This song is about the different stages of death. Fear, anger, acceptance etc. It's an absolute work of art.
Yes, but also the ecstasy of letting go, hence the reminiscence within the music of organic bliss. However, I do agree with your fundamental point
the real reason she was singing like that but she saw a mouse run across the studio floor
It's not. Sorry, guys, but that is an "urban legend." If you're really interested, you can find interviews with Torry herself talking about the song and the process of creating her vocals for it. She was given no clues by the band on what to sing and it was totally improvised, no mention of dying or stages of dying. ;)
@@supertrexandroidxIm pretty sure no one claimed that Clare Torry performed the vocals with death in mind. The track tells you its about death and the vocals sound like grief.
@@stevepaskey4177 I've seen plenty of people over the years phrase it along the lines of "she's singing about..", etc., and it's usually in association with Tory's singing, people explaining why the vocals are so poignant. Tory was told nothing about the subject matter. Also, I'm not convinced even Rick Wright had thought the song out as much as that at the time he wrote it. I think it likely another example of revisionism, like Sting's Every Breath You Take or McCartney's Black Bird. I know what he's said about it in connection to death, but he's also said, "I didn't, when I wrote it, think, 'This is all about death,' cos I don't think I would have written that chord structure...." Not sure he ever say's anything about a "five stages" of dying structure either - in broad outline he mentions TWO stages when he associates it with death.
The album version has never been surpassed. What Clare Torry did - improvised - is astonishing.
I agree, the Pulse concert was very good with 3 singers but, the fact that they needed 3 singers speaks volumes of Clare's recording!
One million percent absolutely right. Nothing can ever come close
@@milipro828 Absolutely. Had it not been for Claire Torry's inspiration, there would never have even been a live version. It was intended as album filler, something to close out side 1 of the album. They didn't expect a masterpiece, but they got one.
@@milipro828 I agree 100%, but my girlfriend knew I was checking out Sam Brown at Earl's Court!🏴😂
I read that when she finished recording this improvised singing the band walked out the recording studio without a word to her. She thought they were disappointed in her. Little did she realised they were struck dumb in amazement
I just love watching people discovering the magic of Pink Floyd.
Sure
Same here! Everyone needs to experience them
That last piano note that distorts upward has always been symbolic for me. It sounds like her spirit leaving her body into the ether.
nice, yes. I'd always just gone with a, is a fourth wall break>?, like a nod to the audience , your reason makes so much more sense. ha
I have heard this so many times, and still I must say, this is not music, it's a spiritual event.
Thank you for choosing the Studio Version.
This is not only a masterpiece… but it will be played at my funeral… I’m just so happy that I can say I lived in a time of Pink Floyd… I have seen them 3 times and the last concert was 1994 pulse concert at soldier’s field .
I've heard this song thousands of times and love to play it on the piano. It still manages to give me chills after all these years. Wow. ❤💔
You made the right choice. I love the Pulse version, it features three different singers, but this one was basically ad libbed in the middle of the night by a young unknown singer they brought in, not even knowing what exactly they wanted from her. She eventually got a writing credit on this.
And it is the one that us old farts grew with. 4 heart attacks later, this song means a lot more to me now.
@@gerhardbraatz6305 I was born a year after this album was released. Discovered it when I was 12 years old, and it spoke to me as if I was coming of age when it actually came out. I honestly can not think of another band or musician that transcends time and space and speaks to new audiences in the way their music does.
@@mikewatts867 My friend bought tickets to take me to see them on my birthday in 75. It was amazing. They did the DSOTM album and part of Wish you were Here. It was life changing. I imagine a whole lot of us were touched by this band.
@@gerhardbraatz6305 right there with you bro
@@mikewatts867 So glad to here it keep o enjoying and pass it on.
