The reality of love turning grey ”like the skin of a dying man” is driving Pink crazy, throwing him into an uncontrollable tantrum. As he progresses down the path of self-isolation, the struggle with his own nature becomes more and more violent.
Here’s the link to the original song by Pink Floyd:

I didn’t even want to go. I thought it was old men yelling at teachers. Only went because I was gonna be allowed to smoke weed. Fun fact: That phone call with the operator is an actual real operator. Roger placed a collect call and recorded the operator's reaction. It's a legitimate reaction.
“We were in L.A. at Producer’s Workshop so I phoned my neighbour, Chris Fitzmorris in London. He had the keys to my flat and I asked him to go there and said that I would call him through an operator. “No matter how many times I call”, I said, “just pick up the phone, say ‘Hello’, let the operator speak and then hang up”. I placed a telephone in a soundproof area, got on to an extension phone and started recording to 1/4″ tape. It took a couple of operators - the first 2 were a bit abrupt, but the 3rd was perfect. I told her that I wanted to make a collect call to Mrs. Floyd. “Who’s calling?” she asked. “Mr. Floyd”, I replied. Chris’ timing was terrific, over and over he would hang up just at the right moment and she became genuinely concerned. “Is there supposed to be someone there besides your wife?” I was playing her along saying things like “No! I don’t know who that is!” and “What’s going on?” and she would try the call again. Unwittingly, she was helping to tell the story. Afterwards I went through the 1/4″ and edited my voice out, just leaving her and Chris. I sometimes wonder if she ever heard herself on the record.”
Roger Waters also loved this bit:
“I think it’s great. I love that operator. I think she’s wonderful. She didn’t know what was happening at all. The way she picks up on - I mean it’s been edited a bit, but the way she picks up all that stuff about “is there supposed to be anybody else there besides your wife” you know? I think is amazing. She really clicked into it straight away. She’s terrific.”

“Run to the bedroom, in the suitcase on the left, you’ll find my favourite axe…” is a brilliant Waters lyric because of the ambiguous meaning - 🎸? 🪓 ? The young woman flies into a blind panic because she has no idea if this madman is going to play her a tune on his favourite guitar or attack her with a weapon - the lyric ramps up the unstable atmosphere to intense heights. It signifies the pivotal moment when Pink finally loses it and the complete chaos and madness to come becomes inevitable. David Gilmour delivers the perfect solo for this insane atmosphere - disjointed yet melodic, emotive, haunting AND groovy, all at the same time.

A female groupie manages to make it past his security (Pink is a rock star, this is before his big show, he's still in his hotel room). Pink starts to have his breakdown after discovering his wife's infidelity, and starts to smash up the hotel room, including the old 70s rock star trope of smashing the tv and throwing it out the window. The groupie obviously is scared of this madman so runs away, continuing the theme of him being abandoned.

Amy, I was both looking forward to and dreading your initial hearing of this song. You have a caring disposition that comes out in your analysis. I almost feel bad that you had to be exposed to Pink's "break" as you rightly call it. I can only imagine how it will be for you as you follow further into Pink's fall into madness. Your clearly confused and disturbed reaction tells it all. You sum it up well with "this is tragic". Tragic, indeed. Thank you for persevering on this project.

The major events in Pink's experience in his hotel room are few but they're well described in not only his voice, but also in the sound design. First we discover that he's not alone, he has a young groupie with him. A little later, he breaks a window and asks, "would you like to see me try?" (To jump from the window and fly.) Pink has had a psychotic break and the groupie runs away, the smartest decision that she could make, a decision that Pink is not capable of understanding as her escape doesn't fit into the rules of the world he now inhabits.

Possibly my favorite individual track from this album. On its face, he finds out his wife is with another man, and he goes nuts/has a breakdown. Of course, since this is a brilliantly insightful album, we already know that his relationship is broken, that he was looking for a "dirty woman" and that he has these temperamental explosions on a consistent basis, because it's *one* of his turns, *one* of his "bad days," so not his first, or his last.
It reminds me of a novel with an unreliable narrator written by a master to include all the hints we need to figure out what they're not focusing on telling us explicitly (of course, his contribution to the hell he's living in becomes more explicit in Don't Leave Me Now).
It's very enjoyable, revisiting this album through a newcomer's eyes.

And I can feel one of my turns coming on

But here, you're already struck with the emotion. 'Feeling' the song first, and then some of the details of the score come to mind after. You're invested in the story and how the lyrics, music, and sound effects feel long before the analysis dawns on you. The studio version presents a pretty clear narrative of events. The film version is comparatively surreal:
"The song begins with a close-up of the debris in Pink's hotel room, then switches over to the hotel's pool, where Pink is seen floating in a crucifix position. Having cut open his right hand during his violent outburst, his blood stains the pool water. What follows is a fantasy sequence in which Pink watches The Dam Busters on TV in a much larger, and entirely empty, hotel room. The shadow of Pink's wife emerges on the back wall before materialising into a praying mantis-like monster, which then transforms into the vulva-shaped flower from "What Shall We Do Now?". The song ends with Pink cowering in the corner of the room, tortured by both the imaginary mantis in front of him, and thoughts of his wife's adultery."

