- "The Great Gig in the Sky" is a track from Pink Floyd's eighth studio album, "The Dark Side of the Moon," released in 1973. The song is primarily an instrumental piece with vocalizations and a prominent piano solo. It features Clare Torry's powerful and emotive vocal performance, which consists of wordless, improvised singing.
The track serves as a pivotal moment in the concept album, contributing to the overall theme of mortality, existentialism, and the human experience. The lyrics of the album explore various aspects of life, including time, money, mental illness, and death.
"The Great Gig in the Sky" is known for its haunting and emotional impact, with Torry's vocals conveying a range of intense emotions. The song is often regarded as one of the standout tracks on "The Dark Side of the Moon" and is considered a classic in the progressive rock genre.
"Pulse" is a live album by Pink Floyd, released in 1995. The album features recordings from the band's 1994 Division Bell tour and includes performances from various concerts. The tour was in support of their fourteenth studio album, "The Division Bell."
One of the most notable aspects of the "Pulse" release is the inclusion of a live version of "The Dark Side of the Moon" in its entirety. The album also features other classic Pink Floyd tracks, showcasing the band's skill in live performances.
The "Pulse" concert was accompanied by a visually stunning light show and elaborate stage setup, including the iconic circular screen known as the "Pink Floyd prism." The band's lineup during the Division Bell tour consisted of David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, along with supporting musicians.
In addition to the audio release, there was a video release of "Pulse" that included footage from the concerts. The video featured visual effects and animations synchronized with the music, providing a memorable audio-visual experience for Pink Floyd fans.
Overall, "Pulse" is highly regarded by Pink Floyd enthusiasts and is considered a significant part of the band's discography, capturing the essence of their live performances during the Division Bell tour.
Just talented singers/musicians displaying their art.......no autotune/backing tracks/gizmos......just pure talent. The whole Pulse Concert is a life-changer.
Yep…you don’t find these types on America’s got talent or the X factor, no commercialism here, only hard work real talent and vision.
I attended a show on the Pulse tour and it is still the best show I've ever been to. Masterpiece.
@@timwebb9658 saw it twice, RFK and East Rutherford...was AMAZING. Second time got a full second set of Dark Side of the Moon..was awesome
The most beautiful song in the world.
💯
never has more been said without speaking a word
Rick Wright, Pink Floyd keyboardist, asked Durga Mcbroom, a background singer for Pink Floyd World Tour, to sing this song at his funeral. She did that too, as she confirmed to me personally. But there is still the unconfirmed rumor that she was accompanied on the piano by John Lord
Thanks for this. Would be great to find out if that actually took place, wouldn't it?
They sang all the stages of grief without one word. If Pink Floyd does not move you, then you are a robot. Pink Floyd are brilliant, individually and collectively. I've loved their music since I was 14 and the love goes deeper every single year❤
You need to do the whole Pulse concert start to finish!!!! Change your life forever!!!
I got to see the Pulse Tour live in concert. What a privilege that was. Will never forget it.
Another spectacular reaction!! 40+ years after first hearing this song, the emotions never change. No other song, (outside of gospel music), moves me the way this song does. Can't explain it. Have stopped trying to understand it. I just know it's real. For me, it's the most spiritual song in rock and roll history.
Everything you say makes perfect sense. Pink Floyd has the ability to play with the subconscious and feelings. At the beginning it is said that you shouldn't be afraid of dying. And that is exactly what is described by the voices. There is something about dying. Phase 1: Not wanting to believe.Phase 2: Anger.Phase 3: Negotiation.Phase 4: Depression.Phase 5: Acceptance. And that's exactly what you find in this song
Exactly and, whether you listen to the live or studio version, those emotions are demonstrated purely by the sound of the singer's voice(s).
It's difficult to listen to this and not be as emotional.
Pink Floyd is beyond so many other groups.
There really hasn't and probably won't be another group like them.
They're music geniuses.
Was told about the five stages of dying and was listening to the great gig all in same month back in 1972(?)
When a deep friend passed and he (we) know it was going to happen ( not medical)
Very deep to grow up with this reality.
Phony spastic reaction 😂
The blonde signer was Sam Browne, she did her part justice. Claire Torrey sang and created the whole original.
Thanks for that. I didn’t think it was Claire because she only did the album as far as I knew. Sam is doing pretty well here, but I don’t think anyone could match what Claire did on that take, not even her. What Claire did was original and spontaneous and insanely gifted. She just went somewhere that she had never been before and blew the doors off it. I truly believe it was a one time thing for her.
hi i saw claire sing this at knebworth 75. to think she just went into a booth and smashed this out with no music. and walked away with 30 quid.
Yes she did an excellent job. The emotion is present
Sam Brown - there is no e on her name.
@@orwellknew9112 Her name was Clare.
Clare Torrey sang the original. What a bloody angel!
She shook my world when I first heard The Great Gig In The Sky in the seventies, best version for sure
i saw them live on this tour in Oakland in 1994. Unbelievable performance all night. Best concert I've ever been to. It felt like a religious experience.
As fantastic as those wonderful women were.
Clare did it all by herself in a single take I am told.
[edit} three takes after hearing the melody
Yes , Clare Tory was awesome, best version imho
My butt was center stage 7th row back. Love both the studio and live versions. To be there to see this....the energy .....the absolute connection to "all that is".......floyd should always be live. Pink Floyd channels the universes energy and they tranduce the energy into music and then it direclty touches your soul. Welcome to the power of music at it's finest.
Great reaction 👏.
This is how without words the song can portray the three stages of dying.
1. Fear
2. Acceptance
3. Peace/ release
These three world class singers paid homage to the original studio version (Claire Torry)the respect it deserves.
Reminiscent of Bob Hoskins' acting in the final scene of The Long Good Friday. Who needs words with acting like that and singing like this!!
Now that's music my friend. Thanks for sharing with those who have never heard.
My ultimate fav band of all time and Im 60 yrs young. A forever fan. Such a beautiful and powerful song, which is about life, gradually descending into death. Denial..Anger...refusing to "go gently into that good night."...Depression...Acceptance, "Peace". Best concerts ever done.Thanx so much, Peace
Agree !
next one from Pulse concert 1994 - Coming back to Life . = 3 good guitar solo , 🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶
I was on a Pink Floyd concert in Germany in the late 1980s. The best concert I have been. Im still impressed today.
I’m jealous.
I was possibly at the same show. I went to the one at the Festhall in Frankfurt. It was epic!
@@lanpartyanimal5215 I was in Stuttgart.
😂 phony spastic reaction , late to the game bubba!
Claire Torrey “sunk her part by improvising! Now Floyd need three ladies to replicate her piece!”
The song is about dying....get it...the great gig in the sky?
I thought my man was about to leave his body. Thank you for showing us physically what we all feel internally every time we hear this exquisite piece of musical emotion.
Comfortably Numb from pulse concert also Sorrow a must watch. Great reaction!
it's not often in life see and hear absolute perfection.
Pure female soul. How can you not love it.
Great reaction to a beautiful song… I saw this concert or tour in 1994… I will never forget it… I Spent $70 for 2 tickets at that time in Chicago. I also want this song played at my funeral… the song is about the final stages of passing… of course you need to listen to the whole Dark Side Of The Moon album to understand… but the first part you were right is anger and fighting death… 2nd part is transitioning and being stuck between heaven and earth and not wanting to leave as the soul is conflicted… and part 3 is the final exception of letting go and the soul stops fighting and rest’s for the last time. I have seen Pink Floyd 3 times in my life time including the WALL concert my favorite band of all time.
The whole time you sat in silence, I kinda knew what you were saying.😂
Great reaction, you definitely earned my sub😁
The embracing of death... the denial, the fight, the pain, the acceptance, and finally the peace...
This song is basically about being told you are going to die.. going through the stages of anger, denial, etc all the way through to acceptance... no words... just emotions.
It was the greatest show I ever got to see
Check out the same song on
"The Delicate Sound Of Thunder"
Different singers , each one amazing!
It's the best version to me.
I was there and it was as amazing live as in this video.
You got the emotions right on. It's about death and acceptance
WOW no words in this tune, just pure musical talent. Would love to see a rapper try this. Gee, why do I think rappers are NOT MUSICIANS, they just talk to a beat. They are lyracists not musicians. Many great song writers wrote lyrics much better than rappers. Rap is for people with no musical talent.
You aren't old enough to "feel the Great Gig In The Sky" as something maybe coming...maybe soon. BTW There was no hate....only the universe.
You should really watch the documentary on how this song was originally recorded.... it is a truly amazing tale...
Great reaction and I agree with the different stages of emotions with each brilliant singer. I like the blond most not because she's a better singer but I just love that raw voice she used.
Honey, it will hit you this way every time. It gets in your head and your soul. Never gets old! Not bad for background singers. Sam, Durga and Claudia.
Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Richard Wright only wrote the music for a different project prior to the songs concept ever being thought of which was the results of Gilmour being asked if P.F. would ever do a song about religion
Results are legendary.
We are simply blessed to be here to enjoy this level of music... music *SO* intense that there are times we are drawn to it, and times where we cannot listen to it at all, because of the emotions it can pull up.
David Gilmour, while so highly regarded, is *STILL* underrated in my opinion. His playing is absolutely flawless. For the music Pink Floyd creates, his playing cannot be improved upon... it is, in a word, perfection. I dont know of another band that has the effect on its listener that Pink Floyd has. Calling Pink Floyd 'one of a kind' is an understatement. They are like no other. ❤
Theres another live version from 1987' three different singers but equally moving
Yup. Been there. Done that. 12 times. Lol. I'm soooo lucky.
Great reaction, now Comfortably Numb Pulse concert remastered, it will blow your mind
This is not a good performance. If you want to hear the best rendition of Great Gig, then you need to watch the Delicate Sound of Thunder rendition. It has Rachael Fury, Durga McBroom and Margaret Taylor. No other rendition is even close.