Loved your reaction, thank you guys. As it has already been commented, this song is said to represent the stages of grief. But, Clare Torry was brought in cold on this, and given no clue as to what the band wanted, they didn't really know. It was originally going to be a Hammond organ. "Gilmour told her that there was no lyrics for The Great Gig In The Sky. She was supposed to just sing as she thought about the passage from life to death."."Torry was surprised by the unusual request, but she tried immediately to follow the band’s guidelines. Her first performance was stopped almost immediately because she was singing “Oh yeah.” Pink Floyd had banned the lyrics. The keyword was improvising, and she tried to jump in. But that required something more than a simple chorus singer: it needed somebody able to turn themselves into an instrument and merge their voice with Wright’s sound.
On the second take, she tried to get into the song, but something was still wrong. She took a break and then tried for one last time. This time she decided not to follow the song: she would just be the song, imposing the emotional wave that moved inside her, letting go and really imagining the flow of life towards the inevitable end.". Totally improvised, can be imitated but never duplicated. We heard the woman's soul.
Again, thank for a great video. Keep up the good work.
One beauty of this song is that Everyone from any country can easily relate to the experience of listening to her voice!
Everytime Clare comes in with her first note shivers run down my spine. And they only stop after the very last one.
❤beagle❤
they basically went through the stages of grief - especially when being confronted with death - in that song with denial being the first part, where the protagonists saying "i'm not frightened of dying, any time will do" followed by Clare Torry singing through the all the other stages anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. So you were pretty on point with your wrap up :)
The vocalists name is Clare Torrey, I saw an interview with her, she said she was asked to do some vocals for pink floyd, this song was the last song on the dark side album to be polished and recorded, this was recorded on a Sunday evening in just a couple hours, this song tends to put me at peace, to put the headphones on and listen to this after a hard stressful day is better than any drug available
What a song. Cant wait for you guys to watch the live Version. ( Pulse)
I find watching the singers to be so much better than just listening to a singer. I feel the Pulse version to be so much better just for the visuals.
When I was 18, I sat with my lover listening to this song and was amazed to see her start to cry. I could not understand. NOW, I cry every time I hear it.
I have the Dark Side of the Moon, in its entirety, on my playlist. The album consists of one song, one message, but is told in many chapters. It speaks of the life experience, from the womb to the tomb. It starts with a strong heartbeat and ends with a fading heartbeat. The journey in-between is amazing. This masterpiece never grows old and will continue to enhance the lives of those who follow us to that great gig in the sky.
The PULSE live version is a must. The three backing singers sang this with so much passion
Delicate Sound of Thunder version is better than Pulse...
This is better than both
Another fantastic reaction! You totally grasped the emotion of death. The anger, the fight, the acceptance and finally, the peace. I am so impressed with the two of you.
You nailed it! Which shows how well Claire was able to convey thought and emotion through just raw vocals.
Its the rare moment when an improvised vocalization was captured in it’s entirety that it set the standard to which it has never been duplicated.
You chose wisely. The album version has never been surpassed in my opinion. It was a magical, one of a kind moment in the history of music. Thank you for the reaction!
I have watched several of your reactions to Pink Floyd and couldn't wait to find this one. Both of you are so enjoyable to listen to. Not just to the music, but each other. Look forward to seeing many more
I had to drive from California to Arizona overnight trying to get to my hometown before my sister died. This song came on about 1am in the middle of the desert. I was able to arrive in time though. Such a powerful song.
The genius of Pink Floyd!✌🏻
You don’t need drugs or hallucinogenics, Pink Floyd’s music will take you on the best ride. Stopped drugs years ago but this music always puts me on the best high.
I am enjoying your reactions.
Wonderful reaction/analysis! I'm glad you enjoyed them. :)
I just recently came across your reaction page. Wanted to let you know that I love watching you both appreciate so many different types of music! Y’all are genuine and such amazing humans! Thank you and always looking forward to seeing new reactions. Sending love and happiness from Illinois USA ❤
I love this whole album so much 💕 this is my favorite song on the album Believe it or not... It's been my favorite song since I've been a little boy in the 70s... My sister and her friends would play this in our living room and I would lay on a pillow next to the speakers and listen to this whole album and soak it in... I have the CD and the album, my whole family loves it and have been listening to it since 1973..
