will maintain peace; Pretty disgusting business, I don't recommend it except for Dogs who have no talents to waste!

    • @thatguy5847
      @thatguy5847 Месяц назад

      Beautifully put. The cult movie sort of interprets this death in Comfortably Numb. It’s through his induction from those managing him that conforms his isolationism into projecting his fears as dangers. In turn he is set on destroying and oppressing, as his delusion feels justified. In The Flesh, no doubt, very spooky.

    There is no synthesized chorus...that was not available until the advent of sampling technology...about 5 years past the recording of this album. That is live vocals simply layered in the recording. That makes it sound as though there is a many member chorus since it's many voices. You are completely correct in that this is a portrayal of Pink after his breakdown and personality split. You might call him the "anti-Pink".

  • @BigSurJay

      While I would love to see these videos come more quickly as well, I do wonder if you may be disappointed with her experience with DSotM.
      The Wall, to a classically trained musician, is absolutely miles deeper (recurring musical components across the entire album) than Dark Side. It isn't even close.
      Dark Side will be a different experience for her. It is amazingly crafted for its purpose, and it does its purpose better than almost any album ever made. But to someone who analyzes music at the deepest level? The Wall is miles deeper. Going backward to Dark Side will require her to release the expectation of such music theory oriented album creation as a whole, instead focusing on its sonic experience with individual songs having their own musical theory, connected, but not fully related. She'll love it, but she will know the difference. I wonder if the Wish You Were Here album would strike that theoretical analysis need more.
      Side note, my background in this: I spent my twenties sitting in the dusty old basement of the Library at San Diego State University analyzing symphonic scores for funsies. I was a psychology major.

    Pink's madness has the creative part of his mind abandoning him. All this is playing in the mind of a person who has locked himself away so he doesn't have to deal with the pressures of real life. Initially, he was comfortable in his isolation (side 3 of the album). But his creativity, the creative part of his mind is not going to be contained. As Claudius says of Ophelia in the play Hamlet, "Poor Ophelia, divided from herself and her fair judgment, without the which we are pictures or mere beasts." So too with Pink. Curled up on the floor of a hotel room, and having conjured its escape, through the device of a doctor injecting him with stimulant's, Pink's mind takes off on a journey of terrifying proportion. As a rock star he is bolstered by the experience of holding audiences in the palm of his hand. His mind takes on the role of a totalitarian; a world we he has the ultimate control over everything including life and death.

    Amy - I've been subscribed and watching your analysis videos for a while, and I LOVE them. You are one of the few I think is getting a true understanding of "The Wall", as you seem to be reaching for the psychological connection to "Pink". Yes - the music is great....Yes the songs are individually good...But it's the overall [project that should strike home to people, and I think it misses the target in most cases. You seem to get it.

    It's been an interesting journey Amy. You have perceived so much about this album in one listen, despite it being spread over several months. I really hope when you get to the end, you'll llsten to the album in its entirety and then give us one more video summing it all up. Becuase Pink Floyd are a concept band, and this album in particular should be appreciated in one sitting. It's a dark story, but in parts it's a bit disjointed. As an album, it's a masterpiece. I think Roger Waters is the Bob Dylan of his generation, and though he's a little dark for some, his writing is simply outstanding.

    The hotel seems a metaphor. Any ideas as to what the hotel represents? Is it life? Is it death? Is it Reality? Refuge? Or our humanity?
    Describing this song as having an "acrid feel to it" is perfect. Love your locking onto the 'they' concept allusion that is so pertinent now in politics, but so inhuman, and isolated from any empathy. Trying to blame 'others' for our problems or inadequacies seems is so prevalent now.....making this song/concept album so relevant today.
    Not having really listened to it, I find this album is even darker and more cynical than I had first imagined. Having Amy along for this ride has been wonderful.

    • @tubbyduck5317
      @tubbyduck5317 3 месяца назад

      It's the literal hotel, the one that he smashes up and terrifies the groupie in during One of My Turns and Is There Anybody Out There and Hey You etc, and then later is the one he overdoses in during Comfortably Numb. When his manager and the physician and crew bring him back his mind is now altered. The drug fueled hallucinations he has during this period solidify his new persona as one of the Worms. He is no longer scared and isolated behind his wall looking for help (on the surface, deep down he is insecure and lonely still), and so as he's been dragged out to 'finish the show ' he envisions himself into the very fascism his father died fighting against. So the "original " or "normal" Pink figuratively died in that hotel room and was replaced by this new Pink who left it. The old Pink was left far far behind. In the later half of the album there's a lot of background audio of the concert goes chanting "Pink Floyd!" His godlike rockstar status and how his fans view him starry eyed combined with his character developments and the state of extremism in post war Britain are what shift the story into this new chapter. He sees himself as a fascist leader and his fans as his undyingly loyal Blackshirts. Ultimately his bigotry here is simply him lashing out at everyone and everything. Minorities are used for historical context but in Pink's mind he hates all of them, even the ones who follow his orders and agree with him because he hates himself. It was Waters way of showing how self destructive and self devouring fascism is and that it stems from insecurity and inner brokeness.