5:57 love how here David Gilmour, his part done, sits back and takes in the beauty of the final vocals.
One of the greatest recordings of all time - I listened to this in a pool floating around in Turkey on holiday long ago, not long after Bluetooth headphones came out (had the receiver under my hat! ) - Amazing, track after track of one of the greatest bands every to walk this planet.
The first part is the fear of death, the second part is acceptance of death. The final part is letting go, and letting death embrace you.
The best reaction to this song by anyone brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's one of the finest PCs. of music made in my lifetime. It is a song about the three stages of dealing with death. Each woman deals with the emotions. 1st singers emotion was anger . 2nd singer it was sadness. And the last singer's emotion was acceptance. All three women singing used one vowel as the word the vowel O . It is an amazing song with way more depth than most people realize.
Sorrow, hurt, then solice, Pink Floyd, masters of thier art😊
Pulse is a great concert, but it’s not Clare Torry singing this song. She only sang it in the studio in the early 70’s. Pulse is a great version but even three women could not sing it like Clare. The studio album version is just simply magical and meant to be. Great reaction!
At death, we want so much to hang on to what we know. In the end, one must be resigned to the jump from being encapsulated in time, to the eternal. How many songs can you name that DON"T need a translation. Maybe something from Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven?
The fact this is impactful , without any lyrics so many years later, really says a lot about this bands ability to keep us thinking and talking is worth diving down the rabbit hole. Considering when this was written and how things have not really changed should be a red flag for us. Check out Keep Talking, pretty much ask us to just listen to each other and we can work together to try and solve it despite our differences.