Clare Torry deserves your first reaction to this masterpiece!!
Studio version can not be beat. This is just good music, and the volcals on that woman is outstanding
Really enjoyed your reaction! Thank you and cheers from Canada.
Clare Torry did the studio version, Richard Wright said she basically did it in one take. I don't believe there is a live version with Clare. Despair at the time of someone's passing is always the feeling I get with this song. Great job reacting to it.
There is, in fact, a live version with Clare: ruclips.net/video/VGX7RxsTNmo/видео.html
@@Tarkus_ Thanks!!
@@Tarkus_ .... it's not as good though.
Donna Summer was the same, her studio nick name was ‘One take Donna’
The live version with Roger Waters (in the 90s?) is a real disappointment.
No matter...Clare will ever be etched in history with one of the greatest vocal improvisations ever.
She had two tries at it, so what we hear is 2 takes edited together.
And NO, it is NOT (and has never been) about "the 5 Stages of Death" (which is mistakenly worded and actually from the book 'The Five Stages of Grief', not Death). It is about Death, period.
You are listening to music that will be good generations from now. Timeless music.
I was a teenager listening to this for the first time. It blew my mind. The meaning is beautiful and at the same time really intense. It was also the first time that I had heard a singer use their voice as an instrument. The album is beyond amazing. For me it will never be surpassed.
For me it's about being born living a life full of love joy and pain and then accepting the fact that one day we all die portrayed through this incredible peice of musical genius pink floyd wow fabulous love your reaction beautiful people
Vocal parts in the song are performed by Clare Torry who is a session singer. In total, only two records were taken and the first take was used. There's a lot to be said for Torry's performance and the sequel is interesting too but it has already been mentioned in other comments.
Spoken Parts:
(At 0:39 -of original recording-) "And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do, I don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it - you've got to go sometime." - Gerry O'Driscoll, Abbey Road Studios janitorial "browncoat".
(At 3:33 -of original recording-, faintly) "I never said I was frightened of dying." - Patricia 'Puddie' Watts, wife of road manager Peter Watts.
The members of the band went around asking questions and recording responses from people working inside Abbey Road (the famous studio where the album was recorded) at the time. Among the questions, they were asked "Are you afraid of dying?". They used these two above in the recording from among the answers given.
This masterpiece was created by beautiful gentleman Richard Wright (R.İ.P.) Wright recorded it as a chord progression for the electronic organ in 1972, a year before The Dark Side Of The Moon (which is the album containing this original recording) , under the title of "The Mortality Sequence". Masterpieces are not always innate, sometimes they can also be created by dusting off a substrate and polishing it a bit..
Bravo 👏 👏 👏
I really do hope that you take a look at the David Gilmour live in Gdansk concert ❤
This is Richard Wright's creation. In collaboration with Clare Torry of course
It takes 3 singers to do this some live where it took Clair Tory 2 takes of improvising!
Great choice. And another great reaction to Pink Floyd. More please 😊
As a 50 yr listener so happy you did the original we hear Claire Torrie did this in 3 takes. It is about the death expierience. I did not know that till reactions. I always went to it when I was feeling so many emotions. Always make me make sense of what I am feeling. So different to use a voice as a instrument. .... sorry any other version will never make it this!!!!! Cheers
Re-watching your reaction to this gem again. The remarkable work of art that Clare Torry pulled off with this song with minimal retakes and almost wholly improvised is not to be surpassed. It truly is astonishing. This version will always wear the crown of best version. However, I would enjoy you checking out the Pulse version. Thee singers do segments of the "vocals" part. With the live version, you can see the emotion, angst, fury, anxiety, resignation, etc. that is put into singing the song by the back up singers.
