This song is intended to describe the five stages of the dying process. Richard Wright, the keyboardist of the. During his lifetime, Richard Wright, the band's keyboardist, asked Durga Mc Broom, one of the backing singers on the Pink Floyd tour, to sing this song at his funeral. I have personal contact with Durga and she confirmed it to me. But according to unconfirmed information, she was accompanied on the piano by none other than John Lord from Deep Purple.

These three are loosely following the original that Clare Torry did on the 1973 Dark Side of The Moon! Claire improvised this whole thing after starting off going ooh baby ooh baby and the Pink Floyd guys didn't like that so they stopped her and said that's not what we want. Then Claire on her own decided to make her voice like an instrument and make the sounds of an instrument and she vocalized the original On the Dark Side of the Moon into one brilliant vocalization in two and a half takes over Rick Wright's beautiful musical piece! Following that she kind of felt embarrassed and left not thinking her vocalization would ever see the light of day and it's actually become one of the most popular songs on the album!!

"The Great Gig in the Sky" is the fifth track on The Dark Side of the Moon, a 1973 album by English rock band Pink Floyd. The song features music by keyboard player Richard Wright and improvised, wordless vocals by session singer Clare Torry.

Here the three singers reproduce what Clare Torry improvised for the album Dark Side of the Moon.
Originally, this track was only intended to fill the remaining space on side A of the vinyl.
What a great way to fill an empty space.

The Dark Side Of The Moon album stayed on the billboard top 100 LP chart for 987 weeks. That's 19 years ! Greatest album ever made. The original Great Gig was sung by one singer Clare Tory. Miss Tory nailed it on her second try.

Clare Torry improvised the the original recording on the spot. All she had to go on was David telling her to think about death. I believe she did one and a half takes, stopped and told the band that they had what they need. The first take is always the best! That performance became the template of what every artist since has tried to be faithful to, yet add their own twist to it, including Clare Torry who has never sang this song the same as her original. She too plays around with it. By the way, the blond singer is Sam Brown who was a Pop Artist in her own right. She had a hit single in the UK called "Stop" which went to #1 there. When she was offered a job as a back up singer for this series of Pink Floyd concerts she jumped at the chance to work with them!

Clare was a session singer. They played the music first and next the told her there is no lyrics . She did 2 takes and started a third where she stop and said she couldn't add to it. Left thinking they didn't like it. Music by Rick Wright for a movie and the director said it was to said for what he like it.

Hello from Switzerland, there are certainly a lot of "unusual" pieces in the music world, but only very few come close to this one, it is simply a masterpiece of its kind.
If I imagine I'm a music producer (or whatever they're called) and a band comes to me and says they improvise the vocals without lyrics, I'd tell them to come back when they're sober and have lyrics (that probably explains why I don't work in the music industry 😛).

It was improvised during the recording of Dark side of the moon in 1973, improvised by Claire Torry.... but during pulse concert, the three back vocalists didn't improvise, mostly following the claire torry's theme.

LOL always great watching people see that for the first time. You have to do "Comfortably Numb" from the same live concert.(1994 Pulse) The melody and beautiful harmonies will blow you away, not to mention God's guitarist David Glimour at the peak of his career singing and blazing on guitar. They say it's the best guitar solo of all time...I happen to agree.
Subscribed to see you react to it (soon I hope :)

The original vocal recording in the studio was fully improvised. They didn't give her much instruction. Just react to the already recorded instruments and improvise something to go with it. The live performances since then are not improvised. They try their best to come close to the original recording. Though some minor changes do creep in.

Sam Brown... too bad she was only a one hit wonder. Love her voice. 'Stop' is still one of my favourite songs of the late 80's (or was it early 90's?).

Ad lib. She never heard the music before. They told her to imagine death and dark thoughts. Took her 2 takes. She made up the song, feelings on the spot. Every time ever performed after that they try to make it sound like the original. Claire ŵas recording the same building and they invited her to give it a go

The original was done in one take, despite the nay sayers.
After Clare sued the band for royalties, as she DID write the vocals by creating them in one take and without anything to go by or help her, then she performed the song live for the band.......but she was a lot older and her voice was no longer supple enough......it was a disaster.
The band did try 2 singers live but found it needed 3 vocalists live.......just too difficult for one or 2 to complete live.
Is basically the 5 stages of DEATH.... to complete Time and side one of the album.
    Denial
    Fear
    Anger
    I cant remember
    Acceptance / peace

Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at the studio prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The doorman stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Richard Wright only wrote the music for a different project prior to the songs concept ever being thought of which was the results of Gilmour being asked if P.F. would ever do a song about religion
    Results are legendary.