This song makes a lot more sense when you experienced (or dealt with someone in) a period of clycling through depression and mania.
Some lyrical details using words like "razor balde, tourniquet, funeral drum" and the part where he asks if the girl would like to see he trying to "fly", seems to subtly imply the ideia of self-harm or worse.
And the "would you like to call the cops" line kind of shows that he's somewhat aware that his atitude is frightening and dangerous, but he just can't hold it anymore and does not care about consequences.
Then the song ends as he's coming out of the manic phase and going back to depression.

Interestingly, this is a turning point in the album. It's fascinating to see someone break down this classic rock opera brick by brick, especially someone who has such a musical background but has never heard this before. I wait eagerly for every new Wall reaction and analysis from you. Thank you for digging so deep into this. I hope you are enjoying.

I’d say it’s THE turning point in the arc of Pink’s story - the moment where, after everything that has been bubbling under, he finally snaps and begins his descent into madness.

I really love to see you doing this analysis, complete blanco. It reminds me on the time I listened to this album when I was a about 15 years old, not knowing what it all was about. I had a casette copy of it so I didn't have the lyrics and English is not my first language and I was just a kid. So what could I know??
The penny dropped years later at the age of 19 when I first saw the movie, subtitled on a huge screen. A slice of space cake made in come in to the merge of my bones and never before and never after this I had an artistic experience that hit me so deep as The Wall.

Axe is also slang for Guitar especially among rock musicians. Pretty sure that is what is meant literally by the speaker, a guitar, but it used in the song like proverbial axe as he uses it to smash things.

I had to laugh at the “kinda went crazy there” comment. Right after (in my humble opinion) one of the most powerful pieces of music that i have ever come across. It goes to show how subjective music is which makes music even more beautiful than imaginable! Another reason this song is so powerful is the segway from him being dejected by that phone and you can really sense/feel his rage beyond the point of reasoning. He could care less about anything in his moment, that and the tempo changes, vocals, amazing, divine rock jam there, still to this day (I’m 58 years young) moves me in ways that is completely rare in finding those feelings anywhere else! I kind of feel bad because i could tell that she tried to give it another chance (possibly influenced to do so) but the absolute most beautiful thing about music is the love that we feel for it is very diverse and so Loving a piece or not doesn’t mean a single thing. What matters is that YOU love it because that frequency, vibration, energy that you receive, and your acceptance of it is your life!! (Literally your life) And you always want to take care of that for the sake of the powerful alchemist that you are! Love is the answer to everything! Pretty easy, or else this song is a great example of what fear energy brings us more of when we allow it. As always, thank you so much for your advance analogy Amy! You are loved so much more than you know!❤

In the film our protagonist character, Pink, loses it, throws a television out of the hotel window, screaming down to the streets below as his hand gets cut on the broken glass, "...would you like to learn to fly, would like to see me try?" Pink has now become the antagonist as he has a complete mental breakdown and loses himself in the isolation and drug madness he has surrounded himself and mired himself in, a rock star who becomes a malignant narcissist as the story takes a very dark turn.

There is an accompanied movie called The Wall with Bob Geldof as Pink. Some of the songs on The Wall are better understood if you watch the movie, this is definitely one of them and a major scene in the film, The soundtrack that runs with the movie also sometimes plays differently, sometimes subtly sometimes more overt., than the The Wall double album. Anyway worth checking out the film for broader context of Waters lyrics.

I am late tonthis series and reactions overall without question. So not sure I truly have much to add to what many others have mentioned. I have noticed in the comments that you will culminate the series by viewing the film which I think is awesome! I absolutely love when you point out the technical aspects of this work. You can be sure every single thing is intentional without doubt. Pink Floyd was a very long time developing and settling on their very distinct sound. Early on they would do live gigs accompanying orchestras publicly, it was what got them some notoriety early on so thats what they did for a large part of the 60's. Thus; they are very aware of classical and experimental use of sound and progressions and how they affect a listener. The basis for the story is centered around a lost member of the very original line up to mental illness Sid Barrett, (I believe they credited Sid for most of the lyrical hooks and construction there of Waters and Gilmore developed over the years) however; this is not Sids story overall. Gilmore and Waters both have said many times Sid was a major influence but the story really is a combination of at least four of the band members. So to recognize the complex relationships of the song's is exactly what Gilmore would have hoped a listener notice. My personal thoughts are that Waters would not be as set on the technical side but would have liked the idea at this moment you would be confused and feeling unsettled about the direction of the story itself. That opinion comes from some conflicting interviews of the two members over the years. Then we got lucky and Gilmore candidly speaks about Sid and we learn "wish you were here" is more about Sid than the entire work you are now enjoying. I can't help but think that the events Gilmore described did play a major role in the arrangement and lyrical content I have not been able to shake the feelings the band members must of had during an unannounced visit to the studio by Sid it is best told by both Waters and Gilmore so I won't go into the story itself. I would like to say I love your channel and how you approach all the music you review! I absolutely respect and listen to your opinions and explanations of music! Your students surely must feel very fortunate to have such a gifted and knowledgeable teacher. Thank you for so much work and such amazing insight into areas of songs I normally would not notice.