I feel it was the struggle of dying. And then finally feeling peace. 🙏🏼😞
Real heavy strong powerful awesome true ART !
Every little thing was plotted out by these guts to a ridiculous degree. These guys are the personification of perfectionists.
Great observations. Claudia, the lady at the end got acceptance, and resignation which is the more subdued part, and she carried it off beautifully, this is often overlooked buy some narrow minded people who see this as some sort of competition rather than the overall classic performance that it is.
listen to the album version. it's better. this is great, but the album version is legendary and could never be matched. ever. it's amazing. yes, it's studio and it was done in 3 takes but it doesn't matter.
I think she firgot the lyrics. Cuz that's what i do when i forgetthe lyrics.
Impressive singing.i prefer the original personally
the voices are musical instruments was at the concert in Rotterdam sept 1994
and remember, the original was 1 woman, this epic version took 3
Sam Brown up first, check her out singing Horse To The water on the Concert For George ( Harrison)
Nobody does it like Pink Floyd. Beautiful vocals
Dude... I think, I'm not sure, did you just have an eargasum?
One of the greatest songs ever, though I like the original version on Dark Side of the Moon better
There are a million other songs with lyrics that say far less than this song
What gets me is that every reaction uses the live version instead of the Clare Torrey original
Slaps you in the soul, doesn't it. I call it being, Soul Slapped.
What an AMAZING night it was to see that show live!!!
Love your reactions!
the 1st vocalist is Sam (Samantha) Brown.......many prefer Clare Torrey's vocals on the album version, but this performance live is very moving, as well........😍