Wow, loved your interpretation of this song, I've been listening to this since it first came out and now seeing others meanings to it is interesting. I felt that your initial reaction was shock, but then settled into it. I like to listen to this to take me on a journey. I love your reactions guys, particularly when you do the Aussie stuff 🦘
Vibe was the right word. The vibrational tones
Chaos to the calm, so wonderful.
I remember first listening to this…brought out so many emotions…felt like crying…don’t know why…maybe dealing with my own crap…
Next, definitely do the Pulse concert version. You will love it.
Jeez, If you get chance listen to the same song from the "Pulse" concert, its absolutely mindblowing ! !.
Great Choice!!
I think you got it. You heard the singer's pain and anger, and then acceptance. The song is about the emotions around death. I like to think of it as an emotional representation of the experience of dying (and moving on the the great gig in the sky). It's the last song on the album side which begins with "Breathe" (life)
Just watched your tool reaction. Tool is the modern plink Floyd. This is one of my favorite songs by Pink Floyd and thank you for your reaction
No "right" or "wrong," folks; positive performances in both studio (original, unre-mastered album) and live versions. True music lovers can easily accept both as works of art. Will eagerly await your reaction to the Pulse concert version (live) with three female vocalists.
This “song” is a story, a story of loss and how we emote, or should emote, our grief. I can’t listen to it it without entering into this woman’s profound loss. My interpretation is that one of a woman who has lost her child and is moving through her grief. Probably one of the most meaningful songs out there without one word spoken. 💔
The chord change at 6:53 always brings a tear to my eye but I can't describe why. I saw an interview with Richard Wright where he talked about composing this piece and how he had been waiting to use certain chords he had heard on a Miles Davis record. This was the piece he finally used them on.
i am a metal guy and more extreme but some bands are extrasensorial feeling and Pink Floyd its the most perfect and diferent and unic
as usual great reactions - thanks
The Symphony has had the same affect on a person for centuries -- you feel it. Pink Floyd managed to capture those feelings though their methods with rock music. No words, you just have to experience it.
You chose well! Claire Torre did not tour with them. She just did this studio version. With very little guidance. She did 2 1/2 takes & left. The ones live are not the same person in the studio...
Also, IIRC- it is the transitioning from life to heaven. So, you hit the nail on the head.
spot on, with your analysis. you understand it
The best well crafted performance ever captured in a studio. 50 years of listening to this album has not diminished its impact one bit. Its a great comment on humanity
Make me happy and scared at the same time, add a little sadness... That was my first reaction as well.
This song always felt like three parts 1) Born and running out of the gate 2) midlife working refining 3) retirement fading away.
The Great Gig in the Sky is a musicians euphemism for Heaven, or the afterworld. This song immediately follows the tolling of the iron bell in Time. It can be thought of as the stages of grief in death, from denial through acceptance.
You chose rightly. With Pink Floyd my preference is always studio version first. That’s not to say that some live performances are not better.p
You nailed what this song is about. I have lost two sisters in the last two years and this song lets me still feel them.
I think it is a must you do as well the most epic masterpiece from Pink Floyd. It is 'Echoes'. The studio version is fantastic. For the live version I strongly propose David Gilmour live in Gdansk.
I love this. Your reactions at the first pause was priceless. My favorite Pink Floyd song.
Really nice reaction, guys.
have to react to this live version > "Pink Floyd - The Great Gig In The Sky (PULSE Restored & Re-Edited)"
You two are amazing 🍻
I am not frightened of dying, you know
Any time will do, I don't mind
Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime
I never said I was frightened of dying
"The Great Gig in the Sky" is the fifth track on The Dark Side of the Moon, a 1973 album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. The song features music by keyboard player Richard Wright and wordless vocals by session singer Clare Torry. It is one of only three Pink Floyd songs to feature vocals from an outside artist. It was released as a digital single in February 2023 to promote The Dark Side of the Moon 50th Anniversary box set.
