The keyboardist is Rick Wright, the "quiet one", I'm tickled that you favor him. PF wouldn't have been PF without his keyboards and compositions. Rick wrote this song when they were touring a lot, and he wondered how he would feel if he had to die so young - plane crash, car accident, who knows, anything could happen. How would a young person feel to have to die with their life unfulfilled? So there are no lyrics, just the wordless emotions of a person as she dies - denial, anger, despair, and then a gradual acceptance until she finally slips away. It is incredibly beautiful, and a fine example of what Rick brought to the band.

The studio version with Clare Torry is the definitive version, but you can’t beat seeing it performed live and seeing the passion that the singers bring to it. For something a little different you could try ‘Keep Talking’ from Pulse! Thank you for your warm and heartfelt reactions!

You must check out the album version. Clare Torry was just given the chords and a few ideas (the five stages of death) and she improvised the whole thing in two and a half takes!!

and this is a totally differenrt performance in very different circumstances. I cant understand why you Torry snobs cant help but knock anything else that isnt the original. Its becoming boring beyond measure. Why are you lot incapable of just appreciating a performance for what it is instead of having to slag it off????

@@stevem-h3562 It's not a case of "listen only to the original only", it's simply the best. This is one of the few Pink Floyd songs that the album version is the best, that there isn't a live version that is better. Sorry, it takes 3 to do the job of one in this one. Like having a great hamburger- it's good, but steak beats it every time. This song relies on the mood and technique of the singer more than many others. In this case, it just feels "off", nonorganic.

    • @flubblert
      @flubblert 6 месяцев назад

They did not tell her about five stages of death. They simply told her to improvise, and after a while of feeling totally lost about what they wanted, Dave finally told her to think about death. She did her thing and left shaking her head and thinking this would never see the light of day. And the rest as they say, is history.

Rick Wright had this to say:
"I didn't, when I wrote it, think, 'This is all about death,' cos I don't think I would have written that chord structure. I get so excited when I hear Clare singing. For me, it's not necessarily death. I hear terror and fear and huge emotion, in the middle bit especially, and the way the voice blends with the band. The way it was mixed helps."
The book about the stages of death was very new at the time and would not have been an inspiration.
To me it sounds way more like a simple struggle against death and acceptance of it eventually.

Great reaction, no, you shouldn't know what it's about, the bigger the surprise.
It's one of Pink Floyd's "craziest" songs, but with everything that goes with it, it's definitely one of the top songs, with (background) voices that show what they can do.
I think you don't have to decide which of the Pink Floyd songs is the best (at least that's how I feel), but depending on your mood you choose one or another.

Vocalists were Sam Browne, Durga McBroom and Claudia Fontaine in that order. David's instrument was a pedal steel guitar, a descendant of a lap steel guitar or slide guitar. It started off as a Hawaiian technique of playing a normal guitar using a slide or 'steel', then evolved to sit in the player's lap, then acquired legs and pedals to change the pitch. I love David's playing on that.

When Claire Torrey asked what she should be doing, she was told to "sing as if she were an instrument herself."[6] Torry performed two complete takes, the second more emotional than the first, but when David Gilmour asked for a third take she stopped halfway through, feeling that she was becoming repetitive and had already done the best she could. The final album track was assembled from all three takes.

As a fan of Pink Floyd since 68 and somebody who has everything they ever recorded on vinyl I cannot understand why so many people are enamored by the Pulse concert. I had the opportunity to attend five of their concerts and the pulse does not represent what the band was prior.
It can't compare except for who have no clue.
So I'll listen to Pink Floyd reactions from you when you quit doing the Pulse concert.
After all the great music was produced a couple decades earlier before all the attitudes and Division. Also I prefer the old days before pitch correction and Auto-Tune. another reason it is recorded in 440 agitating frequency instead of the 432 which is much more calming and relaxing. As most all their old music.

This was btw.: her most popular song as far as i know, and i even bought the CD back in the days :
    Sam Brown Stop
    ruclips.net/video/DWKwnfBtzXg/видео.html
and yes i know, the original was sung by Clare Torry and all props to her for creating this fantastic thing.
I pretty much like this story, not sure if it is true and who actually was it who told it :
“The Great Gig In The Sky” - Pink Floyd
The vocals were done by a petite British lady studio singer brought in by the Producer Allan Parsons named Claire Torrie. She did not know what they wanted her to sing. David Gilmour suggested she use her voice like a Saxophone… it worked great.
I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call god. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. The speaking at the start was recorded at Apple records with various employees answering a list of questions next to a small recording machine. The question was…“Are You afraid Of Dying? This one was an elderly gentleman who was a janitor in the place. Roger thought it would fit in the song at the beginning so there it is. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus.

Sam Brown and the girls did a good job here, BUT you REALLY need to listen to the album version. Trust me your ears will bless you! Claire Torrey is extraordinary, she will sear your soul!

I have been to 4 of their concerts. I love the original Clare Torry version best. Still, if you wanna see the best version of this live, I would have to say the 1988 World Tour filmed for Delicate Sound of Thunder has the best three female vocalists: ruclips.net/video/Ke9y_yfwJtg/видео.htmlfeature=shared This song is about death, and you can hear her emotions as she goes through the stages of death. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

Whilst a great live version, this is one of the very few Pink Floyd tracks where you need to listen to the studio version, where a 25 year old Clare Torry improvised the whole thing with minimal briefing in just 2 1/2 takes. It's never been bettered or equalled. You need to see this video where Clare describes the whole thing in her typically English, self-deprecating way. ruclips.net/video/mIW7xZSlZoM/видео.htmlsi=pBnAMNHL1o46rFcY .I think she was paid a session fee of £30 for it, and that was it, but in later years she was given co-writing credits and received the sizable royalties she so deserved.

@@fifidurand7421 - OK, point taken! All PF music is brilliant on the studio versions, but some of the tracks performed live, primarily at Pulse 1994, Knebworth 1990 and Gdansk 2006, are equally brilliant, and IMHO Comfortably Numb from Pulse is the definitive version. However, the performance of The Great Gig by Clare Torry on the studio version has never been equalled, not even by Clare herself during her rare (and brilliant) live performances, and that is what I was trying to say!.

Since you are such a fan of the keyboarder Richard Wright, you will probably be sad to hear that he already died in 2008 in London.😢

Blah blah blah, Claire Torry. These three ladies performed this in one take., Live! No rerecording, remastering. These three ladies are the Supreme Performance of this song. They knocked it out of the park.

Why do people recommend this song without specifying the album version? There’s nothing wrong with this but first listen should be the original. Literally one of the great solo vocal performances on a rock album ever.