You nailed it, it was about emotions from Death
if i remember this song is about grief over someone dying.. I think. :)
never has so much been said without a single word spoken
I pretty much like this story, not sure if it is true and who actually was it who told it :
“The Great Gig In The Sky” - Pink Floyd
The vocals were done by a petite British lady studio singer brought in by the Producer Allan Parsons named Claire Torrie. She did not know what they wanted her to sing. David Gilmour suggested she use her voice like a Saxophone… it worked great.
I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call god. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. The speaking at the start was recorded at Apple records with various employees answering a list of questions next to a small recording machine. The question was…“Are You afraid Of Dying? This one was an elderly gentleman who was a janitor in the place. Roger thought it would fit in the song at the beginning so there it is. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz................................. nothing to do with this cut.
"What a performance Doc!"
Beautiful reaction my friend.
Love your reaction to my favorite band!
check Pink Floyd - Welcome to the machine
Sam Brown absolutely nails it
A song I want to hear as I'm about 2 die.xx❤
This version is terrible watch the original
Think ye milked that a bit didn't ye?
Hey Rivaldo....check out the original studio version of this song on The Dark Side of The Moon album.
I believe I have already, Ive done a full album reaction of "The Dark Side of The Moon album." it is on my channel
i search the original video of this do have it ?
As much as I love the raw, wild beauty of the original, I prefer the polish of this one. It never ceases to make me cry.

The singer is Sam Brown!
It's supposedly about the stages your soul goes through after death.beginning with rejecting the idea your dead to acceptance
5 stages of grief
The blond lady is Joe Bowns daughter he was a 50s 60s pop idle here in the uk. Sadly she had to stop singing because of a medical problem
Her mum Vicki was also an accomplished singer and did the backing vocals on a song called no charge in the 70s, I absolutely adore Sam brown she's fabulous
NOW THATS A REACTION! Teach that to the others that just sit there and listen but dont feel it please. ❤😅
Lol, maybe that is their version of a genuine reaction. when I listen to music I listen to every single thing
For 50 years...🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶❤️
Not the best rendition.
Dont remember hearing this one from Pink Floyd. Love how the two backup singers were forefront. Love they were different ethnicities. I love how all members are important. As with any Pink Floyd song, the interpretation is up to you despite any words sung. Nice reaction. Keep going.
Three singers.

Just saw that. Lol

Us and Them 👍 Shine on you crazy Diamond 👍 was going to do a list but all their songs are pretty amazing,Dark side of the moon and magic mushrooms(psylocibin) were made for each other 🤷🏼♂️
Pink Floyd, one of the most famous bands in history, playing backup band to one of the greatest vocal performances ever.
The real shame is 2 men could not get along to continue to make the best music the world ever heard. 😢
One of them suffered from severe mental illness, don't hate! Support
The pre-recording at the start mentions death and no reason to fear it. To me, the three singers expressed the "5 stages of grief". Their music is timeless. I'm amazed by it today, just as much back in the 70's when I first started listening to them. It's been my favorite band ever since.
This was btw.: her most popular song as far as i know, and i even bought the CD back in the days :
Sam Brown Stop

and yes i know, the original was sung by Clare Torry and all props to her for creating this fantastic thing.
That's how we all felt
it's about dying