Not a single word .. but most and everybody's souls are touched ....
Thanks very much for your reactions to Pink Floyd. i love to hear you both let out your hearts to Floyd because i love them
I think in most cases it's best to react to the studio versions of tunes first. They set the standard by which you can judge a live performance. Imo, of course! I certainly think that goes for this tune.
Excellent, yes please do the live version it's fantastic you will be amazed, three cheers to you two thanks
I believe the band asked Claire to sing on this without telling her what they wanted. She said she approached it as if her voice were a lead guitar and sang it how she felt a guitarist would play a solo. I don't think I've seen a live version where they hadn't split up that vocal across at least 3 singers. One of the reasons this album is one of the best selling of all time. Great Gig in the Sky is my favourite track on the album. Great choice. Such a shame they all fell out with each other. They were an immense band.
Again Pink Floyd are musical gods and have tapped into the vibrations of the universe. They can touch your soul and make you feel whatever emotion they want using their instruments. So let the music wash over your soul and let the emotions out don’t be afraid to cry or laugh or be scared or be curious because they will make you feel all those things and more.
Watch the live Pulse version and you will see these three wonderful backing singers in all their glory they are a joy to watch
nicely worked out - well done
Please check out the LIVE version of this song from the PULSE CONCERT.
Studio version is many times better. For many reasons.
@@Ontariosound The studio version is absolutely outstanding, but so is the Pulse version.
This is why Pink Floyd will always be musically relevant in the future they don,t fit in any genre. They stand alone. All of today's musical trends like Country. Rock and Roll. Heavy Metal. Punk Rock will all be a footnote in history but like Beethoven. Mozart and Bach. They will never be forgotten
Love seeing first reactions to PF. You two are doing great. Keep it up. And you're right, there's a lot more.
I think this is the best version to listen to first, done by a single voice adds to it. The live versions are also good, usually done with 3 singers, not all with the same 3, each of them are the same song but somewhat different.
Great reaction! You really made some good points and expressed yourselves very openly and Pink Floyd's music is made for that! For reflective and deeper meaning. Keep the Floyd reactions coming! All the best! Peace.
Choosing the album version was the correct choice. Period.
An Italian couple discussing in depth the intricacies and fine nuances in music. I couldn't do such a thing in Italian, chapeaux to you both!
It´s necessary to hear the studio version first, because what Clare Torry did on this track is not just singing background, it is doing her own composition. The Pulse-Girls do copy this nicely live.
Blue oyster cult, Don't fear the reaper should be the next part of this song. If you don't know it You will love it and it's well worth the time listening to it.
Its like a Picasso painted with musical notes.
Your being from Europe, a couple more Pink Floyd songs you may relate to, talk about, and enjoy music only Pink Floyd can produce and write. Great Day For Freedom, from Pulse when the wall came down, and ‘Us And Them’ studio version, wrote during the Vietnam war.
The live version is definitely more intense and worth watching.
Released 50 years ago... Pink Floyd my personal all-time favorite band!!
they sure set the bar high.....
you have the most great cover band from Pink Floyd. Brit Floyd and please see them live. i saw. the most closer to floyd experience i ever had
Watch live performances of this song it's amazing
WOW IS ALL I CAN SAY AFTER THIS IVE HEAERD IT A MILLION TIMES BUT THATS ALL I CAN SAY!!!!!IM 60 NOW I MAY HAVE 10 YRS LEFT ON THIS PLANET BUT THEY WILL BE THE BEST IVE EVER HAD!!!
Love that part where the woman go ahhhhh woahhhh woa woa woaaaaaaaaaaa
PF isn’t defined by what you feel…It only matters that you feel, SOMETHING……The rest, is up to you….
I shared a joint with some associates back when this album first appeared, I was 15 years old...
A guy placed some phones over my head and said listen to this - I was quite literally, blown away!