    "In the Flesh?" and "In the Flesh" are two songs by the English rock band Pink Floyd,[1] released on their 1979 album, The Wall.[2] "In the Flesh?" is the opening track, and introduces the story concept of the album. "In the Flesh" is the twenty-first song of the album, and is a reprise of the first with a choir, different verses and more extended instrumentation.[3]
    The title is a reference to the band's 1977 In the Flesh Tour, during which Roger Waters, in frustration, spat at a fan who was attempting to climb the fence separating the band from the crowd.[4][5][6]

I know it's coming, I've got the notification on for it... And, yeah, I kinda love that you're spreading this out, in a way, because it gives that anticipation. (At the same time, I kinda hate it... because I keep wanting more! But I guess you're supposed to leave us wanting more? Well, it's working! 😂)

    In keeping with Amy learning to play drums, and with her orchestral background, I'd like to see her do an in depth review of the Moody Blues "Isn't Life Strange" with full orchestration. I recommend watching a live version with an adequate attention paid to the extra drummer/percussionist. (Not all live versions for that.) It'd be nice to hear the drum teacher weigh in as well as to the need for all those different drums and cymbals. I know it's wild to watch; it's like he's doing a dance in there amongst a ring of instruments. ❤

    Also: This song made even more sense during the tour. At the beginning of the show, the MC (usually a local radio DJ) came out, rather merry, and gave the audience the rules and things.
    Right before this song, the MC emerged again, but this time in gray makeup, and HE...TALKED...MORE...LIKE...THIS.
    And the fascist show was like a bad parody of the Sgt. Pepper album cover, with the new Floyd dressed as the SS and the old Floyd playing silent instruments as if at gunpoint.

      I saw The Wall in 1980 in Dortmund but was far away from the stage which was not a problem considering the huge stage but missed a small detail. At the beginning of the show the band was in front of the wall. Years later I read that was already a surrogate band who were wearing masks and just play backed. Pink Floyd was already behind the wall and playing the music. The many layers of the music, movie and show are still still fascinating.

    7:50 - The "surrogate" is Fascist Pink.
    12:00 - You can think of the two "In the Flesh" pieces as a sort of bookend to the backstory, and from this point on we're more or less in the present. The first one says, "If you wanna find out what's hehind these cold eyes / you'll just have to claw your way through this disguise" ... He's now fully in disguise as Fascist Pink.

    Your analysis at the 8:30 mark on is correct. Pink is the one singing; there isn't a substitute band; he is still trying to hide behind The Wall that he has put up between himself and everyone else. It manifests itself in a racist, homophobic rant against all those who he perceives as having wronged him. The songs "Waiting For the Worms" and especially "The Trial", both coming up shortly, will explain this in greater detail - and bring to a resolution of sorts.

    I feel that Pink is continuing the fruitless battle against what he knows is true. Here he is actively trying to deny his past decisions, including his own neglection of his wife and self. Trying to blame 'others' We don't move forward by leaving our past behind. Without our past we are ill equipped for the future. Peace/JT

    I must admit I thought your journey through The Wall had come to an untimely end. I was thinking that this track would be difficult to get through the YT censors because of the provocative language, which is why there had been such a gap between this and Comfortably Numb. But The Wall has to be taken as 1 piece of music with many movements with each track viewed in context with the whole, not just a bunch of songs. On the subject of track naming, I always took In the Flesh? to be Pink's birth, then In the Flesh to be his rebirth after his descent into complete madness after Comfortably Numb. Good luck with Run Like Hell.

  • @richpeltier9519

    Roger has always said that the story of They Wall was inspired by the event on the Animals tour, when he was tired and ragged from the road, going through tough personal issues, trying to figure out how to follow Dark Side of the Moon and the fact that their success had put them in position to play larger vendues. In the even cited, he angrily spat on a fan that was behaving poorly in the crowd. The act stunned him. It was not him. It was an act of "othering" and that is the tool of fascism. Not acceptable.
    This song recreates that event, in the form of a comfortably numb diva, descending in anger, paranoia, madness and into fascism.
